HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A transgender student at Marina High School in Huntington Beach is vying to become the school’s Homecoming Queen.

CBS2′s Stacey Butler spoke to Cassidy Lynn Campbell  Friday.

“I’m so excited for tonight,” said Campbell, 16, referring to a back-to-school dance.

These days, Campbell has nothing but excitement as the majority of students have embraced her being transgender. To many, it’s no big deal.

“Yesterday at school during 4th period the announcements came on to name the official top ten [nominees] and I was one of them. I was like, ‘Oh my gosh! Are you serious? I actually got it?’” said Campbell. She told Butler she’s always known she was a girl despite being born a boy.
Did you get that? She is one of the top ten finalists! The kids don’t care that she is transgender and have voted for her to become one of the finalists for homecoming queen. The election is September 20th.

She is not the first trans-student to run for homecoming queen, some of them have won and some have lost. But you know what the world didn’t come to an end when a trans-student was elected.

In Texas a North Dallas high school principal blocked a trans-student from running for homecoming queen saying “You are a male and males can run for king, not queen” even though she had the backing of many of the students and shouldn’t it be the students who decide who they want for their homecoming queen?
