Speaking Of Pride

It seems like everyone wants to get on the Pride Parade this year. The latest is Middletown that will hold a parade in June.

MIDDLETOWN — The Common Council voted unanimously Monday to hold a LGBTQ Pride celebration on June 15.

Supporters of the proposal said it will be the only Pride parade held in the state during June, which is LGBTQ Pride month.

Middletown’s decision to hold the parade - and assorted other activities - takes on an added significance given that 2019 is the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, which is considered the birth event of the modern LGBTQ rights movement.

New York City police spilled into the Stonewall Inn on June 28, 1969, to arrest gay men.

But members of the gay clientele fought back, an act gay activists said was empowering in a time when discrimination was rampant.
Here we go again… erasing the lesbians and trans people.
The city and the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce are working jointly to present the Pride parade that serves the lesbian/gay/bi-sexual/trans-gender and queer communities.

Chamber President Larry McHugh came before the council to speak in support of the proposal, which he said will have a two-pronged goal of bringing thousands of people to the city (and in doing so supporting local businesses) but also to show how inclusive Middletown is as a city.
But Middletown is not the only municipality holding a Pride event…

  1. Oh here we go. Pride from the government on down to the people almost as bad as corporate pride. Where is the Middletown LGBTQ community in all of this. No mention in the article. We will be going to the reclaim pride in NYC as long as they keep it on the up and up.
