Saturday 9: A HARD DAY'S NIGHT

Sam’s Saturday 9: A HARD DAY'S NIGHT (1964)

Ida hit the Cape with tornadoes! A long sleepless night that you can read about it here.

On Saturdays I take a break from the heavy stuff and have some fun…

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) John Lennon sings that he's been working like a dog. What's the hardest job you've ever had? What made it so difficult?
A summer job where I had to load and unload trailer trucks, the heat and humidity made it unbearable inside the trailer.

2) Despite the hard work, he likes his life and asks, "So why on earth should I moan?" What's the last thing you complained about? Who were you talking to?
I am always complaining about something and I don’t remember the last time.

3) John was raised by his Aunt Mimi. She meant well when she told the teen-aged John, "The guitar's all right, but you'll never make a living out of it." What's the worst advice you've ever received?
I never thought about the worst advice before. I think I just nodded my head and forgot about it… with a yeah right, a nod and then I ignored it.

4) This week's song was cowritten and also sung with Paul McCartney. Paul's father was more supportive of the lads' show business aspirations than Aunt Mimi was, but he still worried that his son wouldn't be able fully support himself as a musician. To please his dad, 17-year-old Paul worked over the Christmas holiday season as the "second man" on a delivery truck. Paul would be the one to hop off the truck and drop off the packages while the driver could keep the motor running and the heat on. Where was the last package you received from? (Extra points if you share what was in it.)
Amazon and it was a USB C to HDMI Cable, I am trying to show my powerpoint using my phone.

5) After Christmas was over, Dad insisted Paul get a full-time, year-around job. He ended up at a factory, winding heavy coils to be used in electric motors. He hated the work but enjoyed the lunch hours, eating jam sandwiches and, weather permitting, kicking a soccer ball around the yard with his coworkers. What's for lunch at your house today?
Italian subs from Eastham Superette. They make good subs and they also have good meats

6) In early March 1961, the Beatles accepted a booking to play lunch hour gigs at Liverpool's Cavern Club, and so February 28, after less than two full months, Paul said goodbye to factory work. What's the shortest you ever stayed at a job?
The summer. I never quit a job just because I didn't like it, I only left for a better job or they went bankrupt.

7) Enough about these Brits! Labor Day was introduced to celebrate the achievements of the American worker. How many different employers have you had?
Not counting summer jobs (they were different jobs each year.) my first fill-time job was with Pioneer Medical (they went bankrupt), Allied Control (they got bought out and I jumped ship before they closed), and my last paying job was with Electro Mechanics for 28 years (we were bought out five times and the last time they closed the factory.), and I do have a non-paying job as the executive director of a non-profit).

8) This weekend may offer a golden opportunity for napping and sleeping in. Do you snore?
Well since I sleep alone I have no idea.

9) Labor Day traditionally marks the beginning of the new school year. When she was a kid, Samantha was crazy for her brand new box of 96 Crayola Crayons. It even had a sharpener in the back! What do you remember about preparing to go back to school? If you're an educator, let us know how you get the classroom ready for the kids.
Well I avoided school at all cost. On my first day of school I literally had to be dragged to school, I grabbed on every sign, every telephone pole to avoid going to school. I hated school up to grad school.

I will try to answer your comments but I have company at the cottage for the long weekend.

  1. I haven't had a sub in forever! Maybe that's how I should celebrate Labor Day.

  2. Italian subs--oh, man, I had some amazing ones in Boston. I would LOVE one of those right now.

  3. It seems like we all either get food or some type of office supply from Amazon...no cool new items. Oh my, it's quite an achievement that you went all the way through grad school when you hated it so much. Most kids would not make it that far.

  6. Company at the cottage. Well tell them to sneak in your bedroom to listen if you snore, then we will all know.
My first and hardest job was working in a fish net factory, pulling untreated nets through hot tar and some other solution. Then I went outside and spun this big drying wheel so the nets would dry. $1.25 cents a hour. But with the money I made all week and after giving my mom some, off to NYC I went to explore my gayness and other things. Be well and safe and enjoy the sub for me.

  7. I had to laugh at the story of your going to school the first time. I had a son who hated school that much. I'm feeling sorry for your mother.

  8. I can just picture you hanging on to whatever. My husband said he was like that too. I was scared my first day at Kinder but that's all. The little social butterfly in me was happy!
