Question: If An Organization Does Good Acts But They Discriminate.

Suppose an organization is know for their philanthropy but they discriminate against LGBTQ+ members, should you support it?

There are many service organizations that do good, the give out scholarships, do projects around the towns, run youth sports programs, however, they do not allow lesbians, gays, or trans people as members or members of other races or nationalities but because they are private organizations they are exempt from non-discrimination laws.

Think about these examples;

  • Suppose they are white supremacists group and they run a soup kitchen but only allow white people to get the food.
  • Suppose they are an organizations that run homeless shelters and detox centers but do not allow LGBTQ+ people in their shelters.
  • Suppose they are an organization that runs an adoption agencies but will only allow adoptions to straight married Christian couples.
  • Suppose they run free medical clinics but do not allow LGBTQ+ members.
  • Suppose they give out scholarships to high school students but they do not allow LGBTQ+ members.

Should you support the organization by donating to them?

Would you join the organizations?

Where do you draw the line? Does it make a difference who they discriminate against, whether it is against race, religion, or sexual orientation or gender identity is one okay or are they all okay to discriminate against because they do good?

What do you think?

  1. I hold a grudge when it comes to trans discrimination. Once I am aware that a group or individual discriminates against our kind, I never forget it and will have nothing to do with them.

    1. I agree 100% with you Stana. I still dislike HRC to this day and will never forgive the boys who began the Gay Activist Alliance and mistreated the trans folks back in the day. I also shake my head here in Ct. when the Bi and Trans community were left out of the 1991 civil rights bill using some very flimsy excuses. Nope I don't forget either.

  2. There are thousands of churches in the United States. They like to think of themselves as pipelines to God but in reality they are organizations of men, and as such, primarily political. If your particular sect is not giving you the respect you deserve there is another one, probably right across the street, that will. Take your dollars there instead.

  3. If they are discriminating against folks, they are not doing good in my book. These pick and choose smorgasbord Christians got it all wrong. I would never give any money, time, or help to an organization that discriminates against our people. Very good questions and I think that we will be faced more and more with these types. It is really a shame that the LGBTQI+ community hasn't their crap together and formed all of their own institutions by now. Nobody is fooling me there is plenty of money but so many have spent so much time playing straight.
