TOPLINE Puberty blockers will no longer be prescribed to minors under age 18 in England outside of regulated clinical trials, the country’s National Health Service announced Tuesday, following an earlier review by the agency, the latest development in the controversial treatment that has sparked protests in the U.S., as well, over gender-affirming care in children.

KEY FACTS
  • Puberty blockers—used to delay the effects of puberty—will no longer be available to anyone under age 18 being treated by the state-funded NHS, a decision junior health minister Maria Caulfield said would “ensure care is based on evidence, expert clinical opinion” that is “in the best interests of the child.”
  • Google AI said,
  • Puberty blockers  have been used since the 1980s to treat precocious puberty in children. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved puberty blockers for use in 1993.
However, some research has been done on blockers in trans youth  since the late 1980s
The NHS called for an independent review of gender identity treatments for minors in 2020 amid a “significant increase” in referrals to the Gender Identity Development Service, which is scheduled to close at the end of March.
There have been dozens of studies done on the use of puberty blockers, they have been used for precocious puberty in children since the 1980s and the use of them for children with precocious puberty is exactly the sane for trans youth.
There are fewer than 100 children on puberty blockers who will continue their treatment at Leeds and University College London Hospital.
Once again the conservative blow it out of proportion to create an outcry.

Puberty Blockers: What You Should Know
By Victoria Pelham

If it seems like kids are growing up quicker today than when you were young, it’s not just your imagination.

The average age of puberty has been falling for decades. It’s now around 10.5 years old for girls and 11.5 years old for boys, according to the Endocrine Society. The COVID-19 pandemic sped up the timeline even more: Multiple international studies found a rise in girls seeking care for precocious puberty during 2020 stay-at-home orders.

The condition doesn’t have to disrupt your child’s life. Providers can treat precocious puberty—marked by breast development before age 8 or testes growth before age 9—with hormonal suppressants, also called puberty blockers. With supervision, these reversible drugs safely and effectively delay a child’s development until they’re ready.
I want to note something “these reversible drugs safely” the Republicans spread lies that the effects are not reversible!
About 1 in 5,000 to 10,000 children are affected by precocious puberty, the National Organization for Rare Disorders says. Maturing too early can jeopardize growth and mental health, and because most girls reach puberty between 8 and 13 years old and boys between 9 and 14 years old, it can isolate children at an awkward time in their lives.
Now there are about 72.5 million children in the United States in 2022, so divide by 10,000 that means there are 7,250 children with precocious puberty. Since trans people are about 0.5% of the population therefore are less than 50 trans children on puberty blockers!!!!

Cedar Sinai goes on to write,
A child might need treatment, depending on the cause of early puberty, how young they are and any resulting mental health symptoms they are experiencing. That could include surgery if a tumor is to blame.

Endocrinologists mainly treat precocious puberty with GnRH analogues.

These puberty-blocking drugs postpone the process by suppressing gonadotropin hormone release. They include:
  • Lupron (leuprolide), a monthly or once-every-three-months intramuscular injection
  • Fensolvi, a different leuprolide injection administered subcutaneously every six months
  • Triptodur (triptorelin), a six-month intramuscular injection
  • Supprelin (histrelin), an annual surgical implant
While puberty blockers have been scrutinized by some due to their use in caring for transgender children, these drugs have been in use since the 1980s and are overwhelmingly safe if used appropriately. Side effects such as bone health risks typically only occur with prolonged use past the age of puberty.

A pediatrician can use these medications to slow down physical maturity to a healthier pace, protect bone growth and help young patients adjust as needed. Experts suggest discontinuing the treatments around age 12.

"We just want kids to enjoy being kids,” Dr. Schweiger emphasizes.
Why do the Republicans and conservatives have to lie all the time?

Meanwhile we have our own court case on trans youth healthcare...

A federal appeals court will hear arguments Thursday over Arkansas’ first-in-the-nation ban on gender-affirming care for minors, as the fight over the restrictions on transgender youths adopted by two dozen states moves closer to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Arkansas is appealing a federal judge’s ruling last year that struck down the state’s ban as unconstitutional, the first decision to overturn such a prohibition. The 2021 law would prohibit doctors from providing gender-affirming hormone treatment, puberty blockers or surgery to anyone under 18.

The case is going before the full 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rather than a three-judge panel after it granted a request by Republican Attorney General Tim Griffin. The move could speed up the case’s march toward the U.S. Supreme Court, which has been asked to block similar laws in Kentucky and Tennessee.

It’s unclear when the 8th Circuit will make a ruling, though one is unlikely to come immediately.
Our lives should not be subject to the to the whims of the judge!

My body, my choice!
