I was coming to a intersection two-lane road with dedicated bike lanes on both sides. The light was green and the car in front of me was making a right turn with his blinker light on. But to their right was the bike lane with a bicyclist was going straight but the car that was turning right in the right turn lane couldn't see the bicyclist approaching on the right in their blind spot.
The bicyclist who got cut off kicked the car back passenger door denting it!
So that got me wondering who has the Right-of-Way?
The bicyclist does.
And this is a recipe for disaster! It's not just a matter of who has the right of way; it's a design problem that creates a high potential for disaster. The kicker is that it is widely recognized by traffic safety experts as a dangerous setup.
The answer?
- Dedicated traffic signals for bicyclists.
- Signs for bicyclists that say, "Yield to turning cars."
- Allowing cars to merge into the bike lane before making a right turn.
Sadly I see deaths and injuries from this defective design.
