We All Have To Become Sales People

We have something to sell and we need to sell others on it.

“Oh I can’t do that!

“Its not my problem, I’m a woman now!”

“I can’t out myself!”

“Politics is not my thing!”

We all have heard the excuses why trans people don’t want to get involved in politics.

I was the same way until one support group meeting when a trans woman came in and her face was all black and blue and swollen. You see she was working on the job as a carpenter and two other carpenters came into the room where she was working alone and beat the crap out of her with two by fours. As they were doing the beatings they were yelling profanities and saying how they hated gays.

The officer who came to her “aid” refused to arrest the the two saying that it was just her word against theirs and as she was being put into an ambulance with her face all battered. She raised her voice at the officer and she got arrested for “Disturbing the Peace” and they fled to Ohio.*

This wasn’t down in some red neck state, this was in Bridgeport.

It was that day that I knew that I could stand by and do nothing. I became a member of the Democratic party

Americans overwhelmingly oppose transgender athletes in female sports, poll shows

The majority of Americans believe that greater social acceptance of transgender people is good for society, but they overwhelmingly reject transgender women being permitted to compete in sports against biological women, according to a new poll.

We have a problem.

Most people in the US do not know a trans person or understand what gender dysphoria is. Harvey Milk was right.

My name is Harvey Milk, and I'm here to recruit you. I've been saying this one for years. It's a political joke. I can't help it. I've got to tell it. I've never been able to talk to this many political people before, so if I tell you nothing else, you may be able to go home laughing a bit.

Gay brothers and sisters, you must come out. Come out to your parents. I know that it is hard and will hurt them, but think about how they will hurt you in the voting booth! Come out to your relatives. Come out to your friends, if indeed they are your friends. Come out to your neighbors, to your fellow workers, to the people who work where you eat and shop. Come out only to the people you know, and who know you, not to anyone else. But once and for all, break down the myths. Destroy the lies and distortions. For your sake. For their sake.

That was true in 1978 against the evils that Anita Bryant with "Save Our Children" spread and it is true today, the attackers our different from 1978 but their message is still the same.

I realize that for many it is very, very hard to come out but the children in Texas and the other Republican state did it, came out to protest. They marched out of schools, they stood up to town hall, they testified before the legislature, and were interviewed by the media. If they did it so can you.

When we were lobbying for the non-discrimination bill I had my “elevator speech” ready, a 30 second, one minute speech why we needed to pass the bill for anyone who asked and we need to do the same thing now for why to vote Democrat.

We separated into three different responses and we need to that now. One for a follower of Fox News, “I’m sorry you feel that way.” and walk away. Don't get into a argument with them, just shake your hear and walk away. One version for our supporters, “That you for supporting us and I hope you will continue to support us on election day.” The third version is the longest and you might want to have different version of your “elevator speech,” maybe one for a person concerned for young children and you might want to mention that nothing is done to trans children until they can form an “informed consent” and about the Standard of Care. Listen to their concerns and reply to them.

We need to be there for other causes… women rights, labor rights, disability rights, church groups, and other liberal causes. We need to be seen helping them. We need to build coalitions. We need allies.

Trans children are dying. We need to come out to the neighbors, to our fellow workers, to the people who work where you eat and shop. We need to be visible!
