KEY FACTS
  • The Texas Family Project, a conservative organization, stoked the online anger against Cracker Barrel Thursday afternoon by tweeting screenshots of its Pride and diversity, equity and inclusion statements from its website.
  • “We take no pleasure in reporting that @CrackerBarrel has fallen,” the Texas Family Project tweeted, though this phrase was quickly mocked and turned into a meme on social media.
  • Cracker Barrel also posted a picture of a rainbow-colored rocking chair outside one of its restaurants on Instagram Thursday, stating: “We are excited to celebrate Pride Month with our employees and guests.”
  • Like many other companies deemed “woke” by conservatives, criticism of Cracker Barrel spread among right-wing social media users, some of who said they’d stop supporting the restaurant.
  • Cracker Barrel’s controversy comes a week after Chick-fil-A—a fast-food chain known for its Christian affiliation (and onetime anti-LGBTQ sentiments)—attracted similar online criticism when its 2021 hiring of a DEI vice president circulated on social media.
  • The latest target of online radical conservative furor this Pride Month is Cracker Barrel, the Southern-themed restaurant chain, after it voiced generic support for Pride and diversity, equity and inclusion—a stench in the nostrils of self-appointed moral arbiters of the universe and hard-right extremists, although the company once notoriously discriminated against its LGBTQ employees before it openly supported Pride.
Gee where are the good-ol’-boys going to park their RVs?

But of course this is not new… they have been doing it for year but now the right-wingers are in a tizzy over anything LGBTQ+.
Cracker Barrel has openly supported Pride Month for several years, but in early 1991, the company adopted a policy to cease hiring LGBTQ people and fire those already employed. A company memo reportedly stated hiring those “whose sexual preference fails to demonstrate normal heterosexual values, which have been the foundation of families in our society” was incompatible with the “perceived values of our customer base.” At least nine gay employees were fired, the New York Times reported in February 1991. The policy was attacked by gay rights activists. Robert Bray, spokesman for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, said the policy was unprecedented because while other companies would try to disguise termination of gay employees, Cracker Barrel “codified and institutionalized bigotry and discrimination.” By March 1991, founder Dan Evins had apologized and said the company had gotten rid of the policy, though Cracker Barrel’s board would not vote to ban discrimination against gay employees until 2002. Cracker Barrel was given a 15 out of 100 score on the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index, a measure of LGBTQ workplace equality in 2010, though the score increased to 55 in 2011 and to 80 as of the 2022 ranking. The company had another brief LGBTQ-related controversy in 2013 when it pulled Duck Dynasty merchandise from its gift store shelves after its star Phil Robertson made anti-LGBTQ comments. Less than 48 hours later, the company returned these products to shelves in response to backlash. The company took a firmer stance in support of the LGBTQ community in 2019 when it canceled an event at one of its restaurants that would have been hosted by Grayson Fritts, a pastor who said that LGBTQ people are “worthy of death.”

What got them in dander over Cracker Barrel, Insider writes...

The restaurant chain posted a photo on its Facebook page Thursday showing a rainbow-themed rocking chair on the porch of a Cracker Barrel restaurant.

The post said: "We are excited to celebrate Pride Month with our employees and guests. Everyone is always welcome at our table (and our rocker). Happy Pride!" The company posted the same message on its Instagram page.

That is all it took! A rainbow chair and all are welcome.
Other businesses, such as Chick-fil-A, have come under fire for diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. Cracker Barrel also sparked criticism and boycott threats last year when it added vegan sausage to its menu.
You know I have to wonder who the real "snowflakes" are.

Then under “Is nothing scared anymore?”
Their new initiatives are shocking…to some.

Atlanta, Georgia-based restaurant Chick-fil-A is certainly no stranger to criticism from customers. For years, they've come under fire due to comments Chick-fil-A founder Dan Cathy made about homosexuality and donations he made to anti-LGBTQ organizations. Ironically though, as of late, the eatery has found itself being blasted online for a completely different reason: its new diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

Details surrounding the new initiatives were posted on the Chick-fil-A website in September and they've recently become a hot topic of conversation on social media.

"At Chick-fil-A, Inc., our commitment is to approach this work with intention and humility, always believing the best in one another and striving for common ground. We’re early on in our journey, but we’re honored by the opportunity to steward our organization’s greatest asset—our people—and are energized by the road ahead," a statement on the Chick-fil-A website reads.

Despite the restaurant declaring that it's "committed to being better at together," a number of people are now threatening to separate from Chick-fil-A for being too "woke."
What is a good ol’ boy going to do? No beer, no places to eat, and no place to park their RVs! These have been the staples of the far right for decades and now all of sudden they are evil “Woke” businesses

What’s and who’s next?

Wonderful comment. Aren't we glad we are "woke" instead of asleep. A closed mind is wasteful.

  2. If you're committed to the teaching of Christ check your Bible and search for what Jesus said. You will not find any words of hate towards any group. The haters need to just stay home and hunker down in their bunkers.
