On this day in 1936 my parents got married by a justice of the peace (No it wasn't because of what you are thinking) and honeymooned in Provincetown.

The problem was my father was Catholic and my mother was Episcopalian. So my mother became a Catholic and were married in a Catholic church in January.

I always wondered, why my parents got and anniversary card from my grandmother in January, hence the anniversary card

It almost didn't happen at all for 15-year-old Aangad Singh, a rising junior honors student at Foran High School in Milford. 

Aangad made it to the regional semifinals of the Presidential 1776 Award for civics in Boston, then became one of 20 top finishers from across the United States invited to the nation's capital, then won a spot in the Elite Eight on stage June 9. 

Then, the dispute: Did Aangad answer enough questions correctly to land in the top three finishers, with a trip to the Oval Office to meet President Donald Trump and tens of thousands of dollars, as much as $150,000 in prize money? He and his family say yes. Many people on hand at the Kennedy Center the night of the show say yes. 

But something happened. The question is... what? Everyone watching thought he was one of the three winners.

But when the emcee – actor and TV personality Mario Lopez – read the names of the finalists, Aangad was not among them. Shocked, disoriented and perplexed, he took a seat in the audience with his family to watch the finals.  

As you can imagine, he was devastated. Other contestants came up and said they thought that he won and were perplexed. The website American Bazaar wrote:

What was designed as a program to showcase youth civics knowledge for the nation’s 250th anniversary has left several families questioning the transparency of federal organizers.

The Presidential 1776 Award competition, organized as part of America’s semi quincentennial celebrations, brought top high school scholars to the Kennedy Center in Washington.

During the taped broadcast, 15-year-old Connecticut contestant Aangad Singh answered a question regarding federal court jurisdiction under Article III of the U.S. Constitution and the on-screen graphics marked two of his points in red as incorrect, despite the phrases matching the Constitutional text.

The Indian Express said of the answers:

The family also disputed the marking of a lightning-round question asking which constitutional amendment abolished slavery. They said Aangad answered “the 13th Amendment”, but the response was marked incorrect, possibly because of pronunciation. They also pointed to auto-generated subtitles from the broadcast, which they said reflected the correct answer.

However, when questioned, the contest officials said the final scores were “proprietary.”

The Presidential 1776 Award competition was set up by the Trump administration to honor America’s 250th birthday with a civics contest for high school students.

But the family of 15-year-old Aangad Singh believes he may have been kept out of the competition’s final because of his Sikh background and visible turban, NOTUS reports.

Singh, a rising high school junior who lives in Connecticut, entered the competition in February just like other high school students around the country. He scored well enough to reach the finals in Washington, D.C., at the end of June and make the final eight. But his elimination after that left his family—and many of his competitors—puzzled.

Could it be xenophobia and/or Islamophobia? Was it his turban? He is a Sikh, and people often confuse them with Muslims, even though Sikhism is the world's fifth-largest organized religion and is not related to Islam.

The Wyoming winner was a homeschooled girl who would later be touted by the Department of Education for culture-war propaganda, and the Washington state winner told Trump at the White House that she wanted to attend Hillsdale College, a politically conservative school, to which Trump said he could give a recommendation.

And is it as simple as that... Trump couldn't be seen with a person wearing a turban.

Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy released a video last week where he alleged that Singh, who is the son of Indian immigrants, was sidelined to uplift contestants who better aligned with Trump’s agenda. All three of the finalists were White, and one identified as a Trump supporter in an interview with CNN.

“How do you justify running a merit-based competition based upon how much you know about American history, and then denying a kid a place in the winner’s circle, perhaps simply because his parents are immigrants,” Murphy asked.

In a statement to CNN, the Education Department said that all contestants had agreed that judges — fellows from the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation — “would judge the competition in good faith with full discretion over scoring.”

“They also understood that in the live competition, the judges would have to exercise their best judgment and deliberate in real time. It was a fierce and close competition, and Mr. Singh was an outstanding competitor,” the agency said.

But the question remains why haven't they released the scoring?

Citing dangers to LGBTQ+ and immigrant communities, the Oregon-Idaho Conference of the United Methodist Church voted last month to move next year’s annual conference out of Idaho.

At this year’s annual conference — a meeting where representatives from Oregon and southern Idaho United Methodist churches gather to vote on and make decisions — held at the Cathedral of the Rockies in Boise, the Rev. Heather Riggs of Montavilla United Methodist in Portland brought a motion to the floor to change the location of next year’s conference.

Dozens of clergy and laity gave public comment, arguing why they believed the event should remain in Idaho or move to Oregon in 2027. The vote was close, but the end result was that the conference would either move to Oregon or be held virtually.

This is the result of Idaho's bigoty, I hope other organizations shy away from states that are non-affirming.

