Elon Musk says SpaceX and X headquarters moving to Texas, blames California trans student privacy law

SpaceX CEO and X owner Elon Musk said Tuesday he will move the headquarters of both companies from California to Texas.

Musk had vowed to make the moves in response to Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) signing a new law that bars school districts in that state from requiring parents to be notified of a child’s gender identification change. Newson signed the student transgender law on Monday.

“This is the final straw. Because of this law and the many others that preceded it, attacking both families and companies, SpaceX will now move its HQ from Hawthorne, California to Starbase, Texas,” Musk posted on X. He later added that X HQ will also move from San Francisco to Austin.

Politico writes,

This is not the first time he’s threatened to leave California over political differences. During the pandemic, Musk also sued California and threatened to move Tesla HQ to Texas due to the state’s Covid-19 restrictions, which were among the most cautious in the nation. In early 2023, Musk brought part of Tesla’s operations back to California, opening up engineering headquarters back in Silicon Valley.

And while Musk on Tuesday blamed the new transgender protections for the impending move, prior media reports had indicated he was contemplating relocation for X before Newsom signed the law.

Musk has grown increasingly vocal and conservative in his political views in recent years, often putting him at odds with the Democratic leadership in California. Earlier this week, he announced he would funnel $45 million a month into a political action committee to support former President Donald Trump.

I don’t know about you but I find Musk’s attitude like that of a ten year old spoiled brat.

Mr Musk, who has a transgender daughter, has previously said he "supports trans" while expressing impatience with pronouns - calling them an "aesthetic nightmare".

The billionaire's daughter Vivian Jenna Wilson filed to cut ties with him in 2022.

She said she no longer wanted to "be related to my biological father in any way, shape or form" when applying to legally change her name and gender.

Last year, Mr Musk said he would lobby to criminalise transgender medical treatment.

"Because of this law and the many others that preceded it, attacking both families and companies, SpaceX will now move its HQ from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas," he said in a post on X on Tuesday, noting that he had previously expressed his opposition to the bill.
