Back when I was working a regular 7-to-3 job, we were bought out, and our jobs went overseas.
So, that’s when the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) program kicked in, and it paid for my MSW, which changed my whole direction—from engineer to social sciences!
Sadly, out of around 70 people who got laid off, only one took advantage of the TAA program: me.
Even though nobody else from work used the program, it successfully retrained millions of workers over nearly 50 years who lost their jobs to foreign competition or outsourcing. But during Trump’s first term—anyone want to guess what happened?—shifts in trade policy under the Trump administration strangled the program before it ultimately hit its statutory expiration date under Biden.