A Mediterranean cruise chartered for thousands of LGBTQ+ travelers, most of them gay men, has been blocked from docking at a second country along its itinerary because of who the travelers are.

As The Advocate reported on Friday, Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady, chartered by Atlantis Events for a 10-day sailing from Athens, Greece, to Italy, was denied scheduled port calls in Kuşadası and Istanbul by Turkish authorities last week, citing "moral standards," forcing organizers to change the route shortly before the ship arrived. Atlantis said on its website that Turkish authorities informed the company the ship would not be permitted to dock in either city.

Now come on folks, what were they thinking?

CNN wrote;

“My mind went to the LGBTQ communities in Egypt and Turkey where LGBTQ individuals don’t have the opportunities to just sail away,” passenger Morley told CNN. “Discrimination and the lack of opportunities that come with the shortsighted marginalization of LGBTQ people and other minorities damages far beyond a cruise ship rescheduling.”

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan’s AK Party has adopted increasingly harsh rhetoric against the LGBTQ community over the past decade, sparking condemnation from rights groups. Authorities have banned Pride marches in Istanbul since 2015, citing public safety and security concerns.

What were they thinking? It is like waving a red flag in front of a bull!

During the Monday morning plenary, commissioners to the 227th General Assembly approved several pieces of business from the Racial Justice Committee regarding racism. The Assembly also approved a measure regarding gender-affirming healthcare sent by the Gender and Sexuality Justice Committee. 

Commissioners approved with amendments several recommendations of the Special Committee on the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and Race concerning racism and white supremacy.

The recommendation also included a direction to Presbyterian Life & Witness to assemble resources on anti-racism, diversity, equity, inclusion, white Christian nationalism and racial justice and make them accessible to the whole church.

But then it went on to recommend…

A motion from the Gender and Sexuality Justice Committee declaring that the PC(USA) supports access to medically necessary, evidence-based gender-affirming healthcare was approved 441-30.  

GEN-02, On Access to Health Care, directs the Advisory Committee on Social Witness Policy to update its healthcare policy so that it reflects this topic of business.  

Zayn Silva, a corresponding member with the Advocacy Committee for LGBTQIA+ Equity, said the church has struggled to offer compassion for gender-affirming healthcare.  

“During the HIV/AIDS crisis, we called treatment moral confusion, and people died without our love,” Silva said.  

Silva said compassion for those seeking gender-affirming care is an example of LEAF, an acronym shared in the morning worship by Moderators the Rev. CeCe Armstrong and the Rev. Tony Larson. LEAF, the Moderators offered, stands for "Love Everyone and Flourish." 

“Let us not let people die without love now, because this is a life-and-death matter,” Silva said.

Not all religions are the same, some have our backs.

Where Maryland Avenue and Kenwood Boulevard meet in Milwaukee stands the Corner House. It's a Lutheran campus ministry at UW-Milwaukee.

"We are actually the only Christian campus ministry that's LGBT+ affirming operational in the city of Milwaukee," The Rev. Elias Henry said. "We are the only one for 70,000-plus college students."

"We are often a place where people come, and they say, I didn't know a place like this existed. I didn't know a church, a Christian organization, could be welcoming of LGBT+ people, let alone have a pastor who is part of the community," Henry said.

Henry, who is transgender, holds a place in the pulpit that remains rare in American ministry.

"I am one of about half a dozen trans men who are Presbyterian pastors in the country," Henry said.

So please don't paint religion with a broad brush, there are those that support us!

Three things you can be sure of in sports each June.

First, somebody will have a Pride Night.

Second, someone will have a public snit about it.

And third, that someone will use the Bible to justify their nonsense.

The latest to follow that predictable route was the group of San Francisco Giants pitchers who decided to wear their now-infamous defaced rainbow logo Pride caps with a scrawled Bible verse, some form of Genesis 9:11-16. The aftermath of the flood, the promise to Noah to never again flood the earth and the symbol of the promise, the rainbow.

They say they are Christians, but they cherry-pick the parts they want and ignore the rest.

One of the players, Landen Roupp, when asked about that symbolism of the rainbow to lesbian, gay, bi and trans people — and the players’ booming statement against it — said, “First of all, as a believer, I would push them to read the Bible,”

Let’s talk believer to believer. Yes, in addition to being a Black trans woman and a sportswriter , I’m a church-going, praying-without-ceasing, footwashing Christian.

This past Sunday my pastor, faithful like me and trans like me, put forth a point to ponder in his sermon.

“We’ve been an independent nation for 250 years,” he said. “But many people would not call our nation free.”

Given the actions of certain sectors of our body politic and decisions made at home and abroad, the nation’s birthday would be ripe for dissension.

As I have said before, I am not religious, but I believe in God... just not organized religion.

