This Says A Lot

When you see refugees you don't think about it happening here, but it is... through out history people have fled oppression. The Bible is full of tails about people being forced to leave their place of birth.

Aaron Slayton lives and works at Five-Acre Farm Daylilies a few miles outside of Tolono, with their husband, Jim Wuersch.

They first came to Illinois in January to visit and help him deal with the grief of his late husband’s death. After helping around the house and farm for a few months, Wuersch asked Slayton to move in permanently.

“I technically never went back home after coming down,” they said.

In Tennessee, many laws restrict LGBTQ+ identity and gender expression. It was ranked among the lowest-rated states on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s annual State Equality Index report, which reviews legislation impacting the LGBTQ+ community.

But in addition to anti-trans legislation, the broader debate around transgender identity has become more hostile, creating a widespread sense of fear among many trans people.

Slayton said they weren’t welcomed at gendered support groups for victims of sexual violence, they were turned away from food pantries operated by Christian churches and they were often harassed in stores or restaurants they frequented in Nashville.

“There were a lot of times that I just didn’t feel safe,” they said. “So I kind of quit going.”
But this isn't unique to Tennessee...

Up to an estimated $879 million in LGBTQ+ household and business income has left Missouri in recent years, as queer residents flee a hostile political environment, according to a recent analysis by the Movement Advancement Project (MAP).

The state lawmakers responsible for creating this financial drain were warned, the Missouri Independent reports.

For years, business organizations, advocacy groups, and individuals cautioned officials pushing discriminatory laws that the economic fallout would be one deleterious result.

Local officials and chambers of commerce raised red flags about impacts on workforce recruitment, employee retention, and the ability to lure businesses to the state.

[...]

“When people feel unwelcome or uncertain about their future in a community, they often take their skills and their families elsewhere,” Tracey DeMarea, executive director of the Mid-America LGBT Chamber of Commerce, told The Independent. “That loss affects our workforce, our businesses, and our shared sense of community.”
Think beyond the bigotry against the LGBTQ+, think what it says about a state who doesn't care about all the people in the state. Think beyond to the fact that the state is actually creating animosity toward its citizens.

Lizette Trujillo climbs into a taxi two months after she and her family moved abroad with two items in her purse: her U.S. passport and a bottle of Mexican hot sauce.

The latter, a relic of her heritage as the daughter of immigrants, is scarce at the local restaurants in her new home more than 5,000 miles away from the one-story Tucson, Ariz., home she purchased in 2023, not knowing her family would be fleeing the U.S. out of fear for the health and safety of her trans son less than two years later.

Trujillo and her family are not the only Americans who have left the U.S. amid mounting restrictions on transgender rights. Rainbow Railroad, a global nonprofit that helps LGBTQ+ people escape state-sponsored violence, has received a record-high number of requests for help from U.S. citizens since Trump’s reelection, according to Latoya Nugent, head of engagement at the organization. “That trend has continued,” she says. “The U.S. continues to be the number one country where people are requesting help from,” as of Oct. 6. Around two-thirds of the requests the group has received are from people who are transgender.
Like some third world country people are flee their homes because of oppression.
Many trans people are moving within the country rather than seeking to leave the U.S. altogether. Nearly half of the transgender adults in the U.S. have relocated or are planning to relocate to another state that they believe to be more affirming to gender-diverse individuals, according to a May report by the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law.

As bans and restrictions have increased, states such as Oregon, Vermont, Connecticut, and Maryland have enacted shield laws to protect patients who cross state lines seeking gender-affirming care—and the health care professionals that provide it—from prosecution in other states. Local leaders are taking protective measures as well. Boston and California’s Long Beach and West Hollywood have all enacted resolutions or ordinances declaring themselves sanctuary cities for transgender people or the broader LGBTQ+ community.
Fleeing to safe havens!

The University of Illinois student newspaper ends with...
“What will make a difference and what will impact people is knowing that they have a community that actually cares about them,” Slayton said.

Running From Oppression!

In Uganda LGBTQ+ people are fleeing because of the possible death sentence for being LGBTQ+.

In between leading Sunday services at All Saints’ Cathedral in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, Rev. Canon John Awodi declares vehemently that “homosexuality is a sin that must be repented of,” adding that it is against the “order of God.”

