The Keller school district’s decision to cancel “The Laramie Project,” a play that looks at reactions to the 1998 murder of a gay college student has led to nationwide criticism. On Feb. 23, parents from Timber Creek High School received an email from the district stating that officials decided to cancel ”The Laramie Project,” which looks at the reactions of people in Laramie, Wyoming, following the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a gay student at the University of Wyoming.
I guess the truth hurts, we can’t have little kids learning about the persecution of the LGBTQ+ community. We can’t have learning about “these people” it might turn them in gays.
The school district said in an emailed statement to the Star-Telegram: “The decision to move forward with another production at Timber Creek High School was based on the desire to provide a performance similar to the ones that have created much excitement from the community, like this year’s Keller ISD musical productions of Mary Poppins and White Christmas. The decision was a collaborative one made by many stakeholders. Students will still be studying, discussing, and analyzing The Laramie Project script at school.”
Translation from Orwellian: This here Lilly white, straight, god fearing Christians community don’t want those gays coming in here.

Mary Anne Weatherred, whose son was supposed to perform in The Laramie Project, said she’s concerned about a pattern of anti-LGBTQ decisions in Keller.

[…]

If people don’t agree with the message of the show, she said, then they shouldn’t come watch it.

“But they don’t need to take it away from the kids,” she said.

The Laramie Project, which is often performed in high schools across the country, explores the community’s reaction to the murder of Matthew Shepard, a gay 21-year-old University of Wyoming student who was attacked, tied to a fence in a field and left to die.
And you wonder why the the killings of LGBTQ+ people in the U.S. is increasing, it attitudes like this.
