As A Member Of The Targeted Community

I am concerned, you think it can’t happen here in the northeast but hate is everywhere.
2 Men Stockpiled Guns and Far-Right Propaganda in New Jersey. Are They Alone?

NEWTON, N.J. — New Jersey investigators were looking into a routine complaint from a woman who said her ex-boyfriend was harassing her when they uncovered something far more dire: The 25-year-old man had stockpiled weapons and far-right propaganda and had talked about shooting up a hospital.

Two months later, New Jersey State Police responding to a crash in the same county discovered illegal assault weapons in the back seat of a van. Later, they found 17 more firearms, a grenade launcher and neo-Nazi paraphernalia in the driver’s home.

The arrests of the two men rocked law enforcement officials in Sussex County, raising fears that far-right extremism had crept into this sleepy, rural area in New Jersey.

It is impossible to know if the two arrests so close together are a fluke or signal of a growing white supremacist movement in the county, law enforcement officials said. The two men appear to have no connection to each other.
This is the scary part…
Law enforcement officials said neither of the men arrested in Suffolk County had contact with other white supremacists in the area. Instead, they appear to have been independently radicalized.

Gregory Mueller, an assistant prosecutor in Newton, New Jersey, said it is highly likely there are others with a similar ideology in Sussex County, but he is not sure how to find them. His investigators lack the expertise to ferret them out.
Here in Connecticut hate crimes are increasing, back in July I wrote about a church that was vandalized because it is pro-LGBTQ+ and here are some headlines from this month…

Hate is spreading.

The article goes on to say,
“I think the national rhetoric is not helping,” said Jared Maples, the director of the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security. “That discourse leads to people feeling disenfranchised and on the fringe and again, empowered, maybe, to make their voices heard about the hate that they kind of espouse and believe in.”
They feel that they are the persecuted. They have this warped sense of reality where their way of life is being attacked.

Just look at evangelical Christian, they feel that their religion is under attack because they “are being forced to accept gays” that this somehow prevents them from practicing their religion.

The Department of Homeland Security is starting to realize that they are domestic terrorists.
Department of Homeland Security strategy adds white supremacy to list of threats
Recent mass shootings have "galvanized the Department of Homeland Security to expand its counterterrorism mission focus beyond terrorists operating aboard," acting DHS Sec. Kevin McAleenan.

For the first time since it was formed after the 9/11 attacks, the Department of Homeland Security is adding white supremacist violence to its list of priority threats in a revised counterterrorism strategy issued Friday.

"The continuing menace of racially based violent extremism, particularly white supremacist extremism, is an abhorrent affront to our nation, the struggle and unity of its diverse population, and the core values of both our society and our department," said Kevin McAleenan, the acting Homeland secretary, in a speech at the Brookings Institute in Washington.

DHS is stepping up its focus on what McAleenan called "targeted violence," in which an attacker selects the target in advance, driven by hate. Racism and anti-Semitism have fueled recent attacks on African-American churches, synagogues, and public places in California and Texas, he said.
What can we do?

Well first off as the ad campaign says if you see something suspicious report it.

As my friend Robin says “If you hear mean, intervene.”

Third, don’t vote for candidates who run on a hate platform, candidates who are anti-immigrants, anti-Muslim, anti-abortion, or anti-LGBTQ+. Don’t fall for the carrot on the stick… they say that they will cut taxes or are against tolls but the first bill that they introduce are usually anti-abortion, or anti-LGBTQ+.

Lastly like the musical South Pacific song "You've Got To Be Carefully Taught" set a good example to your children don’t teach your children to hate. Don’t teach them to hate people who are different.

  1. Your country is going to get worse before it gets better and with Chump in the white house fanning the hatred even getting him out will have repercussions with far right extremists. The two party system is the worst thing for this type of situation.

  2. The sad thing is: these attitudes have always existed in a lot of people, but until recently they were loathe to express them openly, and even most of them had at least one foot grounded in reality. Now, thanks to the Internet, which facilitates withdrawing into a self-protecting cocoon in which base beliefs are reinforced and never is heard an opposing word, and a charismatic political leader exploiting and encouraging their fear, hate and bigotry, it`s all coming out in the open now.

Unfortunately, if you've any inkling of how the human brain works, you know that most human's brains are not well-suited for rational, dispassionate thought. Our memories and perception play tricks on us and are easily manipulated. We are prone to a litany of logical fallacies and biases. And the more our beliefs are threatened, the more we paint ourselves into a corner, and the more ingrained those beliefs tend to become. There is no way to deal rationally with these haters that do not accept reality and live in their own inner world; the more facts you throw at them, the more tenaciously they cling to their irrational beliefs.

Not only do I not know what we can do, I'm more and more pessimistic that anything CAN be done to counter this trend. History shows that these sorts of cataclysmic societal shifts usually do not end well. They more often lead to violence, bloodshed and a lot of suffering. What is happening now is VERY similar to what happened in Germany in the 1930s. (As Mark Twain noted, "History does not repeat itself. But it DOES rhyme.")

And voting Trump out in 2020 is not the answer. No matter how legitimate the election may end up being, if Trump loses, his disciples will almost certainly not accept the results, encouraged by their leader's constant disparaging and demonizing the Left as their enemies. I expect to see more and more violence against progressive, liberal, non-white, non-Christian individuals, groups and institutions. The Donald will certainly assert that there is a "coup" to undermine his presidency, and it is not too far-fetched to believe that he will try to declare the election invalid and remain in office under some contrived emergency "powers" that the cowardly GOP and Trump's handpicked Lunatic Right judges will bless.

Even if we dodge that bullet, and Trump leaves office quietly, we will still have to deal with all those aggrieved Trumpheads, and a judiciary thoroughly infected with "appointed for life" judges who want to tear up the Constitution, and lead America to a "promised land" in which wealthy white men can once again safely take their perceived rightful leadership over the rest of us; where wealth is protected, the poor die off quickly, LGBTQ people, immigrants and people of color are at least marginalized, if not outright eliminated, and the One True Religion (TM) prevails.

    1. Published yesterday, this Salon article makes some of these same points, only much more cogently.
