 Trailblazing feminist icon Gloria Steinem died at her New York City home on Wednesday, per a statement on her social media. As many of her obituaries will attest, Steinem publicly challenged gender stereotypes in the earliest days of her journalism and activism careers, dating back to the 1960s.

Though her legacy of feminist activism also included a hefty amount of advocacy on behalf of transgender people, that was not always the case. Steinem’s earliest known writing on trans people, from a February 1977 issue of Ms., the magazine which she co-founded a few years earlier, waded into the debate on transgender athletes — which, yes, was happening half a century ago. The article, “If the Shoe Doesn’t Fit, Change the Foot,” concerns Renée Richards, a tennis player who had transitioned in the 1970s. In the article, Steinem wrote that “we ought to be very, very suspicious of the social reasons for transsexuality as well as its big, star-spangled, commercial exploitation.”

Year, Steinem voiced support for some of the core tenets of Janice Raymond’s infamous 1979 book, The Transsexual Empire, which is considered a defining work of trans-exclusionary radical feminism. In a 2012 interview for Vassar College, Steinem referenced the book, saying, “Doctors were really profiting off this surgery and especially hormonal treatments. Hormonal treatments, in general, whether for fertility or for gender purposes, nobody knows whether they’re dangerous or not. And that’s a worry. I just think our choices need to be informed.”

Gloria Steinem, the journalist and organizer who became one of the most recognizable figures in American feminism and a longtime supporter of LGBTQ+ equality, has died. She was 92.

Steinem’s support for gay and lesbian people was visible early in the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. Time reported in 1977 that gay activists persuaded her to travel to Miami as they fought Anita Bryant’s campaign to repeal Dade County’s ordinance prohibiting discrimination against gay people. Speaking later that year at an American Association of University Women convention, Steinem said lesbians were “the most vulnerable group of women” and argued that the word lesbian had to become “as honorable as any other.”

Steinem was among the prominent supporters of the Human Rights Campaign Fund in its early years.

 But she was back then anti-trans. But in an Advocate article from 2013 she writes,

 Such stories led me to write a 1977 essay reminding us that, in addition to supporting informed choices like those of Jan Morris, Renee Richards, and others in the news at the time, we also needed to change society to fit individuals. It asked the question: If the shoe doesn't fit, must we change the foot?

Years passed the Internet arrived, and words circulated out of time and context. Last year one young transgender student on campus assumed that old essay's use of the word "mutilate" for surgeries performed because of societal pressure meant I was against sexual reassignment surgery altogether. He didn't consider that it had been written two generations before he was born, and also in the context of global protests against routine surgical assaults, called female genital mutilation by some survivors.

So now I want to be unequivocal in my words: I believe that transgender people, including those who have transitioned, are living out real, authentic lives. Those lives should be celebrated, not questioned. Their health care decisions should be theirs and theirs alone to make. And what I wrote decades ago does not reflect what we know today as we move away from only the binary boxes of "masculine" or "feminine" and begin to live along the full human continuum of identity and expression.

Six people were arrested on trespassing charges Friday afternoon at the Idaho State Capitol while protesting the state’s newly signed bathroom law. Idaho State Police confirmed that law enforcement responded to a report of a disturbance inside the building Friday afternoon. Shortly thereafter, troopers arrested six of the 12 people demonstrating against House Bill 752, which criminalizes people using public toilets that don’t align with their sex assigned at birth.

This is the second protest over the law in the Capitol that has ended in arrests. On Wednesday, nine people taking part in a sit-in protest inside Gov. Brad Little’s office were arrested when they refused Idaho State Police requests to leave the Capitol after public business hours.

According to a recent news release from ISP, the demonstrators were using whistles and bullhorns, then gathered in a bathroom. ISP states that troopers gave several warnings, and the group refused to leave when instructed.]

I can think of other powerful ways to protest, taking a cue from the Civil Rights lunch counter sit-ins. We could send one trans woman at a time to be arrested, forcing the state to tie up its resources and assign officers to a literal "bathroom police" force.

Furthermore, we need our trans brothers to do the same. Imagine the irony of a trans man—who the state insists is "female"—being arrested for using the women’s bathroom. If they get arrested, we sue for false arrest and highlight the utter absurdity of these laws.

We also need our gender-nonconforming and masculine-presenting cisgender allies to join us. When they are inevitably swept up in this "gender policing" and arrested, they too can sue for the violation of their rights.

We cannot do this by ourselves. We need our allies to stand with us in the line of fire.

Athletic icons Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird have denounced the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) new rules banning transgender and intersex women from elite competition, with soccer star Rapinoe calling the changes “hateful” and “horrible.”

Rapinoe and Bird, one of the LGBTQ+ sports world’s strongest power couples, made the comments on the April 3 episode of their shared podcast A Touch More, which they noted was recorded on Trans Day of Visibility. Near the end of the episode, Rapinoe — an Olympic gold medal soccer player and two-time World Cup winner — brought up the IOC’s recent decision to reintroduce mandatory SRY gene testing for all women athletes, which would force both trans and intersex people to compete in the male category.

