Vanderbilt's transgender health clinic pauses gender-affirming surgery for minors amidst GOP pressure

Amidst a slew of pressure from the GOP, the Vanderbilt University Medical Center's transgender clinic has decided to suspend all gender-affirming surgeries for minors.

Dr. C. Wright Pinson, an executive at the Nashville, Tennessee-based health center, sent a letter to Republican lawmakers in the state confirming they would be "pausing" gender-affirming procedures in order to "review recommendations."

In a statement sent to CNN, Vanderbilt confirmed the letter was real, but would not elaborate on the new policy.

[…]

The decision to halt gender-affirming surgeries comes under a wave of criticism over the procedures, mostly from Republican politicians in GOP-led states such as Tennessee. The push for Vanderbilt to change its policy was led by Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee (R), who told The Tennessean that the university's clinic raised "serious moral, ethical and legal concerns," and added that their practices should be investigated.

Hospitals are under attack by the conservatives, they have been so relied up by the Republicans that they are threatening doctors and hospitals just like they did against abortion clinics.

Jon Stewart interviews Arkansas attorney general on anti-trans law

Jon Stewart received mountains of praise Friday for his interview with Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge, who supported state legislation denying anyone under 18 years old access to gender-affirming treatments.

Arkansas’ Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson vetoed the bill, Act 626, last year, calling it a “vast government overreach.”

But lawmakers, who dubbed the bill “Save Adolescents from Experimentation (SAFE) Act.”

The American Civil Liberties Union has sued Arkansas, and the law has been temporarily blocked.

A trial on whether to permanently block the legislation is scheduled for later this month in a federal appeals court.

Ms. Rutledge gets befuddled over question about her sources that she quoted, Pink News wrote,

The exchange escalated further when Rutledge claimed that 98 per cent of gender diverse young people stop experiencing gender dysphoria without any treatment.

“Wow, that’s an incredibly made up figure. That doesn’t comport with any of the studies or documentation that exist from these medical organisations.”

When asked where her figures had come from, Rutledge said she didn’t know “off the top of my head”.

[…]

“And so these mainstream medical organisations have developed guidelines through peer-reviewed data and studies and through those guidelines they have improved mental health outcomes.”

He continued: “So I am confused why you follow AMA guidelines… for all other health issues in Arkansas – because we checked – but not for this.”

At the end of the clip, Stewart asked Rutledge what her qualifications were to decide trans youth shouldn’t be allowed to access gender-affirming care.

When she suggested they were “irreversible” decisions, Stewart mocked her for making it sound like nine year old children can walk into doctors’ surgeries and be put on hormone treatments.

She ends with saying that she wasn’t prepared to give a Supreme Court argument with Jon Steward today. Well my dear you better get ready because you will have to tell what “professional organizations” you did listen to in the ACLU court case.
