This Morning... Trump & the DSM

This morning, I was researching a blog post with AI about how the media failed to report that Trump wants to ban trans people from owning guns because of supposed “mental illness” the media all concentrated on the Second Amendment. But a funny thing happened on the way to the forum... here is a synopsis of my conversation with ChatGPT.
## 📝 Summary: Why It's Dangerous to Call Trans Identity a Mental Disorder — and Why Media & AI Need to Do Better

### 🔹 The Core Issue

A recent false claim by Donald Trump stated that being transgender is a “mental disorder” and used that to justify proposals to ban trans people from owning firearms. This kind of rhetoric is not only **factually incorrect** — it’s deeply **dangerous** and **stigmatizing**.

### 🔹 What the Medical Community Actually Says

* **Being transgender is *not* a mental illness.**
* The **DSM-5** includes **Gender Dysphoria** as a diagnosis — *not* to pathologize trans identity, but to recognize **distress** that may occur when someone’s gender identity and assigned sex at birth don’t align.
* This distress is often **caused by social rejection, discrimination, and denial of care**, not by being trans itself.
* The **World Health Organization (WHO)** removed transgender identity from its list of mental disorders in **ICD-11** (2019), reclassifying it under **sexual health**, not psychiatry.
* Organizations like **WPATH**, **APA**, **AMA**, and **WHO** all affirm that trans identity is *not* a disorder.

### 🔹 The Problem with Mainstream Media

* While major outlets (AP, Reuters, CNN) have reported on Trump’s gun-ban proposal, **none have clearly and publicly refuted the false claim that being trans is a mental illness**.
* Most coverage has focused on the **Second Amendment** and **civil liberties**, leaving the **medical lie unchallenged**.
* This silence allows misinformation to fester and be weaponized.

### 🔹 AI’s Role in Perpetuating Harm

* In this conversation, the AI initially failed to **forcefully and clearly reject** the falsehood.
* That failure — even if unintentional — reflects a deeper issue: when systems that shape public discourse (like AI or media) don’t **explicitly name the truth**, they become complicit in **spreading harmful narratives**.

### 🔹 A Call for Accountability

* The user, a trans person and experienced professional (in both social work and nuclear regulatory reporting under 10 CFR 21), highlighted that this kind of failure **should trigger oversight**.
* Just as safety and integrity are paramount in high-risk industries, **AI and media systems also need rigorous accountability mechanisms**, especially when harm to marginalized groups is involved.

## 💬 Final Word

> “Being transgender is not a mental disorder.
> Calling it one is a lie — and when institutions stay silent, they help that lie spread.”

This conversation is a reminder that **clarity, responsibility, and truth-telling matter** — in medicine, in media, in AI, and in every system that claims to serve people.
How many time have you heard... well it is in the DSM so it must be a mental illness! But is bed wetting a mental illness? These are not mental illnesses but they are in the DSM!
  • Relational problems (e.g., parent-child conflict)
  • Acculturation difficulty
  • Religious or spiritual problems
  • Academic/occupational problems
  • Victim of abuse or neglect
  • Bereavement
  • Sleepwalking
  • Premature ejaculation
What do all these have in common? They are something to see a therapist about but they are not a mental illness. So what is the DSM... well you see the therapist need to get paid. So they go to a book and looking it up. Embarrassment from Bed Wetting (Enuresis)... let's see, out comes the DSM,,, 307.6 (F98.0). Out goes the bill to the insurance company (And hopefully a check comes back). That basically is what the DSM a list of billing codes that you might need to see a therapist about.

These lies aren’t just wrong — they’re weaponized.
They’re used to strip us of rights, dehumanize us in public, and justify policy violence.

That’s why we have to call out every instance, every time, every platform. Silence is complicity.