“We already know that biology, as much as we want it to be just nice and clean and tight and perfectly in one category and another, it’s not. We know that,” Rapinoe said. “So now what we’re doing is subjecting everybody, all women and all people who are identifying as women, to this really invasive testing that only to me just says like, ‘Oh, so we’re just trying to whittle it down to a certain type of woman.’ Is that what we’re doing? That’s really the whole game here.”

When we speak up, we are often accused of having "an axe to grind," but when allies speak up, they speak from the heart. I recently shared with Gemini that I have "always believed in the power of allies," and the response underscored why that belief holds so much weight:

1. Shifting the Burden

As a trans woman, you shouldn't always have to be the one "explaining" or defending your existence. A true ally takes on that labor. They use their social capital to correct misinformation or challenge transphobia in rooms where you might not feel safe or interested in doing so.

2. Amplifying the Message

Sometimes, unfortunately, people who are closed off to our lived experiences are more willing to listen to someone they perceive as "like them." Allies act as a bridge, translating our needs and rights into a language that can penetrate circles of indifference or hostility.

3. Emotional Safety Nets

Beyond the political and social aspects, allies provide the "soft" power of affirmation. Knowing you have people in your corner who see you, validate you, and aren't afraid to say "I've got your back" provides the emotional fuel needed to navigate a world that can often feel draining.

4. The Power of "From the Heart"

When an ally speaks from the heart, they are essentially saying: "This doesn't affect me personally, yet I am still outraged/moved/concerned because I value the person being hurt."

When the non-discrimination bill was being heard, our supporters had the most sway. We must continue to cultivate our allies.

On Feb. 21, the actor took to the social media platform to share a pro-trans quote that said, "A world without trans people has never existed and never will."

In the comments, Pascal's followers were divided between those supporting the actor and others who said they were "unfollowing" him because of his post.

Pascal, in a pinned comment of his own, doubled down on the sentiments shared in his post.

 

 "I can’t think of anything more vile and small and pathetic than terrorizing the smallest, most vulnerable community of people who want nothing from you, except the right to exist," he wrote.

He speaks the truth! We are only somewhere around 0.5% of the population! But the way Trump & Company talk you would think that we are taking about half the population!

More than 400 civil rights groups call on Congress to reject transgender athlete ban

More than 400 LGBTQ and civil rights groups on Monday urged lawmakers to reject legislation that would bar transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports, claiming the measure, which the House is expected to consider this week, “would harm women and girls and undermine civil rights for all students.” 

The letter, led by the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, an umbrella group of U.S. civil rights organizations, argues that preventing transgender and gender-nonconforming youths from participating in school sports nationwide will further isolate and stigmatize an already vulnerable population. 

“If schools mark some students effectively as outcasts, they foster an environment where no student is included and safe,” the letter states.

Our allies will make a difference, when we talk we have an “ax to grind” but allies speak from the heart. The Republicans have already begun the attack with new anti-trans legislation.

Opponents of similar laws passed in more than two dozen states say such restrictions will inevitably fuel speculation about whether female athletes look feminine enough to compete in women’s sports without having their gender questioned.

So what they are really saying… that only trans women who don’t pass will be questioned! Those who don’t look trans will have no problem but only those look masculine will be challenged even cis women. Can you imagine what it will like for cis-women to be questioned all the time?

Opponents of similar laws passed in more than two dozen states say such restrictions will inevitably fuel speculation about whether female athletes look feminine enough to compete in women’s sports without having their gender questioned. 

A former Utah state school board member was censured last year after she falsely suggested in a Facebook post that a 16-year-old student-athlete in her district is transgender, resulting in a wave of online threats to the student’s social media accounts. 

To the Republicans, she’s only collateral damage on the quest to eradicate us.

In October, an Oregon school district requested that Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-Texas) campaign take down two ads targeting transgender athletes because they included a photograph of two minor girls who are not transgender and whose parents did not give the Cruz campaign permission to use the photo. 

We need allies to speak up! As one meme said…

It is time for the news media to speak the truth and not kowtow to Trump in fear of lawsuits. We need the clergy to speak up, our gay brothers and sisters need to speak up, and we need our allies to speak up.

The most uncancellable person in US History — iconic American singer, songwriter and actress, Dolly Parton — has been caught in the crosshairs of cancel culture.

The country legend, also affectionately known as “The iron butterfly,” “The Smoky Mountain songbird” and “The backwoods Barbie,” among other priceless nicknames, has a blockbuster career that spans more than half a century and boasts more than 100 million records sold globally. Parton is, by all accounts, the top female country music singer of all time.

Conservative writer Ericka Andersen wrote earlier this month in the Federalist that Parton’s support of the LGBTQ community was “false gospel.” Andersen specifically said that Parton’s invoking her Christianity as the reason she is inclusive, is wrong (the writer refers to being LGBTQ as “immoral sexual behavior” and “unaligned with God’s vision for humanity”).

