Tick, Tock... Tick, Tock

The clock is ticking... 20 more days! Tick, tock, tick tock!

Donald Trump has taken to boasting about his decision to deploy federal soldiers and agents on the streets of Washington, despite the unease the measure has generated among residents. The Republican, who adopted the measure 10 days ago citing an alleged escalation of violence, went to the headquarters of the deployment to greet soldiers and police officers. “We’re going to make it safe, and we’re going to then go on to other places, but we’re going to stay here for a while,” the president said. The legislation allows the president to maintain this measure for 30 days, but Trump says he is considering extending it.

Trump maintains that since issuing the order on August 7, Washington has become “perhaps the safest city in the country, and it’s getting better by the minute.” He says that until now, the capital — a tourist magnet thanks to its free monuments and museums — was a wasteland that many avoided, but now “people are flocking back.”
Um... I think it is the other way around! AP News reported,
The main drag in Washington’s Columbia Heights neighborhood is typically crammed with people peddling pupusas, fresh fruit, souvenirs and clothing. On Tuesday, though, things felt different: The white tents that bulge with food and merchandise were scarcer than usual.

“Everything has stopped over the last week,” said Yassin Yahyaoui, who sells jewelry and glass figurines. Most of his customers and fellow vendors, he said, have “just disappeared” — particularly if they speak Spanish.

The abnormally quiet street was one of many pieces of evidence showing how President Donald Trump ‘s decision to flood the nation’s capital with federal law enforcement and immigration agents has rippled through the city. While troop deployments and foot patrols in downtown areas and around the National Mall have gotten the most attention, life in historically diverse neighborhoods like Columbia Heights is being reshaped as well.
But hey, this is Trump saying it... so we know how actuate he can be. But back to the clock ticking!

El Pais ends with...
A poll published by The Washington Post found that 79% of residents oppose the presidential order, while only 17% support it. Only 31% consider the crime rate to be serious or very serious, while 21% consider the streets in their neighborhoods to be unsafe. In contrast, 78% say they feel reasonably or very secure in their areas of residence. Two-thirds of the population say the police and military presence makes them feel less safe.
So it will all boil down to this:
Will Congress stand up to Trump?
Will Trump stay in DC against the law?
Will Congress say no?
So stay tuned—for the final test of power, principle, and the rule of law!

President Donald Trump issued a warning that a “complete and total federal takeover of the city” could take place if Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser continues to share, what he claims are, “false and highly inaccurate crime figures.”

“Washington, D.C. is safe again. The crowds are coming back, the spirit is high, and our D.C. National Guard and police are doing a fantastic job. They are out in force, and are not playing games,” said Trump via Truth Social in the early hours of Friday morning. “As bad as it sounds to say, there were no murders this week for the first time in memory.”

Trump, who had earlier paid a visit to the police and military on-guard in D.C., went on to say that Bowser must “immediately stop” publishing the reports or “bad things will happen,” such as a complete federal takeover.
Once again, District of Columbia Home Rule Act, Section 740, that allows the president to requisition the services of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) during a declared emergency. The Home Rule Act does not give the President the power to oust the city's elected leadership or assume control of all city functions.