I was raised Catholic and went to Catechism, and the one thing I remember from that time is this:

"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets."

So I think those who hide behind the Bible to justify their animosity toward us have flunked the test.

To some extent, Mohamed Hussein knew he was preparing to enter the lion’s den.

But he made the decision to attend the Republican Party of Texas Convention to confirm for himself that he had a place in the GOP, even as members of the party have railed for months about the urgency of ending Sharia Law and the so-called “Islamification” of Texas.

What he found was a party that didn’t want him. He arrived with hope but left in tears after being told explicitly that he should leave the country.

Hussein was among four Muslims who arrived at the convention in earnest — not as protesters, but as delegates or attendees — to participate in the annual meeting of the state’s most hardlined Republicans as they vote on the party’s priorities and hear from GOP leaders. Two prevailing themes from the Houston gathering were party unity and combatting Sharia Law, a movement that veered into outright Islamophobia by members of the convention.

The Republican party has turned into the party of the White Christian Nationalists 

They Call Themselves Holy Men!

I was watching a a news show, and they had segment about Christian nationalism and events connected to America's upcoming 250th anniversary, it is called "Rededicate 250". What struck me were ministers standing on the pulpit and claiming that the founders intended the United States to be a Christian nation. That claim is not supported by the historical record. I just don’t understand how a pious person can knowingly tell such a lie.

Then they had a segment about Trump reading from a Bible. What a crock. He’s a grifter and a confidence man—he’ll promise you the moon and tell you whatever you want to hear. He has been convicted on 34 felony counts in a criminal case, and in a civil case, a jury found him liable for sexually abusing and battering E. Jean Carroll. Yet people still believe him when he says that we are a Christian Nation.

 Here are some of the statements our founding father said about religion.

George Washington to the Hebrew Congregation (Newport, Rhode Island – 1790)

"For happily the Government of the United States, which gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance, requires only that they who live under its protection should demean themselves as good citizens…"

The Treaty of Tripoli (1797)

"As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen [Muslims]... it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries."

Thomas Jefferson to the Danbury Baptists (Connecticut – 1802)

"I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between Church & State."

The Founders left a substantial written record of their views on religion and government.

Thomas Jefferson	Coined the phrase "wall of separation between church and state." Literally cut up the New Testament to remove all miracles, creating the "Jefferson Bible."
James Madison	The "Father of the Constitution" argued that blending government and religion corrupts both. He even opposed hiring chaplains for Congress and the military with public tax dollars.
John Adams	Signed the Treaty of Tripoli, which stated: "The government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion." He also noted that the U.S. was founded on reason and human rights, not dogma.
Benjamin Franklin	Wrote that when a religion requires the help of the "civil power" to support itself, it is a sign of it being a bad one. Explicitly stated in his autobiography that public preaching spaces should be open to all faiths, including Islam.

But these holy men have they have no qualms to lying from the pulpit or their political agenda.

Southern Baptists vote to advance a formal ban on churches with women pastors

Thousands of Southern Baptists overwhelmingly voted Wednesday to advance a formal ban on women pastors in the nation’s largest Protestant denomination, sending a clear message that men alone should preach to these conservative evangelical congregations.

The amendment would tighten existing restrictions in the Southern Baptist Convention, which already has a faith statement opposing women pastors.

The vote was 6,028 to 2,026 — a 3-to-1 margin — which easily exceeded the required two-thirds majority. It will require a similar two-thirds vote at next year’s meeting to become part of the constitution.

The two-day meeting concluded Wednesday after bringing more than 11,000 delegates, or messengers, to a cavernous convention center in Orlando, Florida.

It fits right in with Christian Nationalist and the Republican push to send us back to the 1950s.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has launched a sweeping review of the military legal system, directing the Pentagon to evaluate legal programs across the services, compare them with one another and benchmark them against the Justice Department and criminal justice systems. 

In a May 8 memo to service secretaries, the Joint Chiefs staff and legal offices across the Defense Department, Hegseth instructed the Pentagon’s general counsel to convene a special review panel that will conduct what he described as an “ongoing, long-term, departmentwide review of all aspects of the military legal system as it affects our warriors.” 

The panel is expected to issue interim reports and recommendations over time rather than produce a single final study. Hegseth said the effort is intended to “cut unnecessary bureaucracy, strengthen training and organization and make military legal professionals more effective.”

And what will the religious make-up of this panel be, and who choses them?

The question is not whether to review the system — the military legal system faces a number of challenges, including yearslong backlogs, inconsistent policies across the services and chronic staffing shortages — but how that review is structured.