The post caused a windfall of right-wing vitriol aimed at Parton. Many people rallied behind the homophobic outcry while a huge contingent defended Parton. (“They came for Dolly. We ride at dawn,” one fan wrote.)

You know that this whole feign outrage is showing the truth about the conservatives that they attack a beloved person because she love everyone and doesn’t hate anyone.

Parton has long supported the LGBTQ community. She has not been afraid to stand on the stage at LGBTQ events and share that we ought to stop judging and love everyone. She has also risen above the catfighting that country music artists often spew in their lyrics and backstage and instead, shared something distinct — kindness. Her top hit, “Jolene,” is so kind in its portrayal of another woman, that academics have analyzed it as an encoded lesbian song.

It was inevitable that Republicans would go after Dolly Parton. Under the leadership of Donald "Make America Great Again" Trump, Republicans have grown to loathe most everything they used to hold in high regard. Forget patriotism — nowadays, Trump rallies are replete with claims that the United States is a "s__thole." The Super Bowl is now derided as an "election interference psyop." Once-beloved Budweiser beer has become a hate object. The same conservative forces who used to pretend they were defending American icons like Dr. Seuss and Mr. Potato Head from imaginary "cancelation" are now mostly in the business of canceling anything and everything that Americans might enjoy.

Edward R. Murrow asked once of Sen McCarthy “Have you no sense of decency.”  the HuffPost wrote,

On March 9th, 1954, Murrow—who was then perhaps the country's most highly revered journalist—devoted an entire episode of his CBS program "See it Now" to the words and deeds of Senator Joseph McCarthy, who had already done much to earn his notorious place in history. Using McCarthy's own statements, Murrow painted a picture of a man whose recklessness with the truth and ugly attacks on his critics had contributed to a climate of deep fear and repression in American life.

And now they are attacking country singing legend Dolly Parton. Will this be an Edward R. Murrow moment?

Pope Francis has blasted the “backwardness” of some conservatives in the U.S. Catholic Church, saying they have replaced faith with ideology and that a correct understanding of Catholic doctrine allows for change over time.

Francis’ comments were an acknowledgment of the divisions in the U.S. Catholic Church, which has been split between progressives and conservatives who long found support in the doctrinaire papacies of St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI, particularly on issues of abortion and same-sex marriage.

Many conservatives have blasted Francis’ emphasis instead on social justice issues such as the environment and the poor, while also branding as heretical his opening to letting divorced and civilly remarried Catholics receive the sacraments.

The 86-year-old Argentine acknowledged his point, saying there was “a very strong, organized, reactionary attitude” in the U.S. church, which he called “backward.” He warned that such an attitude leads to a climate of closure, which was erroneous.

“Doing this, you lose the true tradition and you turn to ideologies to have support. In other words, ideologies replace faith,” he said.

When I was going to catechism class we were taught that the Pope’s word was God and if you didn’t obey it you were going straight to hell!

Francis has previously acknowledged the criticism directed at him from some U.S. conservatives, once quipping that it was an “honor” to be attacked by Americans.

The NBA Hall of Famer and TNT  (WBD) - Get Free Report analyst once again showed his support for the LGBTQ+ community, this time amid the Bud Light  (BUDFF)  controversy. Bud Light has been attacked by the right for partnering with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney in April.

Barkley’s outspoken support for the LGBTQ+ community has gone on for over a decade, including saying he was comfortable playing with gay teammates in the past. He also showed support of the NBA pulling the 2016 All-Star Game from Charlotte due to North Carolina’s controversial bathroom bill.

New Jersey’s attorney general files civil rights complaints against three school districts alleging discrimination against LGBTQ+ students

Just days after three New Jersey public school systems simultaneously enacted policies requiring educators to notify parents of changes in their children’s gender identity, the state is pursuing legal action.

New Jersey State Attorney General Matthew Platkin announced the complaints against the Middletown Township, Marlboro Township and Manalapan-Englishtown Regional boards of education, all in Monmouth County.

In a series of complaints filed in a New Jersey Superior Court, the state alleges policies requiring staff to notify parents when students express desire to change names, pronouns or bathroom and/or locker accommodations “target transgender, gender non-conforming, and gender non-binary students by singling them out for differential treatment, requiring parental notification for those students but not their peers.”

“In New Jersey, we will not tolerate any action by schools that threatens the health and safety of our young people. Without question, the discriminatory policies passed by these Boards of Education, if allowed to go into effect, will harm our kids and pose severe risk to their safety,” said Attorney General Platkin in a statement. “Simply put, these policies violate our laws, and we will not relent in protecting our LGBTQ+ community – especially our children – from discrimination.”

There is going to be a long state court battle over this...

In May, state officials also filed a civil rights complaint after similar changes were enacted at the Hanover Township Board of Education.

