Sam’s Saturday 9: Brandy

 Sam’s Saturday 9: Brandy (1972)

On Saturdays I take a break from the heavy stuff and have some fun…

Sorry for not replying last week but a close friend passed away from a short illness and I rushed back to Connecticut for the funeral.

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

This is one of my favorite songs, when this came out I wish that I was her.

1) This song opens in a bar where lonely sailors reminisce about their homes. How long have you lived at your current residence? Does it feel like home?

Ages. Since 1991, and I've been in town for over sixty years.

P.S. I paid off my mortgage last year.

2) Brandy is a waitress at the bar. Have you ever worked at a job where you received tips?

No, I only got a pat on the back and comp time which I could never take.

3) Brandy wears a locket on a braided chain. Are you wearing any jewelry as you answer these 9 questions?

Nope, other than earrings I usually do not wear jewelry.

4) According to the lyrics, the sailors seem to prefer whiskey or wine. What's your go-to adult beverage?

I hate whiskey it taste like charcoal! Yuck. I will take the wine or rather I prefer a cream sherry but I might have a sherry once possibly twice a week.

5) This song was such a big hit that, after its release, Brandy became a popular name for newborn girls. Do you know anyone named Brandy?

Nope.

6) Barry Manilow scored a hit in 1974 with "Mandy." That song was initially called "Brandy," but it was changed to avoid confusion with this record. Do you have a favorite Barry Manilow song?

Oh who doesn’t, the problem is narrowing it down to one. It is a tie between It Never Rains in Southern California & Can't Take My Eyes off You

7) In 1972, when this song was popular, residents of South Dakota endured a catastrophic flood when Rapid Creek overflowed. Give us a little geography lesson: what body of water is nearest you?

Some ponds that a factory in town used for water power. Then there is the Connecticut river.

8) Also in 1972, the first women were permitted to run in the Boston marathon. Have you ever visited Boston?

Of course being have way between New York and Boston, I have visited both of them many times, Boston is laid out like the city planers were on LSD.

9) Random summertime question: Would you prefer to swim in a pool, a lake/river, or the ocean?

In order of my preferences, lake, ocean, pool and never a river. A river has currents and I am not a strong swimmer.

  1. I'm sorry about the loss of your friend.

I hadn't considered the currents in a river. Good thinking.

  4. "Boston is laid out like the city planers were on LSD." If I ever get there, I will look for this phenom! lol Yay to no more Mortgage! Absolutely, with you on the rivers; they have currents that are not at all predictable from one day to the next.
