Mini-Post: Caved In

They gave up without a fight! But what do you expect... the Republicans have a trifecta!

These groups are not discriminator! The Republicans in their fake fight on diversity have closed Pride Centers and Women Centers on campuses around the country.

Ohio University announced Tuesday that it is sunsetting its diversity, equity and inclusion offices, including the Multicultural Center, Pride Center and Women’s Center.

In a message to students, Ohio University President Lori Gonzalez said the university is closing its diversity offices as required by Senate Bill 1, which will go into effect in late June. Gonzalez said OHIO is eliminating all of its Diversity and Inclusion staff positions, and impacted staff have the opportunity to apply for other positions within the university or receive separation benefits. See previous coverage of Senate Bill 1 in the video player above.

“I hope you will all join me in recognizing and celebrating the lasting impact that the Division of Diversity and Inclusion – as well as all the staff members who have dedicated their time and talent to diversity and inclusion work at OHIO – will forever have on our University, on the students we serve, and on each of us,” Gonzalez said. “We must work collectively to preserve the legacy of their work and carry it forever forward.”
Around the nation other Pride Centers have closed... University of North Florida, New College of Florida, University of Houston, Texas A&M University, University of Utah, University of Alabama, and Georgia Tech. And many of those same schools also closed down women centers.

Now, I want to get one thing straight... cultural centers on campuses Do Not Discriminate! Anyone can join! You don't have to be LGBTQ+ to got to the centers.

You know this whole thing goes against a court rulings;
  • Boyd High GSA v. Boyd County Board of Education (2004)
  • Noble Street Gay-Straight Alliance v. Noble Network of Charter Schools (2006)
  • Gonzalez v. School Board of Okeechobee County (2008)
  • Yulee High School GSA Case (2009)
  • Pendleton Heights High School GSA Case (2021)
So it is not like there was only court ruling there have been a whole slew of them! According to Education Week, the Equal Access Act ensures that if a school allows any non-curricular student group to meet, it must also allow other non-curricular groups, including those focused on LGBTQ+ issues, to form and meet on campus.

But as usual, the Republicans don't care about courts, laws or the Constitution!
