The Boy Scouts…

…is a private organization so they claim and the Supreme Court has affirmed and because they are a private organization they can discriminate any way they want. What I want to know is if it is a private organization why are they getting public assistance? Many of troops meet at firehouses, schools and police stations for free. If they are truly private then they should be paying their own way and not getting free rent at the taxpayer’s expense.

An Oak Park man is returning his Eagle Scout medal to the Boy Scouts of America in protest of the organization's recent decision to continue its ban against homosexual Scouts and leaders.

Rob Breymaier, executive director of the Oak Park Regional Housing Center, said he has long opposed the anti-gay policy, but he said he wanted to send back the medal because he has lost hope that the 102-year-old organization would "do the right thing."

"I could always explain away that it was an old policy and that sooner or later, we'll be able to force a vote on the issue," Breymaier said. "But when this vote happened and they reaffirmed the policy, it was just too much. It was infuriating, embarrassing and upsetting."
If the scouts are truly a private organization then they should stop receiving public funded support in the form of free rent, otherwise they should obey all the laws, including the non-discrimination laws.

  1. You are absolutely right, Diana. Around here, the scouts tend to meet in churches which is fine. They should not be meeting in buildings funded by our tax dollars.
