Questions:
Why is it that the White House said he had a gun?
Why is it the the videos shows he has his cellphone in one hand and the other hand has nothing in it. But the White House said he was holding a gun?
In videos, Alex Pretti does not appear to wield a gun prior to being shot and killed by federal officers.Eduardo CuevasUSA TODAYJan. 24, 2026Several bystanders recorded a Border Patrol agent fatally shooting a 37-year-old Minneapolis man on Jan. 24.Videos show the deadly encounter in South Minneapolis at about 9:05 a.m. between several agents and Alex Pretti, a registered nurse. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said the man approached Border Patrol agents with a handgun, and agents tried to disarm him.“The officers attempted to disarm the suspect but the armed suspect violently resisted. ... Fearing for his life and the lives and safety of fellow officers, an agent fired defensive shots.” Tricia McLaughlin, DHS assistant secretary for public affairs, said in a statement.
BUT....
One video with a clear view of the encounter shows an officer shoving a person near Pretti shortly before the shooting.Pretti steps between them, and the officer sprays him with a substance. More officers approach and wrestle Pretti to the ground, striking him repeatedly.[...]An officer shoves a person next to Pretti. Pretti steps between them, holding his hands up as the officer sprays a substance toward his face. Pretti appears to be holding his phone in his right hand, and his left hand is empty.Several more officers surround Pretti, bringing him to the ground near the curb as they hit him repeatedly.
The video directly contradicts the White House statements!
Federal officials said Alex Pretti, 37, “approached” officers with a handgun and intended to kill them. Videos don’t appear to show Pretti with a firearm in his hand before he was shot.NBC NewsBy Frank Matt and Jon SchuppeJanuary 25, 2026Eyewitness videos showing at least one federal agent shooting and killing Alex Pretti, 37, in Minneapolis appear to counter the Trump administration’s description of events, presenting two starkly different narratives.Shortly after the shooting, federal officials said agents had acted in self-defense during a violent altercation Saturday morning. Pretti “approached U.S. Border Patrol officers with a 9-millimeter semi-automatic handgun,” DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said, adding officers “attempted to disarm” him and he “violently resisted.” President Donald Trump shared a picture of what he said was “the gunman’s gun, loaded (with two additional full magazines!), and ready to go.” White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller said Pretti “tried to assassinate federal law enforcement.”
The video appears to contradict the “violently resisted” that the White House says, he is not resisting until he is tackled by ICE agents, that is when he struggles.
But at least four different videos of the encounter — filmed by eyewitnesses and verified and analyzed by NBC News — run counter to some of the administration’s statements. The videos do not appear to show Pretti holding a weapon during the skirmish that led to his death. The footage shows him coming to the aid of a person federal agents pushed before the encounter. And some of the video shows a federal agent appearing to reach into the skirmish near Pretti and remove a gun that looked like Pretti’s shortly before he was shot. Bovino and Noem said the situation was under investigation. Pretti was a nurse and had a permit to carry a gun, local officials said. The videos, shot by witnesses from different vantage points — in the street, in a shop and in a car — show Pretti holding a phone when he and officers began to tussle. Noem declined to say if Pretti pulled out a gun before he was shot.
So where does the idiocy come in? "... at least four different videos of the encounter — filmed by eyewitnesses and verified and analyzed..." In this day of age you know that everyone will have their cellphone cameras out and they will be caught in the lies!
The city of Minneapolis writes:
City leaders respond to third shooting by federal agentsEarlier today, City leaders expressed outrage at the fear and degradation of public safety, and loss of life being created by thousands of federal agents in Minneapolis. They also urged community members to continue to prioritize safety for all and engage in peaceful protest.“We ask that the Trump administration and the invasion of federal agents get out of our City. How many more people have to die?” said Mayor Jacob Frey. “I hope they are reflecting right now. What are these actions accomplishing? Stand up for America because right now you’re tearing us apart.”Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said the department has been in touch with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security but has not received much information. MPD confirms the 37-year-old man was shot near 26th St. W and Nicollet Ave by federal agents. He was then transported to Hennepin County Medical Center where police say he died.O’Hara said an MPD command post has been established, and the Minnesota State Patrol and other Twin Cities area law enforcement are on standby for any help needed. Twin Cities law enforcement is assisting the MPD to respond to 911 calls in the city.“Our demand today is for federal agents in our City to act with the discipline and integrity we expect of our own officers every day,” said O’Hara. “We know there’s a lot of anger, but we also ask our community to be peaceful while we work through the details of this tragedy.”Minneapolis Emergency Management Director Rachel Sayre, with extensive experience in international emergency operations in countries like Syria and Yemen, said events like this have a “lasting, generational impact” on families in the community.“In these times, we see the best and worst – the worst being the terror and fear in families all over Minneapolis who are scared to go to the grocery store or school,” she said. “But the best by far is the community’s peaceful response right now and care for their neighbors. In addition, our City staff is working around the clock to make sure we provide resources available.”The City’s website has various resources for food and rental assistance, legal resources, and resources for health matters, among other critical needs.