The litigation challenging that policy remains pending. A Superior Court, however, issued a temporary restraining order barring that board of education from enforcing that policy while it considers the matter.

Meanwhile down in the Red states they are forcing teachers to squeal on their students even if it does harm to the child.

In another example of the differences… In a email from my Congressional representative, 

I’m proud Connecticut has led the way to protect bodily autonomy, becoming the first state in the nation to protect a woman’s right to an abortion under state law when I served as President pro tempore of the State Senate.  

Unfortunately, millions of Americans have been denied those same protections over the last year, with 15 states outlawing abortion since the Court’s ruling. Extreme proposals that I oppose to restrict access to reproductive health care at the federal level are moving through Congress – there’s even a measure to prevent pregnant veterans from receiving life-saving care.  

These efforts to punish women and their doctors for seeking the care they need have no place in our country. That’s why I signed on to a discharge petition this week that would force a vote on the House floor to reinstate the federal right to abortion access.

And notice the phrasing “protect bodily autonomy” that includes us!

For the first time in its nearly 50-year history, all major Denver pro sports team will march for LGBTQ+ rights during Denver PrideFest this weekend.

The announcement from the Center on Colfax, however, does not mean that any players from any of the teams will be marching this Sunday.

Contingents from the NBA champions Denver Nuggets, the Denver Broncos, the Colorado Rockies, the Colorado Avalanche, the Colorado Rapids and the Colorado Mammoth will join the hundreds of thousands of people that will be marching for equality during the Denver Pride parade on Sunday.

Among the contingents will be Supermascot Rocky, Denver Nuggets dancers, Skyline Drum Squad and the Mile High City Hype Squad; the Denver Broncos cheerleaders and Miles the Mascot; the Colorado Rockies mascot Dinger; the Colorado Avalanche Ice Patrol, Bernie the Mascot and The Celly Squad; the Colorado Mammoth Wild Bunch and Wooly the Mascot, and RapidMan, the Mascot from the Colorado Rapids.

Many of Chicago’s teams came together to show their support at the city’s Pride Parade on Sunday. That included appearances from team owners to fan-favorite mascots.

Benny the Bull is one of the most recognizable, if not the singular most famous mascot in the world. So it’s no surprise that his appearance in a rainbow afro wig drew cheers from the crowd. Tough act to follow for the folks wearing Bulls shirts in the float behind Benny's.

Not to be outdone, White Sox mascot Southpaw opted to celebrate Pride shirtless. He also showed off some impressive dance moves.

No cops at Pride, only a motorcycle gang of butches. 

As has been the case at many such events over the past year, roughly two dozen anti-drag protestors showed up at the Middlesex County Library in the small, rural town of Parkhill, Ontario on April 29, according to CTV News. They were there to protest a drag queen story hour. But they were met with self-proclaimed protectors, all affiliated with the all-women motorcycle club the WindSisters, who linked arms to form a chain at the entrance and helped escort patrons safely inside.

The event was put on by the Rainbow Optimists, a southern Ontario LGBTQ+ youth advocacy group focusing on rural communities, and Strathoy Pride, which organizes pride events in Middlesex County, the primarily rural municipality in which Parkhill is located. It was the first drag queen storytime event at the library since 2019 and the first with so many protesters, according to comments that Lindsay Brock, Middlesex County’s director of library services, made to the Canadian news outlet CBC.

Accordingly, 70-year-old Patricia Ginn, a member of the WindSisters, told CTV that “Historically, a butch — like myself, and I’ve been one for 50 years now — our role in the community has always been one of the great protector.”

“They were in our face, pushing and shoving, screaming, calling us everything they could think of,” Ginn said. “They actually went up to several members who were walking in with their children and called them pedophiles.”

Thank you, thank you, thank you for standing by us. Thank you for being an ally.

Who Has Our Backs?

I was surprised to find out who did, at first I was surprised but then I could see it. Yeah, he would stand up for us.

Howard Stern and Rosie O’Donnell are showing their support for Dylan Mulvaney, the transgender social media star who has been at the center of conservative backlash following her partnership with Bud Light. Mulvaney announced in an April 1 Instagram video that she was teaming up with Bud Light for a fan contest, while also revealing the company made her a one-time only specialized can with her face on it. An alleged leak of a Bud Light gay pride can also hit social media around the same time.

Howard Stern expressed disbelief over Rock and Tritt’s reactions during the April 10 episode of his SiriusXM radio show (via Billboard). “I thought there must be a piece of this story that I’m missing,” the radio host said. “I’m not bothered by gay people or [transgender] people. They don’t impact my life, they don’t hurt my life. I love when people are in love. You wanna be a woman? Be a woman. You wanna be a dude, be a dude. Be whatever you fucking want. As long as you ain’t hurting anybody, I’m on your team.”

