Saturday 9: Joanna (1983)
On Saturdays I take a break from the heavy stuff and have some fun…
Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love to answer the questions, however, and here is today's questions!
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
1) The subject of this week's song, Joanna, is described as someone who never lets you down and can always be counted upon. Who in your life is like that?
My brother, he is always there for me.
2) Kool and the Gang vocalist James "J. T." Taylor sings that he will do his best to do what's right for her. Reflect on the last week. What did you devote special effort to?
Trying to organize a meeting with a legislator to see about passing legislation banning book bannings.
3) This video was filmed at the Colonial Diner in Lyndhurst, NJ. Still open 40 years later, the Colonial is known for their Boom Boom Shrimp, aka fried shrimp in sweet chili sauce. Think of your favorite local restaurant. What menu item would recommend?
Well here or the Cape?
The Cape, the Lobster Pot in Provincetown.
Here: The Blue Lobster,
Hmm… do you see a theme here?
4) Kool and the Gang's biggest hit was 1980's "Celebration," which is popular today with disc jockeys at wedding receptions. Are you likely to get up and dance at a wedding reception? Or would we find you enjoying the party from your seat?
From my seat and that brings me to a pet peeve… I wish the bands do play loud. Most of the people haven’t seen each other in years and just want to talk with relatives who I haven't seen since the last wedding or funeral.
5) Kool and the Gang are proud of their NJ roots. Group founder Robert Bell was given the nickname "Kool" by his Jersey City friends because he was so "laid back." Do you think your friends would describe you as "laid back?"
Yes.
6) One of the Jersey City's biggest employers is Evergreen, a transportation and shipping company with offices in Evertrust Plaza, a high-rise near the waterfront. What is the tallest building you've ever been in? Were you there for business, or to enjoy the view?
Well when I was little it was the Empire State Building, in the past twenty years it was a law office in New Haven (We were there to discuss plans to pass another bill.) and yes you could see Long Island Sound from the mahogany paneling and the plush leather oversize chairs office. Sitting in the meeting all you could see around you was $$$$.
7) In 1983, when "Joanna" topped the charts, Vanessa Williams became the first African American to be crowned Miss America. Today, Miss America is still among the most popular televised pageants, along with Miss World and Miss Universe. Do you watch beauty pageants?
Nope! Never have and never will.
8) Also in 1983, superstars Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson joined forces for the #1 song, "Say, Say, Say." Each man began his career as part of a group but went on to have success on his own. Can you think of anyone else who started out in band or group but also scored as a solo artist?
Linda Ronstadt, she started out in the Stone Ponies.
9) Random question: Have you more recently eaten bread sticks or carrot sticks?
Neither.
Hold it, hold it! Now that think about it was at Christmas I had carrot sticks and pepper strips.
Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend!
#4 I hate it to go out to eat and there is canned music blasting throughout the restaurant. I always ask if there is a section where there is no loud music so we can visit or if they can turn down the music. If not it's a goodbye.
ReplyDeleteI would never describe you as laid back. You are out there every day and have been for years fighting for the community. Every day you have a posting informing us of what is happening. I hope a number of young folks will join you in the organizing of "banning the banning of books in Connecticut." If everyone were as "laid back" as you my goodness just think where we all would be. More than likely living in a new world of justice and liberation. Thanks Diana.
You had me at...lobster pot. That is a favorite of mine and something we don't ever see around here these days. The restaurants that offered it have either stopped or aren't there anymore.
ReplyDeleteLegislation to ban book bannings sounds like a fine idea! I hope you're successful.
ReplyDeleteVer, do you like lobster?🤣🤣🤣
ReplyDeleteI love lobster! Oh yes, Linda. She later went on to do Canciones de Mi padre with a Mariachi band. We were able to see their performance in the 1980's. She was able to share the songs of her father. Her album got a Grammy for it in 2001. Sad that she got sick and stopped performing.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the book ban ban.
