Five people were killed and 18 injured in a shooting at a gay nightclub on Saturday night in Colorado Springs, Colorado, police said.

A suspect was in custody and was being treated for injuries after the attack at Club Q, Colorado Springs police Lieutenant Pamela Castro told a news conference.

Police got the initial phone call just before midnight about the shooting, Castro said, adding that upon arrival, officers located one person who was believed to be the suspect inside the club.

She did not give any information on the motive for the attack and declined to say what kind of firearm was used in the shooting.

In its Google listing, Club Q describes itself as an "adult-oriented gay and lesbian nightclub hosting theme nights such as karaoke, drag shows & Djs."

That was the headlines I saw when I woke up!

The police have been tight lipped about the motive and details. The Denver Post reported…

As of Sunday morning, officials declined to answer questions about the suspect’s motive for the shooting, citing the ongoing investigation.

In a statement, Club Q termed the shooting a hate attack.

“Club Q is devastated by the senseless attack on our community,” the club posted on its Facebook page. It said its prayers were with victims and families, adding: “We thank the quick reactions of heroic customers that subdued the gunman and ended this hate attack.”

KKTV posted,

During a briefing Sunday morning, the Colorado Springs Polic Department reported two firearms, including what they described as a “long rifle,” were found at the scene. A motive is also being investigated, including the possibility of the violent attack being considered a hate crime.

“At least two heroic people” confronted the gunman and stopped the shooting, Colorado Springs Polic Chief Adrian Vasquez stated.

CNN reported on the possible background of the shooter,

A man with the same name and of the same age as the shooting suspect was arrested in June of last year in connection with a bomb threat, according to a statement from law enforcement at the time.

When asked at a news conference Sunday if it was the same person, officials said they had to follow protocol before releasing any information on prior cases.

According to a June 2021 news release from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, an Anderson Lee Aldrich was arrested that month on charges of felony menacing and first-degree kidnapping.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report by the man’s mother that he was “threatening to cause harm to her with a homemade bomb, multiple weapons, and ammunition,” according to the release. Deputies called the suspect, and he “refused to comply with orders to surrender,” the release said, leading them to evacuate nearby homes.

Several hours after the initial police call, the sheriff’s crisis negotiations unit was able to get Aldrich to leave the house, and he was arrested after walking out the front door. Authorities did not find any explosives in the home.

It was not immediately clear how the case was resolved.

Update 3:20PM

In a New York Times article...

Early reports indicate that the suspect entered the nightclub wearing body armor and began firing with an AR-15 style assault rifle, according to two law enforcement officials briefed on the shooting. He was tackled and subdued by someone inside the club, possibly a combat veteran, the officials said.
