Gazing into my crystal ball I foresee a lousy year for us. I foresee the Republicans going full court press out against us to prove how tough they are against us. I foresee us having to go to the Supreme Court for our Human Rights and I can’t even guess how they will rule.

Anti-trans politicians will undoubtedly be busy once again this year, but LGBTQ+ activists and advocates have no plans to back down.

After a year of legislation that relentlessly targeted LGBTQ+ Americans, the community is already facing another potentially record-breaking legislative session in 2024. More than 500 bills were put forward in 2023 seeking to restrict rights and protections for queer and trans people, in arenas from public restroom access to gender-affirming health care, and LGBTQ+ advocates do not expect that historic pace to slow down with a presidential election on the horizon. If re-elected to the White House, former President Donald Trump has already floated a federal transition ban — pledging that, on day one, he will sign an “executive order instructing every federal agency to cease the promotion of sex or gender transition at any age.”

My theory on to why Trump dislikes us so much dates back when the courts were about to order to include us in Canada in 2012 us in the pageant. I think his macho facade was terrified that he might have the “hots” for a trans woman.

While no one can be certain what state legislatures are cooking up next year, experts say the political calendar has already started to take shape. Erin Reed, an independent journalist who covers anti-LGBTQ+ legislation across the country, says that observers are beginning to get an understanding of what 2024 holds from Republican bills pre-filed before the next wave of legislative sessions even starts. Missouri Republicans have pre-filed more than 20 bills targeting LGBTQ+ rights in advance of the 2024 legislative session, including legislation that would allow teachers to refuse using trans students’ pronouns and shield doctors sued for refusing to provide gender-affirming care. Lawmakers in New Hampshire and South Carolina have already begun filing their own bills; a pre-filed bill in South Carolina would make the state just the second to impose criminal penalties for trans people who use bathrooms that align with their gender.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch wrote about the law,

The legislation is a sign that conservatives targeting LGBTQ issues are emboldened and will look to build upon last session, when lawmakers passed legislation banning gender-affirming care for minors and barring transgender athletes from playing in sports that match their gender identity.

One target for lawmakers appears to be removing the expiration date from the gender-affirming care ban and a grandfather clause that allowed minors to continue hormone therapy or puberty blockers if they were already prescribed them — even as many clinics across the state have already stopped providing this care to minors.

Another focus for some Republicans will be blocking or controlling discussions of LGBTQ issues and sexuality in the classroom. Legislation filed by state Sen. Rick Brattin, a Harrisonville Republican, for example, would ban classroom discussions on gender identity or sexual orientation for students in kindergarten through third grade.

Brattin’s bill appears similar to Florida’s controversial “Don’t Say Gay” law that was enacted last year. Opponents have said this type of legislation creates a chilling effect on teachers and LGBTQ students, barring kids from mentioning their LGBTQ family members and loved ones.

Fischer also pointed to another bill from Hudson that purports to ban colleges from “discriminating against a religious student association.” However, Fischer said this bill is written in a way that would allow religious associations to discriminate against LGBTQ students who wish to join.

Another bill from state Rep. Mazzie Christensen, a Hamilton Republican, would allow the state to cut funding from libraries “that offer obscene materials to children.” The bill appears to build on a similarly worded rule from Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft, a Republican candidate for governor in 2024, that went into effect in May.

“These bills are about protecting children and the fact that anyone would oppose these commonsense measures is absolutely disturbing,” Christensen said in a statement.

They don’t want the children to get the wrong idea, we want to control these little kids to make them in to card carrying Republicans.

But it is not just “Save the Children” that they are going after also adults. Them said…

Other states have likewise begun restricting care to adults: In Missouri, Attorney General Andrew Bailey issued an “emergency rule” in April placing onerous and burdensome restrictions on trans health care for patients of all ages. And Florida’s own trans medical care ban, which was signed into law in May, has compromised providers’ abilities to provide gender-affirming care to any patient. It requires all gender-affirming care to be administered in person (with telehealth is no longer allowed) and by a physician only. That prohibits nurse practitioners, who provide the vast majority of trans health care in the state, from providing transition-related care

If Republicans are poised to expand trans health care restrictions in 2024, Branstetter says it’s part of a trend of GOP lawmakers attempting to get the “biggest bang for their buck.” She points to another bill likely to be imitated in 2024: Kansas’ so-called “Women’s Bill of Rights,” which rewrote the state’s definition of sex as defined solely by a person’s reproductive biology at birth. That move led the Kansas Department of Health to stop correcting trans people’s birth certificates and the state’s attorney general, Kris Kobach, to attempt to block gender marker updates on driver’s licenses.

