Sad News Out Of Florida This Time

Yesterday it was about Texas, today it is about Florida!

For us our healthcare is under attack by the Republicans, they want to deny us insurance and prosecute doctors.

Florida saw the number of transgender Medicaid recipients seeking gender-affirming treatment almost double in recent years — yet the state still banned its program from covering such medical care.

The number of adults and children who received Medicaid coverage for behavioral therapy, hormone treatments and, in rare cases, surgery for gender dysphoria increased from 593 enrollees in 2018 to 1,209 in 2021, according to new data from Florida’s chief Medicaid regulator. Gender dysphoria refers to the feelings of discomfort or distress some transgender people experience when their bodies don’t align with their gender.

Michael Haller, chief of pediatric endocrinology at the University of Florida, said the data only bolsters claims that the state’s ban on Medicaid payments for gender affirming treatment is nothing but political theater that blocks people from accessing critical care.

“Our state health leadership is acting like this is the most important issue facing our state, and our kids’ health right now,” Haller said during a Tuesday phone interview. “It’s infuriating because it’s actually affecting people’s access to care.”

Well Dr. Haller that is exactly their goal to block our healthcare. They are using us as a stalking horse to hide behind.

Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis has pushed policies and laws that are seen as antagonistic toward the LGBTQ community, including publicly supporting the state’s new law that prohibits teachers from leading classroom discussions on sexual orientation and gender identity for kids in kindergarten through third grade. His support of such policies has helped increase his national profile as he weighs a possible 2024 bid for president.

His brutal attacks on LGBTQ+ is to gain favor with white supremacists and Trumpers in the 2024 elections and he doesn’t care about anyone that he kills if they get in his way. The suicide rates are climbing. WFLA reported that “

“While sharing similar experiences as their heterosexual peers, Florida youth of diverse genders and sexualities have heighted experiences of suicidal thoughts, plans, and attempts, bullying at school, and teasing or name calling because of their gender expression and/or sexual orientation,” SPCC reported.

Meanwhile human rights organizations has sued Florida…

A coalition of transgender-rights organizations is preparing to sue Florida to stop the state’s Medicaid regulator from banning coverage of gender-affirming treatments.

Simone Chriss, director of the Southern Legal Counsel’s Transgender Rights Initiative, said on Wednesday that the coalition is expecting to file the case in federal court and will seek a preliminary injunction to halt the ban from going forward.

“We are trying to get this filed as quickly as we possibly can,” Chriss said. “We were expecting to have a little more time before this actually went into effect.”

The new rules prohibit Medicaid from covering treatments such as puberty blockers, hormone therapies or surgical procedures for gender dysphoria, which refers to the feelings of discomfort or distress some transgender people experience when their bodies don’t align with their gender.

You don’t want to get between the governor and his ambition, he will just roll over you!

The medical community is living in fear, caught between a rock and a hard place, some hospitals stopping treatment for transgender youth in Florida

In Tampa Bay, a child’s surgery was canceled. In Miami, a hospital stopped accepting new patients seeking care for gender dysphoria. It comes as Florida calls for a ban on such procedures.

While Florida considers banning hormone therapy and surgeries for transgender youth, the current political debate about treatment for gender dysphoria is already having a chilling effect on those seeking care.

A surgery scheduled for a St. Petersburg transgender boy at Tampa General Hospital was canceled in June after both the hospital and the unaffiliated surgeon expressed concerns about performing the procedure over fears of future sanctions, according to the boy’s mother. More patients are traveling out of state to get treatment, according to some surgeons. It’s also become tougher for plastic surgeons to find hospitals willing to allow them to use operating rooms, said Sidhbh Gallagher, a Miami plastic surgeon who specializes in surgery for people transitioning gender.

Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami said on Sunday that it stopped accepting new patients to its gender program, and several pediatric clinics have either followed suit or have ceased prescribing puberty blockers and hormones for children, said Michael Haller, chief of pediatric endocrinology at the University of Florida.

“This is another example of politics interfering with the inviolability of the doctor-patient relationship,” Haller told the Tampa Bay Times in an email. “I expect to see additional situations in which patients are forced to seek care outside of our state.”

The governor has created chaos in the school over his pogrom of LGBTQ+ people’s his draconian laws about LGBTQ+ people in schools has teachers fearing for their jobs!

Back to School in DeSantis’s Florida, as Teachers Look Over Their Shoulders
Gov. Ron DeSantis is battling what he calls “indoctrination” in schools. New laws have left many teachers questioning everything from pride flags to “The Great Gatsby.”

Erin Brown, a teacher in St. Johns County, Fla., typically keeps a gay pride flag hanging up in her classroom. As the faculty sponsor of a Gay-Straight Alliance club at her high school, she wants her students to know they are safe with her.

But this year, Ms. Brown found herself quietly repurposing the flag.

No longer on full display, it now hangs as a “rainbow background,” partially obscured among posters, photos, a calendar and other trinkets on her class bulletin board.

The change is emblematic of the fear, uncertainty and confusion many educators in Florida say they are feeling this school year, as new laws take effect restricting teaching on gender identity, sexual orientation and race and expanding the oversight of books.

[…]

The changes come with significant stakes for school districts, which may be sued over violations to the law focusing on L.G.B.T.Q. identity. Within the first few weeks of school, teachers in some parts of the state have been asked to take down stickers showing support for L.G.B.T.Q. students, to review every book on their classroom shelves and, in at least one case, to remove rainbow colored paper from a classroom door after the decorations prompted a complaint from a parent, according to interviews with teachers, union officials and advocates for gay rights across Florida.

The teachers and students are living in fear!

If the teachers are LGBTQ+ they are afraid to have a picture of their spouse on their desk unlike straight teachers who have pictures of their spouses on their desks. LGBTQ+ Students are afraid to come out in the climate of fear.

However, we are not alone in being persecuted so are other minorities.

Nowhere is that more visible than Florida, where Governor DeSantis has made issues surrounding the teaching of gender identity and race central to his platform, and has led the charge for parental oversight in education, amid a re-election campaign and, some political observers theorize, a run for president in 2024.

The governor is using hate and fear to gather votes in his tyrannical administration, he has fired elected offices for not toeing his party line! He has stripped legal rights from counties for bucking him! He has become a mini dictator.

Mr. DeSantis “firmly believes” in the rights of parents to know what schools are teaching their children, his office said in a statement.

But only some parents rights… if they are not LGBTQ+, or their children are not  LGBTQ+, or non-Christian, or non-white. He just believes in the rights of evangelical Christians!

And he wants to be the next president of the United States… God help us!

Today is a travel day, I'm heading home for Hartford Pride and then coming back to the Cape the following week.