“There’s a lot of areas in the military legal system that need reform,” Ira Rushing, an associate at the Tully Rinckey law firm, told Federal News Network.  “I would have some reservations about having the panel structured and convened by DoD general counsel, which is a bureaucratic position, so a bureaucrat making suggestions on how to reduce bureaucracy. I think throughout the history of time that has never been a very good idea. But again the difference between this being an executive branch panel versus a legislative branch panel is its ability to actually effectuate any change to begin with.”

I don't really trust Hegseth, I am scared he will change the balance of their legal system to favor the military!

Some of the things to watch over the next six months to better understand where this panel is heading include its membership list, once it is released — the credibility of the effort will depend heavily on whether the panel includes independent voices such as retired military judges, defense practitioners and academic experts or it is dominated by political appointees and Pentagon insiders.

“The more diverse the better. If it’s a roster of political appointees or inside the building council  — maybe that’d be a different signal,” Rushing said.

I Am Not Anti-Christian

Before I came out, I never knew any rabbis, ministers, or priests. Now I know about a dozen from all denominations, and they all share one common trait: they are all affirming! So, I am a little confused.

Trump task force releases controversial 'anti-Christian bias' report

President Donald Trump’s task force to investigate "anti-Christian bias" in the federal government published a report on April 30 that criticized former President Joe Biden's administration for what it characterized as actions and policies that negatively impacted Christians around the country.

Several advocacy groups challenged the report's findings, describing them as deceptive and contradictory.

Trump established the task force in a February 2025 executive order that said his administration would “ensure that any unlawful and improper conduct, policies or practices that target Christians are identified, terminated and rectified.”

The report also took time to attack us...

"Those sentiments were reiterated in the task force’s nearly 200-page report, which criticized Biden's "Transgender Day of Visibility" proclamation (a longstanding observance which fell on Easter Sunday in 2024); charges against Christian anti-abortion activists; and alleged discrimination against Christian foster care families.

“By addressing anti-Christian bias and religious discrimination directly, Americans can make religious discrimination unthinkable for all faiths,” the report said.

Okay... everyone else does not think of abortion as a Christian issue, but rather about the right to self-determination! Our rights are not religious! Our rights are human rights!

The Baptist News wrote,

The Biden administration enacted policies intended to weaponize the federal government against conservative Christians, according to a report released April 30 by the U.S. Justice Department.

The controversial 208-page report was created by President Donald Trump’s Task Force to Eradicate Anti-Christian Bias, established by executive order in February 2025. Church-state watchdog groups have criticized the task force’s composition and mission from the start, saying it is all about airing evangelicals’ imagined grievances.

The new report claims the Biden White House was adamantly opposed to a “Christian worldview” and determined to shut down “traditional religious practices” wherever it could.

Joe Biden, a devout Catholic, was perhaps the most religiously observant president in recent history. However, evangelicals believe his policies contradicted what they call a “Christian worldview.”}

Did you get that? "Joe Biden, a devout Catholic, was perhaps the most religiously observant president in recent history." But still, the hand-picked religious committee found the exact opposite! The task force claimed that:

The task force has interpreted the enforcement of federal law during the Biden presidency as ideologically motivated attacks against conservative Christians. Examples include prosecutions of anti-abortion protesters under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, fines levied against Christian universities for false reporting violations, mandating COVID vaccines for federal and some private employers, and prohibiting organized religious activities at government facilities.

You know, I do not know a single person who is against any religion; what we object to is those religions forcing their beliefs on us! We see the banning of abortions as a religious attack on those whose religious beliefs allow abortions; we see them forcing their religious beliefs on us... against other people's religious beliefs!

The Pink News reported,

Over the years Trump has cosied up to many evangelical Christian leaders, including prominent, wealthy right-wing evangelicals like American Values president Gary Bauer, and Family Research Council president Tony Perkins.

Family Research Council has been designated an anti-LGBTQ+ hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, and Tony Perkins, a former police officer, has repeatedly claimed that LGBTQ+ people are more likely to be paedophiles.

Those are the groups that are on Trump's side. When we passed the Connecticut gender non-discrimination law, we had support from religious leaders in Connecticut, including an Episcopal Bishop.

It is not religion that we are against, but rather them forcing their religious views on us

 Today, the Religious Liberty Commission (RLC) held its final hearing to discuss the past, present, and future of religious liberty in America. 

“Today’s capstone hearing of President Trump’s Religious Liberty Commission contained more powerful testimony and discussion about how people of religion are under assault by the secular left," said Chairman Dan Patrick. "It is time to set the record straight: there is no such thing as ‘separation of church and state’ in the Constitution. For too long, the anti-God left has used this phrase to suppress people of religion in our country. During all 7 Commission hearings, witness after witness testified that the so-called ‘separation of church and state’ was used to take their God-given religious liberty rights away. Next month, the Commission will deliver our recommendations to President Trump to ensure that Americans’ religious liberty is safeguarded against evil forces seeking to suppress them in our country.” 