“I wish I could call Kid Rock and have him come on the show and just tell me, ‘Why are you so upset about this? How is it hurtful?’ I don’t know why he got so upset,” Stern continued. “Kid Rock, I know him. He’s got a great life. He transitioned from some kid in Michigan to a rock superstar! I’m really dumbfounded by why someone would care so much that they would blow up a can of Bud Light and say, ‘Fuck Anheuser-Busch.’ I don’t get it.”

He got that right, we are not bothering anyone, we are just trying to survive just like everyone else.

Stern observed that many of Kid Rock’s songs are all about “doing my thing and fuck you if you’re not with me,” so he found it ironic that the singer would get so upset about Bud Light and Dylan Mulvaney teaming up. In other words, just let them do their thing.

Have you noticed they talk about “freedom” and “rights” but it is only their “freedom” and “rights” not anyone else’s. It is is just like they say “parental rights” but these oppress other parent's rights.

On the Rosie O’Donnell show Dylan Mulvaney said,

“I have tried to be the most uncontroversial person this past year and somehow it has made me controversial still,” Mulvaney told O’Donnell during the conversation. “I think it comes back to the fact that these people, they don’t understand me and anything that I do or say then somehow gets taken out of context and is used against me. It’s so sad because everything I try to put out is positive, it’s trying to connect with others that maybe don’t understand me, it’s to make people laugh or make a kid feel seen.”

Bingo!

Lizzo and Madonna have both taken stances in calling out the recent rash of anti-LGBTQ bills like the Tennessee drag ban and laws aimed at trans healthcare.

Earlier this month, Lizzo shared a series of tweets about getting to the root of the hate. “I’ve never heard a person say why they’re racist… Or fatphobic.. I’ve never heard a reason why someone is transphobic.. I think if we knew ‘why’ these people felt this way there would way less support for these ideals. Because the ‘why’ is more insidious than we realize,” she wrote before adding later: “Don’t get it twisted— I don’t care why people are bigoted. That’s a waste of my imagination. I feel like there’s a lot of complicit silence and apathetic participation going on that wouldn’t fly if people knew more.”

“The oppression of the LGBTQ+ is not only unacceptable and inhumane; it’s creating an unsafe environment; it makes America a dangerous place for our most vulnerable citizens, especially trans women of color,” Madonna said in a statement. “Also, these so-called laws to protect our children are unfounded and pathetic. Anyone with half a brain knows not to fuck with a drag queen. Bob and I will see you from the stage in Nashville where we will celebrate the beauty that is the queer community.”

Visibility!

That is the key, the more people know someone who is trans the more they will understand and not believe the conservative lies. The Republican legislators know what they are doing, they know it will hurt children. They heard testimony from all the medical associations in the US but instead they decided to listen to the quakes.

Country star Reba McEntire chimed in a few weeks later, too, when asked about the anti-drag bill during an interview with the Los Angeles Times. McEntire said she was “disappointed” that the bill past, adding, “I wish they would spend that much time and energy and money on feeding the homeless children in those two counties.”

When asked potentially alienating segments of her audience, McEntire quipped, “I mean, we’ve got a real problem in this country, and to be worrying about men wanting to dress up as women? God bless ’em to wear those high heels — I feel for ’em. But let’s center our attention on something that really needs attention.”

Allies, we need allies to speak out! They are speaking from the heart. On last Friday the Transgender flag flew over the state capitol here in Connecticut. Meanwhile down south and the mid-west they are making it crime to be trans.

There are reports of families with LGBTQ+ children fleeing north while at the same time conservatives are flocking south and forming enclaves of gated White bastions.

Is this the future of our country? To be segregated along culture, racial, and religious lines?

Will we be seeing books like the “Green Book” and the “Peeing in Peace” come back in vogue?

Back in 1978 at the height of the Lavender Scare and the Anita Bryant's Save Our Children campaign, Harvey Milk made his famous speech after winning Proposition 6 and he said…

Gay brothers and sisters,... You must come out. Come out... to your parents... Come out to your relatives... come out to your friends...  Come out to your neighbors... to your fellow workers... to the people who work where you eat and shop... come out only to the people you know, and who know you. 

He knew back then that visibility was the key!

How do we counter the rise in bias crimes, there is no simple quick fix and there is no one answer but instead it is Senator Clinton said, “it takes a village.” We have to speak up and speak out. We need our neighbors to speak up. 

When you know someone it is much harder to hate them, when you know someone it is much easier to stand beside them. We need everyone to speak up against violence and discrimination.

The B-52’s also took aim at the laws targeting trans healthcare. “We, The B-52’s, are deeply concerned about the numerous new bills that promote transphobia and discrimination against transgender individuals and drag artists, which have been introduced in the United States,” the band wrote on Twitter Wednesday.

Nashville’s own Hayley Williams of Paramore previously wrote of the Tennessee laws aimed at the LGBTQ+ community, “Once again our state has passed two regressive and unfathomably harmful bills. We stand in solidarity with our LGBTQIA+ family and local LGBTQIA+ orgs in this fight, not only for inclusion for our friends and family in the queer community, but for radical acceptance and empowerment for each of them. Drag is not a crime. Gender-affirming healthcare for all, including our youth, is a necessity.”

