Living On A Sand Bar

Sixty miles out on the Atlantic the “No Left Turn” season is over, the summer crowds are dying out, this weekend is the last fling of summer there was a big inrush for the weekend. My neighbor came up with their two adult children for the weekend.

What I find amazing is the volume of cars going to the outer Cape… just where do they put the endless stream of cars from Friday morning until Saturday evening? The endless line of cars are amazing and then the tide goes out Monday and Tuesday, there is a mass migration off the Cape. Once again silence.

The prices are out of sight the farther out the Cape you go. The price of a hard roll on the mainland is 99¢ in Provincetown $1.29! Gas is about 40¢ more a gallon than back home! And it is not only the prices but also the availability, in the grocery store there is a whole lot less in the way of variety, the store brands are almost none existent. In P’town it looks like they did away with the butcher at the supermarket, the meats are all in vacuum packages.

I had some guest over last weekend and they wanted to know where the nearest Walmart was and I said, “It is one hour in that direction.” Target? “It is one hour in that direction.” Home Depot? “It is one hour in that direction. If traffic isn’t bad.” CVS? “Oh you are in luck, it is only 30 minutes in that direction or 20 minutes in the other direction… but there is no parking at the store.”

Life on the sand bar does have it advantages… you can sit alone on the beach now and watch the sunset.
