So brands partnering with trans influencers and supporting trans rights have “made the calculations,” as Matthew Berman, the chief executive of the Emerald Digital marketing company, recently told MarketWatch. And they expect a payoff over time by being more inclusive.
That’s why companies like Hershey HSY , which also caught flack last month after its Canadian division featured a trans woman as part of an ad campaign, will continue working with transgender models.
In fact, marketing expert Thomas Donohoe, author of “The CEO’s Digital Marketing Playbook,” told MarketWatch that “in 20 years, concerns like this [backlash to promoting a trans activist] are going to be laughed at.”
