A Red Herring Or “Oh Look Over There, Not Behind The Curtain"

[Editorial]

The Republicans are good at creating red herrings. Meaning us the LGBTQ+ community.

Ask yourself what are the Republicans goals for the economy? What are their plans on rebuilding the infrastructure? You know, the crumbing highways? The antiquated water and sewer systems? But all we hear from them are… Crickets.

What are their plans to cut unemployment? We know that they are complain about the national debt but what are they going to do get people back to work. We know that they don’t want to have to hire gays or lesbians or us. But all we hear from them on their plan… Crickets.

We know that they are against abortion but what are they doing about feeding the babies? We know that they want to cut or block programs like Child Tax Credit, WIC, SNAP, school nutritional programs like school lunches, and Head Start. But on their plans for taking care for the children, all we hear from them are… Crickets.

It seems like every day we hear about a mass shooting somewhere in the country, Republicans states has the highest deaths from gun violence and they keep saying “Lock Em Up” but it seems like that only the Blacks get locked up and the Whites can walk around with loaded AR-16s. But all we hear from them about gun violence are… Crickets.

What are their plans to fix Social Security and Medicare? We know that from their tights lips that they want to raise the retirement age and cut Cost-of-Living increases, but all we hear from them about their plans are… Crickets.

We know that they are for “America-first agenda,” Faith in God, Sanctity of life, Individual responsibilities and initiatives, and Patriotism. We know that they want to put chaplains in schools in place of counselors. But how do they want to achieve those lofty goals we only heard… Crickets.

We heard them say the elections are rigged, but when we ask them for evidence all we hear are… Crickets. We see how they rigged the elections by gerrymandering voting districts, by cutting voting districts in minority districts, and by cutting voting hours making it harder to vote if you hold multiple jobs. We seen how they have tried to stop people from handing out water to those waiting for hours in lines to vote in the sweltering heat. We seen how they tried in Wisconsin to change the way the Constitution is amended.

We know that they have banned books, banned anything LGBTQ+, banned Black and minorities history, and sex education which is worst then hearing crickets from them.

We seen them trying to disenfranchise voters, they just don’t trust the voters to “vote the right way,” the party’s way.

What can we do?

Well the next time you hear a candidate say that we have save the unborn… ask them how we are going to save the children? We have to demand answers and not just vague generalizes. We have to hold their feet to the fire to get answers. Take to social media and ask for answers. Write letters-to-the-editor, talk to friends and co-workers. I don’t mean talk their ears off about politics but just comments like “that is so wrong” when they blame the LGBTQ+ community or a comment like “Yeah, like how are they going to do it?”

  1. Primary voting season is approaching. I highly recommend going to candidate events and asking serious questions. Many are entrenched in a particular party and are going to vote against a candidate and you think "Why go?" You go to ask the questions they do not want asked. Also, when you are handed the microphone do NOT give it up until the question is answered. Keep standing and hold onto the microphone and press the issue. Do not accept vague general answers. Don't let the person deflect from the question.

  2. Well the thing is, most of those type of events are passé. They have moved on to having warm up speakers to get the crowd riled up. They candidate comes in and makes their speech, waves to the audience, and leaves. They are then off to the next rally.

Most of the time when people do that, hold the microphone, the mike is cut, and security marches you out.

While house parties are usually by invitation, I have been to many of house parties and they are on friendly territory. That is you best bet to be able to talk to the candidates.

You want to make an impact? Write letters to the editors, send emails to the candidates but be civil, join you candidate’s party and volunteer. Not only do you help them out but you also show our flag. When I volunteered for Malloy’s campaign I was the trans person there and I was noticed.
Here’s a thought… run for office! More and more trans people are and they are winning.