People are realizing that they can’t keep silent that they must speak out.

There is a more to being an ally then saying you are… an ally stands with us and by us. It is great that your are an ally, but when you hear mean, do you speak up? Daniel Radcliffe had this to say at a Trevor Project's Sharing Space series of roundtable discussions.

Daniel Radcliffe has long been an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ rights — but he's still hesitant to call himself an ally.

"I said this to you all earlier, about my weird little problems with the word 'ally,' just because anytime you hear somebody self-refer to themself as an ally, I'm always like, 'I'm suspicious of you,'" Radcliffe admits. "But there is an original meaning to that word, and there [are] some people who embody that very powerfully."

Mateo-Luis, one of the six panelists joining Radcliffe, notes, "Sometimes it takes for someone to really step into what we would consider allyship, for someone to understand what it's like to live in your shoes. Because a lot of times we don't live in anyone else's shoes and we only think about what it's like in ours."

Radcliffe has been a longtime supporter of the Trevor Project, whose mission is to end suicide among LGBTQ young people. With Sharing Space, the organization says it is seeking to "provide a much-needed platform for young trans and nonbinary voices to share about their personal journeys and explore what genuine allyship looks like among curious, open-minded adults and allies."

It is great that you are an ally, but it is not a 9 to 5 job. Daniel Radcliffe know that.

During a time of unprecedented attacks against the transgender community and with today's celebration of Trans Day of Visibility, cisgender allies must step up and use our privilege to speak out and act up.

Cisgender people — those of us whose sex assigned at birth is congruent with our gender identity — often have the option to remain silent when we see legislation targeting our trans siblings or when we hear about the murder of another trans person, particularly another trans person of color.

There are even people— often referred to as trans exclusionary radical feminists or TERFs — who argue that trans women are really just men.

Let’s be clear, transgender women are women and transgender men are men. Hard stop.

In fact, with the larger attacks on the queer community, it might be easier to not be involved and stay silent. But our trans siblings need us now more than ever. They need us to disrupt transphobia. They need us to challenge trans the exclusionary radical feminists arguments.

They need us to amplify their voices. They need us to listen and follow their lead as they act in their own best interests.

We need you to “amplify our voices,” Hillary Clinton was right “it takes a village” to silence the misanthropes and forced them back in the swamp and into silence.

How to be an allies for trans Ohioans?

• So, you’re a cisgender person and you want to speak up and act out with the transgender community? Where can you start?
• First, speak out whether in public, at demonstrations, or on social media. Let people know that you support your trans siblings.
• Share content from trans creators and trans rights organizations. Check out TransOhio, the ACLU of Ohio’s Trans Spotlight, the March for Queer and Trans Youth Autonomy, and the “This is Trans” Project currently on display at Studio West 117 in Cleveland (among many other trans rights organizations and projects).
• Support trans-owned small businesses and transgender creators (my photo in this piece was taken by the trans-owned Mx. Gay Photography).
• Whatever you do, remember as the community with privilege, cisgender people must follow the lead of and prioritize the agency of transgender people to act in their own best interests.

It’s not enough to love our trans family and friends behind closed doors.

“Telling me you love me in private is not enough. Anything less is a detriment to my survival. Your silence is just another nail,” said J.D. Melendez, a friend who is transgender, on social media recently.

If you say you are an ally, then you can’t merely be a bystander. You must speak up. There has never been a more critical time to be vocal in support of trans rights and against the attacks on the minds and hearts and bodies of our trans friends and family. Allies must combat disinformation when they see or hear it — on social media, around dinner tables or at water cooler conversations at work. Those who purport to care about trans people or about freedom of expression must contact legislators who are peddling these draconian anti-trans bills and tell them to stop. Allies need to validate trans lives to their parents and children and create dialogue that makes space for gender expansiveness and beats back at the policing of gender.

Being an ally isn’t passive (But we welcome you if you can be an active supporter.).

For those who aim to restrict trans rights, it’s easier to stand up at a school board meeting and condemn an invisible person who you don’t share a dinner table with — or a classroom or a playground. It’s easier to legislate against people you have never met. So long as trans people remain hypothetical, it will be harder to help people understand their humanity and their critical need for safety and equal access to basic civic life.

It is not easy being an ally, you get shit thrown at you just like us. It takes courage! Because those who hold animosity against us don’t want you to speak out, you become a… “Trannie lover.” 

Trans people and drag queens aren’t the problem. And blustery politicians who would rather throw their most vulnerable constituents under the bus than get to work are most definitely not part of the solution. As allies, people who aren’t trans can help — and remember, our trans friends and family are listening.

Remember only you can prevent hate.

When the CMT Music Awards announced that country star Kelsea Ballerini would be hosting this year’s ceremony, no one had a reason to believe that viewers would be in for anything that wasn’t par for the course. Ballerini has hosted the show for the past two years. She’s a staple in the modern country music scene, and in a genre that has largely been a bastion from polarizing social commentary, she’s become a relatively safe choice for these kinds of gigs.

