Saturday 9: Mambo No. 5

On Saturdays I take a break from the heavy stuff and have some fun…

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) Lou Bega namechecks a lot of women in this song. Is there an Angela, Pamela, Sandra, Rita, Monica, Erica, Tina, Mary, or Jessica in your life?
A number of friends with those names are in my life.

2) Can you think of a song that includes your first name?

3) Lou sings that flirting is like a sport. Do you enjoy flirting?
Nope.

4) While Lou Bega's recording became a big hit worldwide, it enjoyed great popularity, where it was used during televised cricket matches. Do you know anything about the game of cricket?
Yeah, the British and their former colonies play it. It uses a bat, a ball and you back and forth to “bases.”

5) When Lou was riding high with "Mambo No. 5," Cher invited him to open for her on her 1999-2000 tour. Cher has more than 50 hit records, two television series, a Broadway show and an Oscar under her belt. Can you think of another performer who has succeeded in so many areas of entertainment?
 The Beatles

6) Lou turned 50 in April of this year. Are you soon celebrating a big birthday (one that ends in a 0 or 5)?
Well at my age every birthday is a celebration that I made it this far!

7) In 1999, when "Mambo No. 5" was on the radio, the movie American Pie premiered and was so popular it inspired three sequels. Have you seen any of the American Pie films?
This is the only American Pie that I know.

8) Also in 1999, Walmart opened its first store in the UK. Do you often shop at Walmart?
Well it has been sucha long time ago I don’t even remember when… 5 – 10 years.

9) Random question – Have you recently fallen asleep somewhere other than your bed? If yes, where did you doze off?
Well a better question is where haven’t you fallen asleep. Couches, chairs, hammocks, on the ground, against trees, air mattresses floating in a pool, and on and on...

I’m having company up here at the cottage from today until the 18th.

But tomorrow… tomorrow night we are getting hammered! The marine forecast is”
  • Saturday night: East winds \(10-15\) knots, increasing to \(15-20\) knots with gusts up to \(25\) knots after midnight. Seas \(2-4\) feet.
  • Sunday: East winds \(15-20\) knots, increasing to \(25-30\) knots with gusts up to \(40\) knots in the afternoon. Seas \(4-6\) feet, building to \(6-9\) feet.

There's going to be some wild and crazy weather for the next couple of day.

  1. The storm is going to affect us here on Long Island, too. I’ve already canceled my Sunday plans — we were supposed to go to an outdoor food festival. Boyfriend and I and the cats plan to hunker down for the duration,

  2. I'd be afraid to fall asleep floating in the pool. With my pale skin, and the sun reflecting on the water, I'm sure I'd look like a lobster in no time!

  4. I know everyone except an Erica. Every birthday is important when you’re 77. I don’t think any American understand cricket. Living in Chicago weather changes every five minutes.

  5. I hope your weather is not as bad as it sounds. Yikes.

  6. I know the words to Miss American Pie. It was on the charts for weeks when I was in high school. I guess the cottage is on the beach? Stay safe!