“Homosexuality is not natural, it is unnatural. That is the stand of the church here. It is unbiblical, it is unnatural,” the Anglican cleric told CNN.

These themes have become a common thread in his sermons and interviews, especially since Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act was signed into law last month.

The act outlaws gay marriage in Uganda, punishes same-sex acts with life imprisonment, and calls for the death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality” – which includes sex with a minor or otherwise vulnerable person, having sex while HIV positive and incest.

Oh… wait. Did I mention that this wasn’t Uganda but Texas?

Another update, we are moving! Still in Connecticut, but our first place in CT was temporary to give us time to find a place that is a good fit for us. Thanks to every one of y’all, the GFM lasted exactly long enough to cover moving costs, furnish our little apartment, and cushion the monthly expenses here through the end of the lease while we searched for housing within my budget. I can never thank y’all adequately for how you’ve helped us. Watching the Texas legislative session has reminded me daily how much I needed you to help me protect Kai and you showed up and made it happen.
On this Fourth of July, does this sound like America? Where we have political refugees? Where people have to flee from where they grew up because they could be jailed just for being the way they were born? Or does it sound like Uganda?

“Or The Right of the People Peaceably to Assemble”

That is right out of the First Amendment, you know the one that that the Republicans are always quoting? They have a hard time reading it after freedom of religion.

The organizers of the upcoming ‘PRIDE in St. Cloud’ scheduled for June 10 cancelled the event on Friday.

In a Facebook post and in social media, a spokesperson for Bozanich Photography Collaborative the primary organization wrote: “This decision was not made lightly. We have been working hard to plan this event for months, and we were excited to celebrate our community with you. However, we have recently become aware of a number of factors that make it unsafe to hold this event at this time”

On Thursday, Orlando media outlets reported on a traffic sign in suburban Lake Nona, located 12 miles north of St. Cloud, at Lake Nona Boulevard and Nemours Parkway, had its traffic message altered to flash the message “KILL ALL GAYS” in the pre-dawn hours on Wednesday.

An LGTBQ+ pride event usually held along the riverwalk in Tampa, Florida, has been canceled after hard-right Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bevy of anti-LGBTQ+ bills into law this week.

Tampa Pride President Carrie West confirmed to several local news outlets that the event, called Tampa Pride on the River, would not go ahead in September because it features drag performances at a public venue. One of the state’s new laws targets drag where it might be visible to minors.

“In the end, we didn’t want to take any chances,” West told the Tampa Bay Times on Thursday.

“Really, I’m sorry,” West told WFLA, an NBC affiliate.

The event usually draws around 20,000 people to downtown Tampa for food, drinks and entertainment in an area without any fencing, according to a St. Petersburg CBS affiliate.

It is at least the second pride event to be canceled as Florida Republicans continue to attack the LGBTQ+ community. Officials in Port St. Lucie — a city north of West Palm Beach — axed a pride parade last month.

Organizers in St. Cloud, Florida, announced this week they would be canceling an LGBTQ+ Pride festival next month, joining at least two other events as casualties of Florida’s extreme new anti-LGBTQ+ laws while other event organizers double down.

The St. Cloud organizers wrote on social media that their decision to cancel the event in June — which is Pride Month — was “difficult” and “not made lightly.”

As LGBTQ Pride Month approaches, anti-drag bills are endangering pride events and businesses that serve LGBTQ people across the country, LGBTQ organizers have warned.

Just since April, Port St. Lucie, Florida, canceled its pride parade after Florida lawmakers passed a bill targeting businesses that host drag performances; the largest performing arts center in northwest Arkansas announced that it would no longer be hosting a pride event; and the only lesbian bar in Houston, Texas, was denied insurance because the bar hosts drag shows, which may force the business to shutter its doors.

“This is the goal, they want to eliminate LGBTQ people from public life,” said Alejandra Caraballo, a trans rights activist and civil rights attorney.

The Hill has an article that says not all Pride organization are backing down,
As other community organizations have canceled events, Florida’s Lake City Pride shared in a Facebook post that it “will never back down” and it “stood firm and united in fighting against the ‘Drag Ban.'”

“No unconstitutional law will keep us from celebrating our PRIDE event,” the post added.