It is going to be a really bad year for us!

I mean a bad year with the Republicans posturing to show how tough they are against us, us who are only 0.5% of the population! I even foresee here in Connecticut more anti-trans bill proposed by the Republicans.

How Would You Within The Limits Of The Constitution…

Stop the bias crimes against Palestinians and Jews? I am not talking about the war but rather the results of that war here. I mean that threats against synagogues and the violence directed at Palestinians.

The Guardian reported in October that,

Police in New York are investigating at least three incidents targeting Palestinians and Jews in the city amid heightened tensions around the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

A series of attacks and threats were reported across the city on Wednesday night. Earlier this week mayor Eric Adams said that New York police were on “high alert” for potential violence inspired by the latest Middle Eastern conflict.

And in Philadelphia WHYY reported,

A possible hate crime is under investigation after a suspect was caught on camera vandalizing a mosque in West Philadelphia.

When members of Masjid Al-Jamia in West Philadelphia went to pray Friday morning, they were met with vandalism outside.

And USA Today reported…

Authorities continue to investigate after a swatting spree targeted almost 200 Jewish institutions across the country over the weekend with fake bomb threats.

A total of 199 swatting incidents and false bomb threats were tracked between Friday and Saturday evening by the Secure Community Network, a nonprofit that dedicates itself to the safety of the Jewish community in North America. The organization tracked the swatting spree across multiple states, including 93 in California, 62 in Arizona, 15 in Connecticut, five in Colorado, and four in Washington state, according to a press release.

I’m serious… How do you think we can end these bias crimes here?

I am on the Governor's Hate Crime Advisory Council and I'm looking for positive suggestions on steps we can take to end the terrorism here in the U.S. I’m stumped and looking for ideas.

Bias crimes had become an epidemic.

Now I am not talking about peaceful protests by either pro-Palestine or pro-Israeli protesters. What I am talking about is threats made to religious organizations or individuals.

When the Republicans questioned the ivy league college about the protests they questioned the college presidents about the protests. According to the Hill,

The House is set to vote Wednesday on a bipartisan resolution condemning the congressional testimony of three university presidents at a hearing last week that centered on the rise of antisemitism on college campuses.

“This is not a partisan issue but a question of moral clarity,” Stefanik wrote in a press release introducing the resolution. “Which is why our colleagues from across the aisle have come together with us to introduce a resolution condemning antisemitism on university campuses as well as the morally bankrupt testimonies of the University Presidents from Harvard, [University of Pennsylvania], and MIT during last week’s House Committee on Education and the Workforce hearing.”

The college presidents were right, the Republicans are wrong.

There is a little thing call the Constitution and in the Constitution there is a little thing call the First Amendment that the Republicans keep forgetting about.

A little lessons of the 1^st Amendment here, no matter how vile, no matter how disgusting the Constitution protects them. You remember last two drunk students were walking through a parking lot on UConn’s campus yell vile racist anti-Black speech? They were arrested on bias crimes charges well they were all thrown out and the students are suing UConn for violating the First Amendment.

The same thing is true for anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim protests, as long as they don’t promote violence and are peaceful they are legal.

So what would you do to end bias crimes? What would you do to end the violence here? If you had the ear of the governor what would you tell him?

Douglas S. Lavine: Understanding the difference between illegal hate crime and lawful hate speech

It is no surprise that many people don’t understand the difference between an illegal hate crime and lawful hate speech. Under state law and usage, they are entirely separate things bearing different legal and societal consequences. Understanding the difference is critical.  Let me try to clear up any confusion.

In general terms, a hate crime under Connecticut law is conduct in which the suspect intentionally causes physical injury to a victim, or threatens to harm them, in whole or in substantial part because of the actual or perceived race, religion, ethnicity, disability, sex, sexual orientation or gender identity or expression of the victim.  (Federal law is somewhat different.)

Take an argument over a parking space. Both cars get to the coveted space at the same time. One car is driven by a white man, the other by a Black man, each in a time crunch. Tempers flare as they argue over who got there first. During the confrontation, the white man punches the Black man in the face and calls him a racial slur. Or the Black man punches the white man in the face and calls him a racial epithet. Now these clearly would be a criminal assault, but do they qualify as hate crimes?

On the surface, it certainly seems so, and the victim would expect it to be so charged. However, a prosecutor has to evaluate the facts carefully, and maybe ask police to dig deeper into the case, before determining the motive of the wrongdoer.  The language used was reprehensible and offensive, but a prosecutor evaluating the case must examine the following question: Were the men motivated by racial animus, or were they instead propelled by frustration, with their use of the racial slur being the vituperative outburst of a frustrated man? (By the way, FBI statistics prove that Black Americans are and have been, overwhelmingly, the most frequent victims of hate crimes.)

