Another day, another outdated, outmoded, and anachronistic politician saying something ridiculous and offensive. This time it's the turn of former Chairman of the British Conservative Party, Lord Norman Tebbit, who has written in a national newspaper that he thinks pollution is making people transgender.

In a comment piece in The Telegraph, the 86-year-old Peer, who it is worth noting has a pretty detailed record of speaking out against LGBT+ rights, claims that the rise in people identifying as transgender is possibly down to the increase in pollution, and that science backs him up. I fear this might be overkill, but science really doesn’t.

“I think it is time we had some research into the extent of the phenomenon both in time and geographical reach,” wrote Lord Tebbit. “I do not know if the populations of third world or of urban or of rural societies are more or less affected.”

Predictably, this isn’t the first time that a British politician has come up with some bat-shit explanation for the increase in people identifying as LGBT+. Only earlier this year a Liberal Democrat (yeah, the irony isn’t lost on us either) parliamentary candidate Susan King claimed that “there are a lot of feminising hormones getting into the environment and that has to be taken into consideration; it's affecting people's sexuality, basically.”

In other words, she thinks that the water is making people gay. The idea of gay water has been floating around the internet for some time now, with the ever measured and grounded Alex Jones being one of the theory's biggest champions. Speaking in soft, not at all terrifying tones from his InfoWars studio, Jones has previously raged against the fact that gay water is making men put on short skirts and wear lipstick. Which, I’m sure you don’t really need reminding, is not actually the same thing as being a homosexual.

Let's start the rumor that it is because of plastic bottled water, maybe we can help the environment.

You know we have been around since the beginning of time. Look at ancient Greece there were gays, lesbians, and trans people back then. It wasn’t until modern times that we were forced underground by the Church and politicians. You ever hear of the Mollies and Tommies? Look them up.

We Get Shot Down North Of The Border

In Canada the House of Commons the Speaker of the House of Commons quashed a hate crime bill to protect us, in a commentary in the Halifax Chronicle Herald they wrote…

On Monday, Andrew Scheer, Speaker of the House of Commons, killed a vote to extend hate crime protection to transgender people, citing an obscure parliamentary rule.

He has taken a strictly minimalist interpretation of his job. On Monday, the Speaker wouldn’t even allow a vote on hate crimes protection for transgender people because, technically, the House would be repeating itself. The House had already approved this policy, but it is stalled in the Senate. So Randall Garrison, the NDP MP for Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca, tried another route: adding it to the government’s omnibus cyberbullying bill.

It seems that the conservatives behave the same on both sides of the border.

Gay Friendly v. Trans Friendly

There is a big difference. Many times you see about a tour being LGBT friendly but really what they mean is gay and lesbian friendly especially if you are able to assimilate into sociality as a heterosexual. It is those who fall outside of the gender norms that feel the greatest discrimination.

There was a cruise line that offered a Drag cruise but said that,

These functions will be private and only the performers are permitted to dress in drag while in the theater. Guests are not allowed to dress in drag for the performances or in public areas at any time during the cruise.

Fort Lauderdale bills itself as “Gay Friendly” but according to an article in Sun Sentinel it is not trans-friendly,

In August, some 700 members of the transgender community across 48 states participated in the online survey conducted by Community Marketing & Insights, a San Francisco-based specialty marketing and research firm.

Only 10 percent of participants perceived Fort Lauderdale to be very trans-friendly, the study revealed.

Nearly half (48 percent) of respondents polled perceived Fort Lauderdale as not being transgender-friendly, while 43 percent said it was somewhat trans-friendly, according to the study commissioned by the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau.

"We know a lot about gay and lesbian travelers, but little if anything has been known about the transgender traveler, until now," said Richard Gray, the bureau's managing director of the LGBT market. "Now is the time for the Greater Fort Lauderdale CVB to emphasize the importance of the T in LGBT. The forgotten T, I'm saddened to say."

I know someone who was down there with her girlfriend when they were harassed by some straight teens, guest who the police focused on, my trans-friend and her girlfriend. The police advised to go back to their hotel and stay out the area.