You know that this is really scary coming from an administration that has been characterized as pushing for a Christian Nation! Look at the wording in that press release! "people of religion are under assault by the secular left"the anti-God left" tell me that isn't biased?

 The leader of President Donald Trump’s Religious Liberty Commission said that church and state separation is a falsehood at the group’s final meeting, drawing criticism from an advocacy group that supports it.

At a Monday (April 13) hearing at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C., Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, a Republican and the chair of the commission, asked, “Would it not be a good recommendation that every school, every university, every business, has to have that one sheet on the bulletin board about protecting people’s religious liberty, and that the separation of church and state is the biggest lie that’s been told in America since our founding?”

 “Church-state separation ensures we are all free to live as ourselves and believe as we choose, as long as we don’t harm others,” Laser said in a statement issued Monday. “It allows us all to come together as equals to build a stronger democracy. It is an American original, something we should be proud of, fight for, and cherish.”

They want to hang the Ten Commandments in the classrooms!

 In February, Americans United joined Democracy Forward in filing a lawsuit against the commission, challenging its composition that included one non-Christian and stating that its “Christian members do not represent the full diversity of the Christian faith.” The suit was filed on behalf of interfaith, Muslim, Sikh and Hindu organizations. Americans United and Democracy Forward have since sought a preliminary injunction to prevent the publication of a commission report while their case is considered by a federal district court.

The lawsuit, Interfaith Alliance, et al. v. Trump, et al., was filed by Democracy Forward and Americans United for Separation of Church and State on behalf of Interfaith Alliance, Muslims for Progressive Values, Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund, and Hindus for Human Rights.

The coalition claims Trump’s commission violates the Federal Advisory Committee Act and offers unbalanced and biased viewpoints. The coalition wants the court to order the Commission to comply with FACA’s transparency requirements by publishing documents regarding the committee’s proceedings.

 This is the second such case brought against the Religious Liberty Commission by the same coalition.

Rev. Paul Brandeis Raushenbush v. Donald Trump was filed in federal district court in New York in February, seeking a declaration the board was unlawfully founded and constituted and to require any documents and recommendations it produces to be made public.

On top of selecting a skewed and biased membership, the Commission has refused to release agendas, meeting minutes, transcripts and other Commission materials.”

 Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, the commission's chairman, at one point called it the “biggest lie that’s been told in America since our founding.” 

Patrick's statement echoed comments made in previous Religious Liberty Commission hearings and by the Trump administration more broadly that suggest the government can and should promote religion as a public good without violating the First Amendment, which says “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.”

You know how the Republican's courts are always harping on "Originalists" in the Constitution well how original is this...

Intelligence Chair Rick Crawford (R-Ark.) said in a brief interview Wednesday evening that there was still a lot of conversation around warrants and potential reforms. When asked about the Higgins amendment [Requires that they obtain a warrant for “U.S. person queries”] in particular, Crawford said leadership has to consider the number of people they will gain on a final vote versus lose with any changes.

A Catholic nursing home in Westchester County is suing New York state, arguing that rules meant to protect transgender people in its care violate the religious freedom of the nurses who run it.

The Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne, who operate Rosary Hill Home, filed the lawsuit against Gov. Kathy Hochul and the state health department this month. They're challenging a mandate that long-term care facilities in New York give patients access to facilities — like bathrooms and hospital beds — that align with their gender identities rather than their sexes assigned at birth.

Staff at these long-term care facilities are also required to undergo cultural competency training under legislation Hochul signed into law three years ago. The lawsuit refers to that training as indoctrination, and further objects to rules that staff members use patients preferred pronouns, or "accommodate patients’ desire for extramarital relations.”

“The Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne and Rosary Hill Home operate in accordance with the ethical and religious directives and the teachings of the Catholic Church,” states the suit by the nursing facility, which provides pro bono care to patients with cancer. “They cannot comply with the mandate without violating these sincerely held religious beliefs.”

Yeah, yeah, I get the “religious freedom” stuff but when I was growing up I went to the Catholic Confraternity of Christian Doctrine classes, I don’t remember much but what I do remember is this… that one of the two greatest commandments is “Love your neighbor as yourself”

So I just can’t get my head around that these nuns seem to have forgotten that.

I wonder if those nuns thought that this might be a test?

The image, posted to Truth Social late Sunday night, depicts Trump as Christ, laying his hand on a patient in a hospital bed, seemingly healing him.

He is surrounded by other figures, including a nurse, a soldier, and a praying woman. Also present in the image is the U.S. flag, several bald eagles, the Statue of Liberty, and the Lincoln Memorial.

The 79-year-old posted the image less than an hour after his attack on the pope, who he condemned as “weak on crime, and terrible for foreign policy.”

