Yup that’s right here in Connecticut you can get your electrolysis covered by insurance!
The secret is how your medical provider codes it!
The ICD 10 code is… L68!
What is the secret, well it really isn’t a secret back in 2013 the insurance commissioner published a bulletin (IC-37) that says everything a cisgender person insurance procedures covers has to be covered for a trans person.
L68 is for Hirsutism.
What the heck is Hirsutism?
The Mayo Clinic says,
Hirsutism (HUR-soot-iz-um) is a condition in women that results in excessive growth of dark or coarse hair in a male-like pattern — face, chest and back.
With hirsutism, extra hair growth often arises from excess male hormones (androgens), primarily testosterone.
Yup, we trans women sure have a lot of excess facial hair.
Since cisgender women who have excesses facial hair can get insurance coverage for it so can we.
Your medical provider must say that it is medically necessary.
There also was a case that went before the Commission on Human Rights and Opportunity, the case of… Declaratory Ruling on Petition Regarding Health Insurers’ Categorization of Certain Gender-Confirming Procedure as Cosmetic.
The Connecticut TransAdvocacy Coalition was granted intervenor status and I gave the deposition as the Executive Director… “Some have observed insurers denying hair removal services for treatment related to gender dysphoria but granting the same for a physical condition, hirsutism."
So here in Connecticut to get medical treatments covered by insurance tell your doctor to say that it is medically necessary for your wellbeing.