The Southern Comfort conference is moving to Fort Lauderdale next year, it should be interesting to see just how trans-friendly the city will be. The conference will be held at the Bonaventure Resort & Spa and I wonder just how those who venture outside of hotel will be treated at restaurants, bars and other public accommodations.

…And to stir up the hate vote. Some candidates really don’t care if what they say is true as long as it gets them elected.

California Assembly candidate Young Kim hopes to win votes in one of the state’s tightest races by attacking a new law requiring schools to allow transgender students to use bathrooms of their choice and participate in sports by their gender identity rather than their anatomical gender.

“That doesn't represent the values of this community,” the Fullerton Republican said. She also expressed concerns about practical repercussions. “This bill adds a giant additional burden to our schools.”

But school districts contacted by the Register said they’ve experienced no increased costs or drain on resources. They said the impact of the law, which took effect Jan. 1, has been minimal and what changes it has brought have been positive.

Her opponent knows what she is trying to do…

Assembly District 65 incumbent Sharon Quirk-Silva, D-Fullerton, said Kim is preying on misunderstanding and fear for political gain.

“I understand, in the way it’s being described, why parents would be afraid,” said Quirk-Silva, who backed the law in a largely party-line vote. “They’re trying to present is as a divisive, fearful issue.”

The conservatives tried to get a recall on the ballot by creating fear but failed and now this Republican is trying to get elected by trying to fan the fires if bigotry.

Little Victories, But We Will Take Any That We Can Get

Not that for these people the victories were little, but for us every step forward is progress.

In Alaska, you can now change your gender on your driver’s license which is an important step forward for us. I remember before I transitioned I had to show my driver license to a bouncer at the door. When he looked at my picture and name, a big grin came on his face as he handed my license back.

The lieutenant governor of Alaska has filed a new regulation that would make it easier for transgender citizens to change their gender on their driver’s licenses to the sex they desire without undergoing surgery. The American Civil Liberties Union, which was instrumental in alerting the Alaskan government to the need for such a change, issued a statement revealing Juneau’s regulation.

Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell, a Republican, filed the measure last week, which will go into effect on August 11. The regulation comes after the ACLU and the ACLU of Alaska challenged a requirement that forced transgender drivers to prove they had undergone surgery as a violation of an individual’s right to privacy.

"The previous requirement had nothing to do with accepted medical standards and demonstrated a callous lack of understanding of what it means to be transgender," said John Knight, staff attorney with the ACLU Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender Project. "The government should not be in the business of dictating anyone’s medical care, especially when it comes to requiring surgery that may not be available, desired, or medically necessary."

"This agreement reflects a basic understanding that the government should not be in the business of telling transgender Illinoisans what kind of surgery they need to undergo," said John Knight, Director of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Project at the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois. "It creates a new opportunity to obtain an accurate birth certificate for many people — including a number of persons who have been denied new birth certificates over the years who have not undergone genital surgery, because they have no medical need for it, are concerned about its risks, or cannot afford it."

This is BIG step in the right direction, as the article points out there are many trans-people who cannot afford surgery or for some medical reason having surgery would put their life in danger or just simply because they feel that they don’t need surgery. After all, what is a birth certificate for? It is for identification and when you need to present it for identification they are not going to check to see what is between your legs, they are going to go by the way you presenting yourself as male or female.

On June 21st trans athlete Keelin Godsey came within one meter of making Olympic history. The 28-year-old had already managed 69 meters in the hammer throw. He needed to toss the hammer 71.5 meters in the final qualifying trials. He did succeed in tossing a personal best, 70.49, but was just shy of making the cut for the US Olympic Team in the women’s hammer throw.

Had Godsey made the team, he would have been the first openly trans athlete to compete in any Olympics event. In the video interview below, Ann Schatz talks with him about the challenges of his journey.

Congratulation! It is a major step forward for both Keelin Godsey and the Olympics.

SHAWANO, WISCONSIN - What's love got to do with it? Not much, especially if you say the words "I love you" in the Menominee language in front of a certain Wisconsin teacher.

Seventh grader Miranda Washinawatok, Menominee, found this out.

Miranda speaks two languages: Menominee and English. She also plays on her basketball team. However, two Thursdays ago she was suspended for one basketball game because she spoke Menominee to a fellow classmate during class.