The White House posted and then rushed to delete an hour-long recording of an event with President Donald Trump that captured him lashing out at the Supreme Court after justices signaled expressed skepticism about his birthright citizenship case.

The president privately hosted a group of MAGA pastors and religious allies Wednesday for an Easter luncheon at the White House. Trump made several bonkers remarks during the event, which was never meant to be seen by the public, as the White House quickly deleted the footage from its official pages.

“I can’t get a ballroom approved. It’s pretty amazing, right? If I was a king, we’d be doing a lot more. I’m doing a lot, but I could be doing a lot more if I was a king,” he lamented.

At a White House luncheon April 1, Trump spoke about Palm Sunday and said he could relate to the story of Jesus.

Facing the Germans in World War II, Gen. George Patton ordered a chaplain to write an interfaith prayer for troops to say on the battlefield.

It took just a week in September 2001 for Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld to change the name of the campaign against terrorism from Operation Infinite Justice to Operation Enduring Freedom — a switch meant to clarify that the U.S. was not in a religious war.

But those longtime norms are being upended by the proselytizing Christian campaign of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, say multiple former high-ranking military officials and experts on religion and law. Rather than boosting cohesion through a more universal spiritual uplift, they say, the new approach violates the Constitution and undermines the bonds of mutual respect between troops that are essential, especially in wartime.

“The American military has had a remarkable ride of equanimity and fairness and justice and all manner of good adjectives with regard to religion. It’s done this in a way that’s really remarkable — until now,” said retired Army Col. Larry Wilkerson, who served as chief of staff to Colin Powell when he was secretary of state and then was chair of the Joint Chiefs. Hegseth’s actions, Wilkerson said, “are totally violative of everything that transpired before it. This has come on us in a very quick fashion.”

Retired Army Maj. Gen. Randy Manner, who was second-in-command at the National Guard from 2011 to 2012, has worked in recent years to train hundreds of interfaith military chaplains. Manner said he has talked with “dozens and dozens” of active-duty chaplains in recent weeks who say those who don’t identify with Hegseth “are being marginalized.” They feel they can’t voice their concerns to their own superiors, he said, and feel their work as the primary advocate for troops’ spiritual, mental and moral health is being threatened.

“I’ve had people tell me they’re not included in staff meetings,” Manner said.

He sees the war as a "Just" war to bring the true faith to the infidels!

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, hosting his first monthly Christian worship service at the Pentagon since the Iran war began, prayed Wednesday to have “every round find its mark.”

“Every month it is fitting to be right here,” he told the gathered civilian employees and uniformed military personnel. “All the more fitting this month, at this moment, given what tens of thousands of Americans are doing right now.”

He read a prayer he said was first given by a military chaplain to the troops who captured then-President Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela.

“Let every round find its mark against the enemies of righteousness and our great nation,” Hegseth prayed during the livestreamed service. “Give them wisdom in every decision, endurance for the trial ahead, unbreakable unity, and overwhelming violence of action against those who deserve no mercy.”

He is on the road to war crimes!

During the expanding Iran war and global conflicts, Hegseth’s Christian rhetoric has drawn renewed scrutiny, including his past defense of the Crusades, the brutal medieval wars that pitted Christians against Muslims.

Statements of faith are common in American public life, across political parties and religious traditions. Pentagon aides and Hegseth’s defenders pull examples from history, such as President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s support of giving Bibles to troops. Hegseth regularly cites George Washington, who pushed to establish the military chaplain corps.

Hegseth often goes beyond standard calls for God to bless the country or its troops. Last week, he asked Americans to pray for service members “in the name of Jesus Christ.” On Wednesday, he again prayed in Jesus’ name.

We are floundering we are on the road to disaster!  The Washington Post goes on to write,

Americans United earlier this week sued the Defense Department for not turning over public records requests about the Hegseth-led Christian prayer services at the Pentagon. In a release, it said Hegseth is abusing his position and taxpayer funds to impose his preferred religion.

“Even if these prayer services are presented as voluntary, there is pressure on federal employees to attend in order to appease their bosses — especially since these services occur amidst the Trump administration’s campaign to punish anyone who doesn’t comply with its Christian Nationalist agenda,” AU wrote.

Hegseth’s change comes as the Supreme Court has in recent years weakened church-state separation and supercharged the free exercise of religion. Among the concepts the justices are reexamining are what constitutes religious coercion and an illegal government “establishment” of religion.

Couple an military with a Christian Nationalist and we have a problem! A question arises, is Hegseth promoting generals with his religious views and firing those who don't?

“I think the morale is very high, because we don’t have admirals in dresses, who aren’t supposed to be wearing dresses. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced two major changes to the military's chaplaincy corps on March 24, one of which will mean chaplains will no longer wear their rank insignia.

