A Hot Topic

Today’s post is not so much about an article but rather the response to the article… the article is about Drag Queens.

Chris Weaver stole the show with his surprise drag performance on the season finale of The Voice this week, but in a not-at-all-surprising turn of events, bigoted viewers are clutching their pearls in horror.

After being eliminated earlier in the season, Weaver returned to the stage as Nedra Belle and performed Jessie J’s “Bang Bang” with fellow drag queens Jan Sport, Lagoona Bloo and Rosé.

The performance was so great it had judges Miley Cyrus and Jennifer Hudson throwing their shoes at the stage in adoration. But angry tweets immediately came pouring in because—gasp!—think of the children!

“Shame on you NBC, I thought you catered to families. You really crossed the line when you allowed the ’drag queen’ act,” wrote one outraged viewer.
Think of the children!

OMG what will happen to the children! Well absolutely nothing, what will affect them is the way adults behave and they are behaving badly.

And it is not just the conservative religious community that is up in arms but also the LGBT community. Just like any community the LGBTQ community is not homogeneous but rather it is heterogeneous, we are made up of individuals from all race, religions, and social economic backgrounds and like all communities there’re bigots; homophobes, transphobes, internalized homophobes, internalized transphobes, racists, and sexists.

There are some trans people who despise drag queens and I personally believe that it stems from internalized transphobes… “I’m not like them!”

I’ve seen it in supports groups the homophobia and the dragphobia.

I’ve also seen a lot of transphobia from the lesbians and gays.

But I have also seen way, way more gays and lesbians who accept trans people, way more who stand up for us and stand alongside of us.

I think part of the divide is fostered by the media.

When you see photos of Pride parades who gets to be on the front page… it is the drag queens. They sell the ads; just having ordinary trans people, gays, and lesbians on the front page doesn’t grab readers.

Many trans people shy away from being grouped with the drag communities because I think they are homophobic, many trans people are married and I think that they are afraid their spouses with think that they are gay… guilt by association.

Another factor might be that many trans people, gay and lesbian people adhere to the gender binary and drag queens shred the gender binary.

My take is that anyone who crosses the gender normative is trans. Period.

  1. You are completely correct in this Diana but good old human nature steps in with its us versus them mindset and spoils it for everyone. It's tiresome but trust me when I say that the people writing in horror to NBC will be surpassed in tolerance by their own grown children. Its just a matter of time