Miranda attends Sacred Heart Catholic Academy in Shawano, Wisconsin. The school body is over 60 percent American Indian. The school is approximately six miles from the south border of the Menominee Indian Tribe Reservation.

The principal told Washinawatok that the assistant coach told him she was told by two teachers to bench Miranda for attitude problems.

The alleged 'attitude problem' turned out to be that Miranda said the Menominee word

    “posoh”
    that means
    “hello”

and said

    “Ketapanen”

in Menominee that means "I love you."

Miranda and a fellow classmate were talking to each other when Miranda told her how to say "Hello" and "I love you" in Menominee.

Unfortunately, I doubt much can be done because it is a private religious school. Unless they are receiving public funding they can discriminate all they want. But this incident is something out of the 1800s when missionaries took the Native American children from their families and forced them to lean the ways of the white man, it was despicable then and now it is even unconscionable that it is still happening. They should be teaching Menominee and celebrating their heritage instead of punishing the children.

The school did send out an apology letter...

Washinawatok has had a total of three meetings with school officials and was promised Miranda would receive a public apology, as would the Menominee Tribe, and the apologies would be publically placed.

"On Wednesday, a letter was sent to parents and guardians. A real generic letter of apology, that really did not go into specifics as to why there was this apology,"

The letter is nice, but one, it should never have happened in the first place and second, it took three meeting with school officials before the letter was sent out.

Rape!

When a person is raped, it shouldn’t matter what their gender is, it shouldn’t matter what the gender of the perpetrator is. But it does in Sweden; it seems that according to the courts that a trans-person cannot be raped.

Man Acquitted of Attempted Rape Because His Victim WasTransgendered

This week a Swedish judge acquitted a man who attempted to rape a transgender victim. The perpetrator, who attacked a transgender woman outside of her apartment complex, stated that he believed his victim was a woman. After he pulled off her clothes and grabbed her crotch, the attacker discovered male genitalia. The victim and her ex-partner were able to pull the man off of her before police came to arrest him.

The legal system in Sweden offered no extra help to the victim in court proceedings. The reasoning behind the acquittal of the attacker? The perpetrator claimed that he believed his victim was a woman with female genitalia. The court sided with this explanation adding, as quoted by Queerty, “We believe that he wanted to rape… this woman. But as she proved to be a man, his plan [would] never have been possible.”

The court claims that since the attacker believed he was going to rape a woman with female genitalia his intended crime was basically only possible on an imaginary level, never mind that he forcefully removed clothing and grabbed at the victim’s body with every intention of violating her.

The judge concluded that the rape was “invalid” because the victim was anatomically a male. Instead, the rapist was convicted of assault and will pay just over $2,000 in damages to the woman.

This is Sweden! The country that was supposed to be so progressive, the country that brought us the porn flicks of the 70s.

Does that mean that there can be no rape if the person is the same sex as the rapist? Or does it just mean that raping a trans-person is legal?

The article does say that the ruling is being appealed to a higher court and that they expect the ruling to be overturned, let’s hope so.  

DADT… What’s Missing

Now that all the celebration has died down over Don’t Ask, Didn’t Tell, it is time to look at the missing part of DADT. I believe that in most of the other NATO countries they allow trans-people to serve openly in the military. I remember reading once a news articles about how in Britain the military were actively recruiting trans-people and in Canada they were discussing when a military trans-person should start wearing the uniform of their true gender. But here in the US we are still throwing out trans-people of the military.

But, the Pentagon can do more than one thing at a time, so it's a real shame.''

Transgender service is not allowed, Bryan [A trans-man that OutServe interviewed for the article] says, for two reasons. ''You can't be transgender and in the military because it's considered a medical disqualification on the basis of the hormones and the surgery. They just assume trans people have 'the surgery.' And then, there's a psychological disqualification because they see it as having gender identity disorder.

There is no law preventing a trans-person from serving in the military, all it will take is a policy decision to allow trans-people to serve in the military. It will not require Congress to pass anything, it will only take the President to write an executive order or the Secretary of Defense to issue an order to bring about the change to bring us up to the level of the rest of the NATO countries.

