The haters are crawling out from the swamps, to harass us. Many times the harassment doesn’t amount to the level of a “bias crime” but rather to the level of a “bias incident” but you still want to report it to someone.
The state now has a “Hate Crime Tip” line, the data from the web-page is reported to the police but the police get to look at the data for tracking “bias incident” not for investigations (Right now the data is not exempt from the state’s Freedom of Information Act, but there is a bill in the legislature to exempt the information about the person reporting reporting the incident.).
So what type of tips do they want… stealing of Pride flags, somebody calling us names (If they make threats of violence then it becomes a bias crime.), the throwing of anti-Semitic or homophobic literature on lawns, graffiti, and other non-violent harassment.
Where can I go to report an incident?
The Connecticut Hate Crimes Advisory Council web-page… They have a link to report a “Hate Crime” to the State Police and the FBI for criminal investigation. And further down the page there is this...
Report a hate crime or bias incident to the Hate Crimes Advisory Council by clicking here: Reporthate.ct.gov.
Information reported will be collected and analyzed by the Institute for Municipal and Regional Policy at UConn and reviewed by the Connecticut Hate Crimes Advisory Council.
IT WILL NOT BE INVESTIGATED AS CRIME!
