Stein, who is also pro-choice, vetoed three anti-DEI measures and one that would target trans rights.

The vetoed bill include Senate Bill 558, which focused on UNC System schools and community colleges, Senate Bill 227, which targeted K-12 education, House Bill 171, aimed at state and local government agencies and House Bill 805, which combined a collection of social agenda priorities including targeting trans individuals and providing parents with expanded rights to challenge school library books.
And he called them out for it...
He said of his decision: “At a time when teachers, law enforcement, and state employees need pay raises and people need shorter lines at the DMV, the legislature failed to pass a budget and, instead, wants to distract us by stoking culture wars that further divide us.

“These mean-spirited bills would marginalize vulnerable people and also undermine the quality of public services and public education. Therefore, I am vetoing them. I stand ready to work with the legislature when it gets serious about protecting people and addressing North Carolinians’ pressing concerns.”
House Bill 171, House Bill 805, Senate Bill 227, and Senate Bill 558 would have restricted transgender and LGBTQ rights and DEI efforts in public schools, as well as state and local government agencies.

House Bill 171 would have also barred state agencies from promoting workplace DEI practices or programs and prohibited state agencies or units of local government from using federal funds that require compliance with DEI initiatives, the Duke Chronicle reports.

Meanwhile, in Senate Bill 227, it would have banned the discussion of “divisive concepts” related to race and sex in K-12 public school classrooms, including notions that “particular character traits, values, moral or ethical codes, privileges, or beliefs should be ascribed to a race or sex.”

Senate Bill 558 would have extended DEI restrictions into higher education by prohibiting DEI-related topics in curriculum and classroom discussion at public colleges and universities.

Stein says he’s ready to work with the state legislature when they “get serious about protecting people and addressing North Carolinians’ pressing concerns.”
The Republicans see this as a way to sneak Jim Crow laws back in!

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives gained significant momentum nationwide following the 2020 George Floyd incident. Intended to foster equality and representation for marginalized communities, DEI efforts have also faced substantial opposition, with critics claiming that these initiatives constitute discrimination against White people. Like the Jim Crow movement from the turn of the twentieth century, the anti-DEI movement has broad implications in contemporary society and how we relate to others as fellow citizens.

[...]

Like Jim Crow, the anti-DEI movement seeks to perpetuate a status quo that marginalizes and excludes certain groups. By expanding its targets beyond African Americans, this movement represents a new iteration of historical resistance to progress. It’s critical that these patterns be recognized and addressed. In the past, mass movements supported by the federal government led to change. In the current environment, the federal government is on the opposing side. It’s left to We the People to mobilize and set things right. Make no mistake about it, while the anti-DEI movement doesn’t wear hoods and robes and burn crosses, it’s Old Jim Crow revived.
Trump administration is... racist! Xenophobic*! Queerphobic! Anti-non-Christian religious bigotry! Many of them support a White Christian Nation! [I asked ChatGPT and it blew a gasket!]

*You don't believe me? Why then does Trump bans immigrants from non-White countries but welcomes with open arms White South Africans with made up lies about being persecuted by Black South Africans?