The European Parliament this week voted to pass a resolution calling on the World Health Organisation (WHO) to stop classifying transgender people as mentally ill.

The text of the resolution, passed Wednesday, reads:

“The European Parliament calls on the Commission and the World Health Organization to withdraw gender identity disorders from the list of mental and behavioral disorders, and ensure a non-pathologizing reclassification in the negotiations on the 11th version of the International Classification of Diseases.”

A statement from Dutch MEP Emine Bozkurt who authored the amendment comes via Pink News:

“Transgender identities are still considered a mental disorder by the World Health Organisation. This must be changed urgently, and certainly by the time the next version comes into effect in 2015.

“Transgender people wishing to live in a body that matches their identity are of course entitled to medical treatment and its benefits, but the negative stigma surrounding them must stop.”

This would be a step in the right direction. The APA is scheduled to release DSM V early next year and it should be interesting to see what the APA has finally settled on, my fears are the that it will be much worse than we now have. The EU is step in the right direction, but I don’t think we will also see much change there.

Therapists

We look at them as Gate Keepers; they control our path to our hormones. Sometimes we get therapist who know nothing about us and we have to train them. Sometimes we get a therapist who follows the Standard of Care like a bible. Sometimes we get a therapist who believe that we can be “Cured”. And once in a while we find a great therapist, the Albany Times Union has an article about such therapists…

It seems like a simple question, with an obvious and clear-cut answer.

But for psychotherapists Moonhawk River Stone, of Schenectady, and Arlene Istar Lev, of Albany, complicated responses are at the core of their private practices in transgender care.

The way a person answers the question, ranging from certitude to confusion, holds the key to treatment options.

Both therapists view gender with a wider lens than a binary classification of either male or female. Rather than dealing with black and white distinctions, they work with clients who express themselves in many shades of gray when it comes to gender.

"The problem is that even a majority of social workers and therapists know nothing about this issue," Lev said. "We're just beginning to see more therapists seeking out specialized training, which is still hard to find."

I have known Hawk for over six years, we first met at the “Targeted State” conference in Albany that was given by the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. I have never met Lev, but I have read her book and also I used it as a reference in many of my term papers.

In 2006, long before costume shops first began selling tri-corner hats to early adopters of the tea party movement, professors David E. Campbell and Robert D. Putnam "interviewed a representative sample of 3,000 Americans" about their "political attitudes." By re-interviewing many of the same people this summer, they were able to determine what type of person eventually became a tea partier. Some of what they found is about as shocking as an episode of Full House: Current tea-party supporters were likely to have been "highly partisan Republicans," and "even compared to other white Republicans, they had a low regard for immigrants and blacks long before Barack Obama was president."[…]

Shocking? No, really if you read the CBS/New York Times poll back in April of 2010…

18% of Americans identify as Tea Party supporters of those…

• 89% are White
• 58% live in the Midwest or the South
• 75% are 45 years old or older
• 73% are Conservatives
• 39% are Evangelicals
• 76% make over $50,000
• 54% are Republicans
• 63% say they get the majority of their political and current events news on television from the Fox News Channel
• 84% say the views of the Tea Party movement reflect the views of most Americans (However, Americans overall disagree: Just 25 percent say the Tea Party movement reflects their beliefs, while 36 percent say it does not)
• 30% say they believe Mr. Obama was born in another country
• 92% say that President Obama's policies are moving the country toward socialism (Compared to 52% of American)
• 93% say the economy as at least somewhat bad, and 42% say it is getting worse.
• 82% say they see illegal immigration as a serious problem
• 66% say they doubt the impact of global warming
• 40% say they oppose same-sex marriage and civil unions

GIVEN how much sway the Tea Party has among Republicans in Congress and those seeking the Republican presidential nomination, one might think the Tea Party is redefining mainstream American politics.

But in fact the Tea Party is increasingly swimming against the tide of public opinion: among most Americans, even before the furor over the debt limit, its brand was becoming toxic. To embrace the Tea Party carries great political risk for Republicans, but perhaps not for the reason you might think.

Of course, politicians of all stripes are not faring well among the public these days. But in data we have recently collected, the Tea Party ranks lower than any of the 23 other groups we asked about — lower than both Republicans and Democrats. It is even less popular than much maligned groups like “atheists” and “Muslims.” Interestingly, one group that approaches it in unpopularity is the Christian Right.

