May 23, 2035Grab your coin purse: The U.S. may be on the verge of ditching its penny. The U.S. Treasury is reportedly gearing up to stop putting new one-cent coins into circulation by early next year, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday, which could change the way you pay.The Treasury made its final order of penny blanks this month, the Journal reported, citing a spokesperson, meaning the Mint will only produce pennies until it runs out of blanks. The end of the penny will mean businesses will have to round up or down prices to the nearest five cents, the spokesperson added.
Hey do you buy gas with cash? What happens if it is $42.23... Do you pay $42.20 or $42.25? Or suppose you want to buy something that was $19.99 and now is $20.00 but the sale tax is 6.35% so the total is $21.27. Will it be rounded down to $21.20 or up to $21,25? And who gets to eat the difference? Us or the state? Do you want to guess who will be stuck with the bill?
