Have We Learned Anything Yet?

On the radio as I was driving back from New Hampshire last weekend from the funeral of my cousin who was in the Air Force during Vietnam, I heard about the protests at Columbia University and that they shut down the university.

In 1970 I was driving to college and I heard on the radio about Kent State massacre and the college protests around the country shutting down campuses.
In 2024 I heard on the radio protesters are shutting down campuses.

Have we learned anything yet?

In 1970 we were sending our boys in to harms way.
In 2024 we are sending the war machines in the place of our boys.

Have we learned anything yet?

In 1967 there was "Blood in the streets in the town of New Haven"
in 2020 George Floyd was killed on the streets of Minneapolis.

Have we learned anything yet?

In 1972 Nixon broke in to the Watergate complex.
In 2020 rioters broke in to the Capitol.

Have we learned anything yet?

In 1985 the police bombed the headquarters of the Black Panthers in Philadelphia.
In 2024 we sell the bombs to other countries.

Have we learned anything yet?

In 1965 in Selma, Alabama there was a march for their civil rights.
In 2024 in states around the country there are marches for our rights for LGBTQ+ people.

Have we learned anything yet?

In 1970 Ohio Republican Governor Jim Rhodes called in the National Guard at Kent State.
On 2024 Republicans are calling for bring in the National Guard for Columbia University.

Have we learned anything yet?

In 1968 Democratic National Convention was held in Chicago and was protested for the United States' involvement in the Vietnam War.
In 2024 the Democratic National Committee will be held in Chicago.

Have we learned anything yet?
