Saturday 9: It All Depends On You (1959)

On Saturdays I take a break from the heavy stuff and have some fun… but first some updates:
  • First: My cataract surgery went very well. Fir the first time since elementary school I don’t need glasses to see! (I will need glasses to drive and to see clearly in the distance.)
  • Second: I enjoyed the party in Vermont even though I had to go up and back in the same day. (I napped at the party, I found the swing recliner and slept for about an hour.)
  • Third: My central air went kaput… last month and it just got repaired! Through two 90 degree heat waves. (It took that long because I was at the Cape for most of the time and also because of my eye surgery)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) In this song, Shirley Bassey sings that she could be happy or sad. As you answer these questions, do lean more toward happy or sad?
I lean toward happy… I’m about in the 12:30 position, just slightly happy. The negative factors… my health and the world political situation.

2) She tells us that she can save money or spend it. Do you try to stick to a budget?
No, I hardly touch a check book now. Everything is automatic deposit. I very rarely buy anything other than the staples.

3) By the time Shirley Bassey recorded "It All Depends on You," it was already an oldie, written back in 1926. Can you think of a song, book, or movie that you enjoy today that you believe audiences will relate to 2125?
Hmm… I don’t think there will be one.
It seems to me that all the new blockbuster movies are “bang, bang, shoot-them-up” movies that don’t age well. Just look at Dr. No (1962) and From Russia with Love (1963) they havn’t aged that well. Or look at Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, it will be like us watching “Flash Gordon”

4) Though she has risen to the title Dame Commander of the British Empire (DBE), her childhood allowed her little education. She dropped out at 15 and got a factory job to help her family. How old were you when you got your first full-time job? What was it?
Full time summer job? 1966.
Full time job? 1974

5) A favorite of the Royal Family, Shirley performed at the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Party at Buckingham Palace. How would you like to celebrate your next anniversary or birthday? Are you in the mood for a big blow out, or would you prefer something low key?
At my age, it is just another year.
Have you notice little kids say “I’m 5 and a half!” make them feel older for each month they have lived. While seniors say “I’m 75 and a half!” because each month is an accomplishment.

6) Madame Tussaud's has two wax figurines of Shirley – one in London and a second in Las Vegas. Do you enjoy wax museums, or do you think they're creepy?
I have never been to one so I don’t know. I suppose it will on depend on how life like they are.

7) In 1959, when this song was popular, most women wore nylons on a daily basis and the average price per pair was $1. What socks or leg wear – if any – do you have on right now?
We are in a heat wave when I wrote this… it is 90/90 day. And the less cloths the better... I reclined on the deck in the shade in my bathing suit with a fan blowing on me outside because there was no breeze.

8) Also in 1959, Alaska became our 49th state. Today, cruise lines showcase Alaska on 4- or 7-night cruises. What do you consider the perfect length for a vacation trip? Is a 3-day weekend too short? Are two weeks away from home too long? What's your ideal?
Well I’m retired and I am usually up at the Cape all summer but I think traveling one week or ten days is long enough.

9) Random question: Which cable channel would you watch more often – one that shows nothing but classic sitcoms, or one that shows nothing but new movies?
The channel I watch the most is PBS, the News Hour and shows like "Midsummer Night Murders"  and “Death in Paradise.” I hope you all contacted your legislators and telling them to save PBS!

Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend!

  3. Hooray for successful eye procedures! I got my air conditioner installed by the complex's handyman this week--just in time for the highest temps. And, I contacted my representatives to save PBS!

  4. #3...I agree with you. I don't think the new stuff is as good as the old classics.
I am glad your surgery went well! I am glad you got your A/C fixed too. It is going to be really hot here next week with high humidity. Stay cool. Loved your answers! Have a nice weekend.

  5. Glad to hear you are feeling well. I was 77 last week no biggie just thank God I made it. Last week I watch Cary Grant’s My Favorite Wife still great. Been to three wax museums avoided the creepy parts. Barefoot sandals and flip flop all summer.

  6. Glad to hear your surgery went well. I am going to need it too eventually. When you say the cape, do you mean at the beach? I have to stay off the news as much as I can because it is so depressing. I forgot to contact my reps about PBS. I like to watch their programs too.

  7. I'm actually looking forward to cataract surgery because of the idea of losing my glasses after almost 50 years. Now I just have to convince my eye doctor and insurance company... ;)
    Stay cool!!

  9. That's wonderful that you can see better now!! As a kid I thought Flash Gordon was real and that Ming the Merciless was our biggest enemy. I was really let down when my father told me it wasn't real.
