Connecticut Women’s March 2019

Today I had the honor of speaking at the Connecticut Women's March and Rally, here is my speech...

This has been an amazing year… we won elections all around the country and have put more women in office than ever before!

Here in Connecticut we elected five new women legislators to the state office, ousting two long term Republicans and one of them was anti-women rights Senator Suzio. All total there were 29 women running for office here in Connecticut

Nationally it was a fantastic year! We kept the Fifth District with the election of Jahana Hayes and over all 92 women were elected to the House and 10 women to the Senate.

While down in Texas something amazing happened, in Harris County they elected all 19 black women judges!

Can you imagine that? 

And it is not just women getting elected there has been such a great upswing in the election of people of differing genders, religions, and ethnicities have been elected. 

Just one example is how many people of trans experience have been elected this year! The voters chose to vote for the best candidate and didn't let the fear sway them.

In New Hampshire two trans women were elected to state office, and all around the country something like four or five trans candidates won office!

Next door in Massachusetts they had Question 3 on their ballot where our human rights were voted on, the ballot question was whether trans could go out in public without being harassed or discriminated against.

If it did not pass trans people could be thrown out of restaurants, movie theaters, we could be shut out of Fenway Park or Gillette Stadium.

But the good people of Massachusetts saw beyond the hate that the opposition spewed out and the voters passed the ballot question in favor of our rights, not by a narrow margin but by a vote of 67%!

By two thirds! 

Think about that… two thirds many who don’t even know a trans person voted for us! Voted for inclusion rather than exclusion.

Two thirds of the voters said no to hate.

The voters did not want the hate and prejudices that was being peddled by the opposition.

Over in New York after 17 years they finally passed the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act!

Why did it pass now and not in the last 17 years?

Because for the first time in 43 years the Democrats took control of the state Senate in part because of the women’s effort to get out the vote. 


Nationally the voters wanted change, they wanted to throw out the “old boys club” and bring in fresh ideas.

The voters said ENOUGH!

We need to keep up the pressure, we cannot let our guard down because the boy’s club is going for the jugular, they want blood and it is our blood that they want.

In Michigan and Wisconsin the voters threw out the Republican governors and elected Democratic governors but the Republican controlled the legislature and they striped the governor’s powers thwarting the will of the voters.

In Missouri voters approved a constitutional amendment to change how the state draws legislative boundaries, banning gerrymandering but the Republican controlled legislature is thumbing their nose at the voters and ignoring the referendum. 

We have to end the “old boys club!”

We have to break up their grip on power.

We need universal healthcare for all!

We need an education system that doesn’t bankrupt us; we need free education through college or through technical schools.

We need universal daycare because now one parent can no longer afford stay home; both parents need a job just to get by.

We need a living wage.

Some say this socialism I say it is what our Constitution says in the Preamble…

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare… 

What could be more in promoting the general welfare than universal healthcare, education for all, and to have a living wage?

What we need is to have more women run for offices, not just state and federal but also in the towns where we live. We need to run in the primaries and get on the ballot. We need to help those who are running for office, we need to go door to door, we have to write letters-to-the-editors and not let any negative letter-to-the-editor go unchallenged!

We have to take back our government!

The opposition has seen what we can do and they are afraid of us! We cannot let them drive wedge issues and trying to divide us.

They saw that we elected the most diverse House ever and the “old boys club” is scared, they want to hang onto their power so they want to fracture us.

We cannot let the troll stir up doubt and bigotry, we have to stand together, united as one!

Onto 2020 and taking back control of the presidency and the senate to end this time of madness

  1. Wasn't that amazing, that 19 black women were made judges! When I saw that I just knew Hell had frozen over..... hehe

    This is just an amazing post! And yes, isn't it amazing what has happened... you just have to pinch yourself sometimes, and we can never forget that it happened, here, and right now!