More important, they [Tea Partiers] were disproportionately social conservatives in 2006 — opposing abortion, for example — and still are today. Next to being a Republican, the strongest predictor of being a Tea Party supporter today was a desire, back in 2006, to see religion play a prominent role in politics. And Tea Partiers continue to hold these views: they seek “deeply religious” elected officials, approve of religious leaders’ engaging in politics and want religion brought into political debates. The Tea Party’s generals may say their overriding concern is a smaller government, but not their rank and file, who are more concerned about putting God in government.

This inclination among the Tea Party faithful to mix religion and politics explains their support for Representative Michele Bachmann of Minnesota and Gov. Rick Perry of Texas. Their appeal to Tea Partiers lies less in what they say about the budget or taxes, and more in their overt use of religious language and imagery, including Mrs. Bachmann’s lengthy prayers at campaign stops and Mr. Perry’s prayer rally in Houston.

Do you remember the first bill the Republicans introduced this year in the House? It was an anti-abortion bill that attempted to redefine rape to only allow forcible rape to be defined as rape. Beside blocking the debit limit increase, the majority of bills introduced by the House Republicans dealt with social issues, abortion, same sex marriage, to cut Planned Parenthood from the Federal Budget, cuts to Head Start and WIC, and cuts to Meals on Wheels. But nothing to create jobs.

All the leading Republican candidates have signed a marriage pledge to “defend” marriage, included in that pledge is a promise to set up a McCarthyism type presidential commission to “…investigate harassment of traditional marriage supporters,” and to have a litmus test for federal judges, “Appoint judges and an attorney general who will respect the original meaning of the Constitution”. Hmm, the last time I looked, there was nothing in the Constitution about marriage, only an amendment that required the government to treat everyone equally.

Unclear on the Concept

In a July ceremony, Minneapolis Police Chief Tim Dolan honored SWAT officers for their bravery and professionalism during a December middle-of-the-night raid of a house that supposedly contained a gang's guns. However, it was the wrong house, and the bewildered, frightened resident started shooting back. Said Dolan, "The easy decision would have been to retreat (but the) team did not take the easy way out." The house got riddled with bullets, but no one was hit, and the chief later apologized but still felt that it was "a perfect example of a situation that could have gone horribly wrong, but did not because of the (team's) professionalism." Teenager finds bat asleep in bra

A teenager who thought movement in her underwear was caused by her vibrating mobile phone found a bat curled up asleep in her bra.

Abbie Hawkins, 19, of Norwich, had been wearing the bra for five hours when she plucked up the courage to investigate.

When she did, she found a baby bat in padding in her 34FF bra. The hotel receptionist said she was shocked but felt bad for removing the "cuddly" bat. "It looked cosy and comfortable and I was sorry for disturbing it," she said.

She was sitting at her desk at work when she decided to investigate the strange movements in her underwear.

"I put my hand down my bra and pulled out a cuddly little bat.

"I did not notice anything as I put my bra on. The night before I had had one or two drinks and I was getting ready quickly.

"When I was driving to work, I felt a slight vibration but I thought it was just my mobile phone in my jacket pocket."

The bat was captured by one of her colleagues and released.

LIMA (AFP) - Villagers in southern Peru were struck by a mysterious illness after a meteorite made a fiery crash to Earth in their area, regional authorities said Monday.

Around midday Saturday, villagers were startled by an explosion and a fireball that many were convinced was an airplane crashing near their remote village, located in the high Andes department of Puno in the Desaguadero region, near the border with Bolivia.

Residents complained of headaches and vomiting brought on by a "strange odor," local health department official Jorge Lopez told Peruvian radio RPP.

Seven policemen who went to check on the reports also became ill and had to be given oxygen before being hospitalized, Lopez said.

Rescue teams and experts were dispatched to the scene, where the meteorite left a 100-foot-wide (30-meter-wide) and 20-foot-deep (six-meter-deep) crater, said local official Marco Limache.

"Boiling water started coming out of the crater and particles of rock and cinders were found nearby. Residents are very concerned," he said.
