“Danger, Will Robinson, danger!”

There is a right-wing film crew continues to try and trick trans activists into making an anti-trans documentary video. I know that CT TransAdvocacy Coalition received a request to be interviewed for a documentary whether it was for this one I don’t know, the email went into the recycle bin. But it was also on the WPATH listserv… “I received a message from a documentary filmmaker who is reportedly making a film called "Born into the Wrong Body" asking if I would like to participate as a provider.”

Conservative film crew continues to try and trick trans activists into appearing in mysterious documentary, Miss Nevada USA says

  • Eli Erlick accused Matt Walsh last week of trying to trick trans activists into appearing in a documentary.
  • Miss Nevada USA Kataluna Enriquez told Insider on Monday that she was recruited for the documentary too.
  • Enriquez says she last spoke to the crew on Saturday, meaning they continued to try and recruit activists after being exposed last week.

A film crew with ties to a conservative podcaster, that was accused last week of trying to lure trans activists into appearing in a documentary, is continuing to set up interviews with others in the community, Insider has learned.

Last week, trans activist Eli Erlick posted a Twitter thread explaining how she had been recruited to take part in a documentary being produced by a mysterious group called the Gender Unity Project.

After doing some digging into the documentary, Erlick learned that the producer she had been speaking with, Makenna Lynn, appeared to work for conservative podcaster Matt Walsh. Neither Walsh nor Lynn responded to Insider's requests for comment.

Walsh has frequently spoken negatively about the trans community, saying people shouldn't be able to choose their own gender pronouns and that parents who are supportive of their children transitioning are committing a "deranged" form of "child abuse."

Warning!

I always make sure that the people are LGBTQ friendly before I say yes. The major networks are usually okay, the same goes for LGBTQ+ media but others do your research before saying yes. I wrote some tips about doing interviews,

Tips For Being Interviewed By The Media

  • Don’t do it!
  • If you do, think of sound bites (7 or 8 seconds). Once when I was lobbying for ENDA down in Washington DC I gave a five minute interview and all they used was one sentence “I don’t think it will pass this year, I think we are in it for the long haul.” And they called me a “seasoned professional” which I got a chuckle out of since that was the first time I lobbied.
  • (Corollary to #2) Be prepared for them to use your statement out of context in the worst possible way.
  • Know what key words not to use and how to spin a negative question positively (Why do you think that the “bathroom bill” should pass?”*)
  • Remember most people probably do not know the issues you are being interviewed about, so keep the explanation basic… “Lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and trans people face discrimination everyday which is why...”
  • Don’t use abbreviations (see above), you might know what they mean but others do not.
  • You might want to talk to the reporter beforehand an mention the “AP Style Sheet” or GLAAD Media Guide for the correct use of pronouns.
  • And above all, realize that you are going to be stopped on the street and told “I saw you on the news last night!” That happened to me after I gave an interview; the clerk at the deli said that to me.
  • Also be aware that they may use your photos or video for other stories. They may use a picture of you walking in the background as they are talking about a trans person who committed a crime.

*Don’t answer that question! A better answer to that question is... The anti-discrimination bill is important because it protect all transgender people from discrimination in employment, housing, credit and public accommodation.
