This Has Been Something I Noticed

As more and more cities start charging for parades and street fairs because of budget shortages pride organizations are turning towards corporate sponsors but sponsors always want something in return.

New York City might have two pride marches this year, the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots.

For the past 20 years, pride in New York has been organized by Heritage of Pride (HOP). The organization has faced criticism in past years for the presence of corporate floats and campaigning politicians, the presence of uniformed police officers, and restrictions like metal barricades on the route and requiring anyone participating to have a wrist band.

So this year another group, the Reclaim Pride Coalition (RPC), has asked the city for a permit host a different march.

“Eschewing the corporate-saturated, highly policed nature of recent parades, the March is a truly grassroots action that mobilizes the community to address the many social and political battles that continue to be fought locally, nationally, and globally,” reads an RPC press release.
Well first off… Shame, shame, shame on LGBTQ Nation… Riot?
A riot is according to Merriam-Webster dictionary is,
2a : public violence, tumult, or disorder
b : a violent public disorder
specifically : a tumultuous disturbance of the public peace by three or more persons assembled together and acting with a common intent
When you are fighting for your human rights you are rebelling or a uprising not a riot. A riot is what the oppressor calls it!

The original Pride is using wrist bans which means you will have to march with a group, you will not be able to just join in the march.

I am mixed on corporate sponsors; it all depends upon what they want in return. If their logos are plastered all over the place… then no, however, if their logos are discretely posted in a limited numer of places then yes.

The Trans Health and Law conference couldn’t keep the registration fee low if it wasn’t for corporate sponsor. There is one slide in the opening slide show thanking them and also their ad is in the conference program guide.

What do you think?