But after Sunday night’s ceremony, Ballerini is decidedly off the “safe list.” In a one, two punch, Ballerini called for gun reform in front of country music’s biggest stars and then later performed alongside drag queens amid a slew of anti-drag legislation sweeping across the country. It’s the kind of move that leaves some country fans livid, declaring Ballerini as some kind of “woke” traitor of the genre. Truth is? Last night was the most country Kelsea Ballerini has ever been.

During the opening monologue at Sunday night’s CMT Music Awards, broadcast from Austin on CBS, there was a comedic bit in which Kelsea Ballerini and Kane Brown exchanged anniversary presents to celebrate their cohosting of the show for the third consecutive time. Brown gave Ballerini a cowboy hat, and she reciprocated by giving him a pink hat to put on in return. At least a few audience members shared a joke about the exchange: By wearing pink, would Brown be breaking Tennessee’s recently passed law that some believe would ban most drag performances in the state, if they were back home?

The choreography and design offered the biggest splashes of color in a night already filled with colorful costuming and production elements. The performance read nearly as a salute to “Hairspray,” with the four veterans of RuPaul’s camp — Jan Sport, Olivia Lux, Manila Luzon and Kennedy Davenport — decked out in dresses redolent of the early ’60s, complementing Ballerini as she eventually shed layers to get down to what looked like 1960s swimwear.

Kentucky’s Democratic governor issued an election-year veto Friday of a sweeping Republican bill aimed at regulating the lives of transgender youths that includes banning access to gender-affirming health care and restricting the bathrooms they can use.

The bill also bans discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity in schools and allows teachers to refuse to refer to transgender students by the pronouns they use. It easily passed the GOP-dominated legislature with veto-proof margins, and lawmakers will reconvene next week for the final two days of this year’s session, when they could vote to override the veto.

Gov. Andy Beshear said in a written veto message that the bill allows “too much government interference in personal healthcare issues and rips away the freedom of parents to make medical decisions for their children.”

Republican lawmakers in Kentucky on Wednesday swept aside the Democratic governor’s veto of a bill regulating some of the most personal aspects of life for transgender young people — from banning access to gender-affirming health care to restricting the bathrooms they can use.

The votes to override Gov. Andy Beshear’s veto were lopsided in both legislative chambers — where the GOP wields supermajorities — and came on the next-to-last day of this year’s legislative session.

The debate is likely to spill over into this year’s gubernatorial campaign in Kentucky and could reach the courts if opponents follow through on a threat to mount a legal challenge against the bill.

Activists on both sides of the impassioned debate gathered at the statehouse to make competing appeals shortly before lawmakers took up the transgender bill.

Jon Stewart took Oklahoma State Sen. Nathan Dahm to task for pursuing anti-drag legislation “to protect children,” while simultaneously supporting looser gun restrictions.

In a now-viral clip from the latest episode of Apple TV+’s The Problem With Jon Stewart, the host confronted the Republican politician about his pro-gun stance. 

After Dahm argued that laws requiring people to register their guns infringe on a person’s right to bear arms, Stewart said, “Even rights have responsibilities.”

The talk show host then pivoted to Dahm and the general Right’s obsession with “protecting” children from drag performers, despite the fact that guns became the number one cause of death of children in the United States in 2022. 

“Are you infringing on that [drag] performer’s free speech?” Stewart asked.

“They can continue to exercise their free speech,” Dahm replied. “Just not in front of a child.” When Stewart pushed him as to why, Dahm continued, “Because the government does have a responsibility… in certain instances, to protect children.”

“What’s the leading cause of death amongst children in this country?” Stewart fired back. “I’m going to give you a hint: It’s not drag show readings to children.”

Our allies need to speak up and hold the Republicans’ feet to the fire and hold them accountable for their lies!

Unfortunately, the fact that Stewart sticks to the facts when it comes to LGBTQ+ issues like anti-drag legislation and bills targeting trans youth while almost every major newspaper has failed to do the same speaks volumes about the state of reporting on these issues — and the very real dangers that queer and trans people face when media outlets give people a platform to spread disinformation while not providing proper context and data.

Our media outlets are being bought up mega billionaires and look out for their money and not the truth. They no longer has ties to the community just to their pocketbooks.

Lesbian soccer star Megan Rapinoe has dedicated her honor as one of Time’s 12 Women of the Year to the transgender community.

“I am only here because of them,” Rapinoe said at Thursday’s Women of the Year gala, held at the Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills, Timereports. “We all know what’s going on in our country with the attempted erasure of trans people.”

Many of the latter are aimed specifically at trans females and are often presented under the disingenuous guise of “saving women’s sports,” but Rapinoe, one of the most prominent cisgender women in sports, made clear that she’s a supporter of trans inclusion in all aspects of life.