They will instead display their religious insignia while retaining their rank as officers. They "will be seen among the highest ranks because of their divine calling," Hegseth said in a video posted to X.

The change reflects Hegseth's wider effort to infuse the chaplaincy, and the military more broadly, with more explicitly religious sentiments.

A smaller, more streamlined system will support chaplains in "minister(ing) to service members in a way that aligns with that service member’s faith background and religious practice," said Hegseth, adding that the Pentagon is "not even close to being done" in taking steps toward "restoring the esteemed position of chaplain."

Stars and Stripes writes,

Since 2017, the Defense Department has recognized 221 groups as religious denominations or belief systems, ranging from mainstream to obscure Christian sects, Wiccans and atheists. That system was impractical and unusual, Hegseth said this week. Moving forward, the Pentagon will use 31 religious affiliation codes. “This brings the codes in line with its original purpose: giving chaplains clear, usable information, so they can minister to service members in a way that aligns with that service member’s faith background and religious practice,” he said.

Will only conservative religions will be covered? That liberal religions will be pushed aside?

 

So does that mean... a gay or lesbian servicemember comes it that they will try to make them straight? Or want about a woman who is having an abortion what will the chaplain more "explicitly religious sentiments" try to talk her out of having an abortion?

During Islam’s holy month of Ramadan, when Muslims around the world fast from dawn to sunset and gather with family and neighbors each evening to break that fast, the American right is manufacturing outrage about Muslims in public life. Worse yet, they are turning it into a vehicle for increasingly explicit calls to push Muslims out of American society altogether. 

What should have been a straightforward story about an anti-Muslim rally escalating into violence instead became a right-wing media opportunity to cast New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and by extension all Muslims, as the villain. Saturday’s protest outside Gracie Mansion, the city’s mayoral residence, was explicitly billed as a demonstration against the supposed “Islamic takeover of New York City.” Organized by Jake Lang, a pardoned Jan. 6 insurrectionist who promised to burn a Quran, the event attracted counter-protesters. Amid the chaos, two men allegedly hurled improvised explosive devices (IEDs) filled with bolts and screws into the crowd of anti-Muslim protesters.

So, are we to believe that the people who showed up to a mayor's residence to throw bombs loaded with nails and screws are now the "heroes" of the MAGA movement?

Within hours, right-wing media and Republican politicians had reframed the entire episode into a grievance against Mamdani himself. The logic was almost comically circular: an anti-Muslim rally was held outside the home of a Muslim mayor and violence erupted, therefore the mayor’s response was suspect. When Mamdani criticized the Islamophobia driving the rally, that criticism itself became the outrage. Even the New York Times curiously questioned why Mamdani “did not turn to his typical means of communication,” like “short-form videos posted to social media about the attack.”

And yet, they are the ones claiming that liberals are the terrorists?

You know, he reminds me of Beavis and Butt-Head! It’s the way he slicks back his hair; he thinks it makes him look cool, but instead, he looks sinister—even evil. Who? Hegseth!

He wrote a book titled American Crusade (2020), where he explicitly argues that the United States is in a "holy war" for its survival. He has claimed the enemy is not just foreign terrorists, but also domestic "leftists," "globalists," and "Islamists" who threaten Western Judeo-Christian values. The most frightening part is that he fantasizes about being a crusader "much like the 11th century," helping to bring about the "End Times."

Even the naming of military actions under this mindset feels apocalyptic—like the strike on Iran, ominously dubbed "Operation Epic Fury." Hegseth didn’t just stumble into the job; he has exactly what Trump wants to appeal to his Christian Nationalist base. Hegseth’s warped worldview is that of a deeply-held theological and political fanatic who views conflict as a moral and religious necessity. To his supporters, he’s a "defender of the faith"; to his critics, he is someone looking for a "battle" that feels like a holy war.

Hegseth isn't just someone who stumbled into the job; he has a very specific, deeply-held theological and political worldview that views conflict as a moral and religious necessity. That's exactly what Trump wanted, to his supporters, he's a "defender of the faith"; to his critics, he’s exactly what you described—someone looking for a "battle" that feels like a holy war.

However, what is getting people's attention is what he said about the rules of combat... The Guardian reported that in his book he said,

Pete Hegseth, the US defense secretary, told soldiers under his command in Iraq to ignore legal advice about when they were permitted to kill enemy combatants under their rules of engagement.

The anecdote is contained in a book Hegseth wrote last year in which he also repeatedly railed against the constraints placed on “American warfighters” by the laws of war and the Geneva conventions.

Hegseth is currently under scrutiny for a 2 September attack on a boat purportedly carrying drugs in the Caribbean, where survivors of a first strike on the vessel were reportedly killed in a second strike following a verbal order from Hegseth to “kill everybody”.