Unbowed, Proud Boys are planning now for their biggest Pride Month disruptions ever, extremism watchdogs warn

Unbowed by the recent January 6 sedition convictions of four former group leaders, the Proud Boys are now more active than ever, and are busy planning disruptive protests at Pride month celebrations across the country in June, according to extremism watchdogs and their own social media.

The group is calling their counter-offensive "Proud" month, a celebration of "straight pride" and "Western values" designed to provoke violence, grow their membership, and — as one member posted recently on an internal planning channel on Telegram — "challenge this perversion of the Nuclear Family and Gender."

[…]

"What happened last year, it was probably just a whiff of what we might see this year, after 12 months of organizing," Bierich said.

"It's a dangerous thing, because the Proud Boys are all about violence, and so are the Patriot Front, she said. "Not necessarily firearms, but with bats, shields, and — most usually — with their fists."

The Proud Boys have been planning their Pride offensive on a series of Telegram channels for at least two months.

They are using the channels to share anti-trans vitriol and memes, including one joking that "LGBTQ" stands for "Let's Go Bully The Queers," and others mocking transgender — or "tranny" —  suicide.

Pride was began as a rebellion against oppression and then it turned into a celebration of the community… and now?

We have seen this before when NAZI Germany had their Brownshirt attack Jews, Gypsies, and us.
Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
The amendments were written to keep government from doing just what Florida, Texas, Tennessee, Arkansas, and the other Republican states from doing just what they are doing now.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are facing mounting criticism over its decision to withdraw an invitation it extended to a group called The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to participate in the team's annual LGBTQ+ Pride Night.

Ahead of its June 16 Pride Night, the organization decided the nonprofit it intended to honor would no longer be invited due to backlash from Catholic organizations who find the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to be "mocking" them.

"I was shocked to be completely honest," said Sister Bearonce Knows of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. "I was shocked that the Dodgers caved so quickly."

[…]

The Dodgers said they removed the Sisters from this year's group of honorees given the strong feelings of people who have been offended, and to not distract from Pride Night.

Backlash came primarily from three directions: out-of-state based organizations Catholic Vote and Catholic League, plus Florida Sen. Marco Rubio's office.

The Chilling Effect.

[Editorial]

Stop and think, what this witch hunt is doing.

When I went to college you chose your classes, there were three or four taught at the same time and you picked which class you wanted. There were hard professors, there were easy professors. There were some neat classes and some boring classes. There were liberal professors, there were conservative professors. And there were some liberal colleges and some conservative colleges… You picked your choices.

PBAU professor is being investigated for teaching racial justice in class. Here's what university says.

Samuel Joeckel has taught the same writing composition class at Palm Beach Atlantic University for more than a decade. And while he says the course has not changed much in years, the world he teaches in has.

The veteran English professor says he learned just how much last week when he received a visit after class from a dean and the school’s provost.

The somber-faced administrators told him Wednesday that his annual contract renewal, usually a formality, was being postponed while they investigated a claim he was “indoctrinating” students with discussions about racial justice, he recalled.

A parent, it seemed, had called to complain.

OMG! A parent complained!

“PBAU administration has never voiced any concern about my racial justice unit over the last 12 years,” he said. “This was the first time. And it’s also the time when they informed me that they may not renew my contract.”

His teaching was never a problem until the conservatives started their offensive on “Woke” and liberal professors.

Some of Joeckel’s former students say the move against him coincides with what they see as a move by school leaders to identify more visibly with conservative politics and political leaders

A turning point, some said, was in 2020, when it angered some students by naming first lady Melania Trump as its annual “woman of distinction.”

“I think that was the mark of when things really started to change and the culture started to change,” said Danielle Hawk, a former student and school employee who is now among those clamoring for Joeckel to keep his job.

They are banning books claiming that the books are obscene and phonographic but what the books really are is a threat to the right-wing ideology. They are books on LGBTQ+, and they are books on Black history.

They say that we are “indoctrinating” and “grooming” but in reality they are the one who are want to control the children and make then fear those who are different! They are the ones who want to wipe out “liberals” and “free thinkers.”

This has a very chilling effect on professors and teachers!

This has a very chilling effect on society!

This has a very chilling affect on the LGBTQ and Black children!

This teaches that it okay to discriminate and bully those who are different from them.

The conservatives want to turn us in to an authoritarian banana republic.