“White women have left Black women — and everyone else — behind,” she said. “Straight women leave queer women behind.”

“Let’s not be those kinds of people,” she added. “Being a woman: Make it expansive. Don’t ever leave anybody behind. … Let’s bring everyone in and figure the rest out from there.”

One state senator is holding up business in the Nebraska Legislature in protest of a bill that would ban gender-affirming care for transgender youth.

Sen. Machaela Cavanaugh, a Democrat from Omaha, has vowed to keep up a filibuster in the one-chamber legislature to stop the bill from passing. She began it Thursday night in the old-fashioned way, speaking as long as possible. “Cavanaugh promised to take every single bill to cloture, meaning hours of debate on every single bill that comes to the floor,” according to TV station WOWT.

“If this legislature collectively decides that legislating hate against children is our priority, then I am going to make it painful, painful for everyone,” Cavanaugh said in a meeting Thursday that was recorded by local news outlets, NBC News reports. “If you want to inflict pain upon our children, I am going to inflict pain upon this body, and I have nothing but time, and I am going to use all of it.” She further vowed, “I will burn the session to the ground over this bill.”

The Republicans say it is to protect the children but it isn’t it is all about getting reelected.

Republican Sen. Kathleen Kauth, who introduced the legislation, LB 574, said it’s needed to keep minors from doing something they may regret. “These children need therapy to deal with the coexisting mental and emotional struggles they are experiencing — not irreversible, harmful and experimental medical procedures,” she said in a recent statement.

Kauth has also claimed Sweden and Finland have adopted similar bans, but that’s not true. “Medical bodies in both countries don’t recommend surgeries for minors and have recently issued more restrictive guidance on puberty blockers and hormone therapy, but both still allow minors to receive the treatment if they meet a list of criteria or are involved in a research study on the effects of the care,” NBC News reports.

Lie, lies, and more lies. That is the Republican way, they follow Joseph Goebbels rule that “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.”

Cavanaugh, who happens to be a straight cisgender woman, has been filibustering a property tax bill, not because she opposes it, but to keep the anti-trans bill from coming up. Last week another lawmaker proposed a compromise in which the legislature would simply skip over LB 574, and Cavanaugh agreed to it, but the Republican-dominated body voted it down.

Tennessee’s aggressive legislative moves against drag performances have prompted a host of pro-LGBTQ artists from different genres to come together for a March 20 benefit concert at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, dubbed “Love Rising,” that will raise funds for the Tennessee Equality Project and several other local pride organizations.

Among those taking part in the Bridgestone show are Maren Morris and Brothers Osborne, two artists that have spoken up about LGBTQ issues in the often quiet mainstream country world. Others on the bill from the rock, pop, Americana and alternative realms include Paramore’s Haylee Williams, Sheryl Crow, Jason Isbell, Amanda Shires, Allison Russell, Yola, Brittany Howard and Hozier. Julien Baker, Joy Oladokun, Jake Wesley Rogers, Mya Byrne and the Rainbow Coalition Band round out the packed lineup. Other special guests are expected to be added.

Billboard had this to say,

“Equality for everybody, or nobody’s really equal,” longtime LGBTQ alley Lauper told ITK according to The Hill. “This is how Hitler started. just weeding everybody out.” Hitler’s Nazi Germany tagged gay people as “enemies of the state” and many were jailed or killed in concentration camps and Lauper said it’s imperative that we keep “fighting for civil rights.”

The band went on to say that it is, “unacceptable that in the 21st century, we are witnessing such blatant attempts to undermine the rights of individuals based on their gender identity and sexual orientation. These bills not only violate the fundamental human rights of the affected individuals but also perpetuate a toxic culture of hate and intolerance that has no place in our society.”

Documentarian Ken Burns on Tuesday said the bills that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is advocating for resemble the “Soviet system” in deciding what students are allowed to be taught in a classroom. 

Burns said during an interview on “CNN This Morning” that the “suppression” of ideas, where those ideas might lead and facts is not what makes the United States “great.” He said the country’s greatness comes from who the American people are, how they investigate who they are and how they celebrate their diversity. 

“All of these bills that DeSantis and others are doing limit our ability to understand who we are, and they are not inclusive — they are exclusive. They are narrowing the focus of what is and isn’t American history. It’s terrifying. It feels like a Soviet system or the way the Nazis would build a Potemkin village,” he said. 

Well duh! Why do you think is DeSantis is proposing these laws? It is exactly for those reasons, he wants to marginalized our community!

“By trying to dictate what teachers can and cannot teach, Florida House Bill 999 is an assault on the very liberties articulated by the Founders and something that all Americans should speak out against,” Burns tweeted.

He said DeSantis and others are reacting to issues that challenge the idea of a “neat, tidy, white picket fence” view of society. He said the world is complicated, and race is “in everything we touch.”

DeSantis is using the pogrom of animosity against us as a stepping stone to the White House. As other Republicans he doesn’t care about the bodies they he leaves by the wayside.