Hegseth has denied giving the order and retained the support of Donald Trump. The US president said Hegseth told him “he did not say that, and I believe him, 100%”. But some US senators have raised the possibility that the US war secretary committed a war crime.

At one point, Hegseth writes: “We send men to fight on our behalf, and then second-guess the manner in which they fight. I saw it every day.”

Hegseth adds: “In some cases, our units were so boxed in by rules and regulations and political correctness, we even second-guess ourselves. That needs to end. Count me out on the Monday-morning quarterbacking – I’m with the American warfighter, all the way.”

Elsewhere, Hegseth appears to argue that American soldiers should proceed without any constraints whatsoever.

And now in beginning of this war what was said has raised eyebrow, Military.com writes,

A combat-unit commander told non-commissioned officers at a briefing Monday that the Iran war is part of God’s plan and that President Donald Trump was “anointed by Jesus to light the signal fire in Iran to cause Armageddon and mark his return to Earth,” according to independent journalist Jonathan Larsen as published on Substack.

You have to wonder... who those generals owe their allegiance to? The Constitution or the Bible!

“He urged us to tell our troops that this was ‘all part of God’s divine plan’ and he specifically referenced numerous citations out of the Book of Revelation referring to Armageddon and the imminent return of Jesus Christ,” the NCO wrote in the email. “He said that ‘President Trump has been anointed by Jesus to light the signal fire in Iran to cause Armageddon and mark his return to Earth.’"

The NCO added that the commander supposedly “had a big grin on his face when he said all of this, which made his message seem even more crazy.”

This whole invasion mission stinks to high heaven! It almost seems like they want to bring on WWIII for the glory of god!

A combat-unit commander told non-commissioned officers at a briefing Monday that the Iran war is part of God’s plan and that President Donald Trump was “anointed by Jesus to light the signal fire in Iran to cause Armageddon and mark his return to Earth,” according to independent journalist Jonathan Larsen as published on Substack.

That complaint was made by a non-commissioned officer and provided to the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF), which from Saturday morning through Monday evening received and logged more than 110 complaints about commanders in every branch of the military.

I don’t know about you, but I find it disturbing that military commanders are relating the war to the end of the world.

The Baptist News reported that,

U.S. military personnel are being briefed by superiors that ongoing combat operations in Iran are willed by God and will help usher in the end times, according to independent journalist Jonathan Larsen.

In one instance, the commander of a combat unit told noncommissioned officers “that the Iran war is part of God’s plan and that Pres. Donald Trump was ‘anointed by Jesus to light the signal fire in Iran to cause Armageddon and mark his return to Earth,’ according to a complaint by a noncommissioned officer,” Larsen reported on his Substack.

The report draws on similar complaints to the Military Religious Freedom Foundation from personnel in more than 40 units located in at least 30 installations. The complaints have been coming in since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran Feb. 28.

I worry that this could lead toward a coup attempt if Trump were ever impeached. Having an army that believes Trump was appointed by God is downright scary.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has made no secret of his adherence to a nationalist and militaristic form of Christianity. He has established prayer meetings within the Pentagon and recently claimed Americans go to heaven if they die in combat.

“These calls have one damn thing in freaking common: Our MRFF clients (service members who seek MRFF aid) report the unrestricted euphoria of their commanders and command chains as to how this new ‘biblically-sanctioned’ war is clearly the undeniable sign of the expeditious approach of the fundamentalist Christian ‘end times’ as vividly described in the New Testament book of Revelation,” Weinstein said.

Larsen wrote: “Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has enshrined evangelical Christianity at the uppermost levels of the U.S. military, airing monthly prayer meetings throughout the Pentagon. Last year, the Pentagon confirmed to me that Hegseth attends a weekly White House Bible study. It’s led by a preacher who says God commands America to support Israel.”

Are you worried yet? And this was written by a Baptist newspaper.

They want war. They want to bring about the end of the world. And these people have the nuclear codes.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth makes no secret of the fact that he sees himself as a crusader leading the battle toward Armageddon and the return of Jesus. I fear he wants to turn the United States into a Christian version of Iran.

Does that cross on Hegseth’s chest look familiar? It is the Crusader’s Cross (also known as the Jerusalem Cross), the one that knights wore into battle against the “infidels.” He also reportedly has “Deus Vult” tattooed on his arm — “God wills it,” the battle cry of the First Crusade in 1095.

He wrote a book literally called American Crusade, calling for a modern-day holy war against Muslims. He also got a new tattoo reading “كافر” (kafir) in Arabic — a deliberate provocation against 2 billion Muslims from the man commanding the most powerful military on Earth. He is the embodiment of the American Taliban.