As I have said repeatedly hate crimes go to motive, motive not only directed at the victim but also at the community.

However, hate crimes can not only terrorize an individual but traumatize the community of which the individual is part. It rips the social fabric. More must be done to recognize it and prosecute it when appropriate. Protecting individual victims and victim communities from hate crimes, while protecting free speech, are both core values that should be treasured and assiduously protected.

So when we hear the Republican law makers go after the college presidents, making them the scapegoats for the Republican anti-LGBTQ+ laws and rhetoric the politicians are ignoring the Constitution to stir up their own animosity against the liberals for allowing the protests.

Balancing the two is not easy, but it is a balancing act that must be undertaken in our free, democratic, multiracial society.

And yes...

How a Drag Queen Event That Never Happened Forced a Library to Shut Down
In April, Drag Queen Story Hour was announced. Protests erupted, and by September, the library was forced to close. It still hasn’t reopened.

Lake Luzerne, in upstate New York, is a small mountain town of weathered clapboard houses, with a spired church on Main Street and a public library that offered internet access, a food pantry and twice-weekly story hours for children.

Last April, the library announced a one-time addition to its children’s lineup: Drag Queen Story Hour.

“We knew it would probably be controversial,” recalled Amanda Hoffman, who was the library’s director of youth services. “We didn’t expect it to be what it became.”

Over the coming months, someone called in a bomb threat to the library, a board meeting ended in punches being thrown and the library itself became so tense that Ms. Hoffman was hospitalized with stress-induced vertigo. Neighbors denounced one another as “fascists” or “predators” and complained of being doxxed, threatened and harassed.

The library never held a Drag Queen Story Hour.

Finally, this fall, most of the library’s staff and trustees quit, forcing it to shut down. After 53 years of operation, the library — named for the adjacent Rockwell Falls — has not lent a book since Sept. 26.

Split right down the middle! The drag story hour has split the town and even brought it to fist fights.

Neighbors who grew up together have been left wondering how their quiet rural town of 1,400, about an hour’s drive north of Albany, became a battleground for a nationally polarizing debate over issues of inclusion, free speech and the role of tax-funded institutions.

Of course the Bible thumpers had to get their two cents in…

Three days later, dozens of angry residents packed what is usually a sleepy meeting of the library board of trustees. As the board conducted unrelated business, Mr. Jacquard, who leads Victory Bible Baptist Church in nearby Porter Corners, demanded that he and other residents be heard. The church describes homosexuality on its website as “sinful and abominable in the sight of God.”

Other attendees accused the library of promoting “grooming,” sexual fetishism and even Marxism.

These right-wingers still believe that we chose to be LGBTQ+ and not that it is something we are born with.

I have a relative who lives up there and I have done a lot backpacking there including once trying to hike up Mt. Marcy in November but I didn’t have proper clothes.

Flight attendant makes history as first trans woman to be crowned Miss Portugal

Marina Machete, a 28-year-old flight attendant, has just made history as the first trans woman to be crowned Miss Portugal in the beauty pageant’s history.

Machete’s groundbreaking win came on Thursday (5 October) in Borba, in the southeastern Evora region of Portugal. 

She will now compete against another trans woman – Rikkie Valerie Kollé, who won Miss Netherlands in July – in El Salvador for the title of Miss Universe, marking a huge step forward for trans women at the global beauty pageant. 

Before the competition, Machete wrote on Instagram that she was “proud to be the first trans woman to compete for the title of Miss Universe Portugal”. 

“For many years I wasn’t eligible to compete, and now it’s such an honor to be a part of this incredible group of candidates,” she added. 

In another post shared after her historic win, the trans beauty queen shared her excitement to now be heading to the Miss Universe competition in November. 

“We’re counting down to Miss Universe 2023,” Marina Machete wrote. “El Salvador, see you soon!

My Guess…

That it will be like the Civil War, it depends upon what part of the country you live in. The south will call it just a little protest while in the north it will be an insurrection.

Scholars concerned over how history will portray Jan. 6

Three years after the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, a prevalent divide remains over what people believe happened and who bears responsibility. This split has scholars concerned about how this chapter of history will be written and how the tears in civil discourse can be mended to strengthen American democracy.

"We are still almost 250 years into an experiment in democracy. There is no guarantee this would work," Lindsay Hoffman, associate professor of communications and political science at the University of Delaware, told UPI. "For a democracy to work, we have to learn how to listen to each other better and not to listen to create a better argument."

The events leading up to the riot are still being disputed in court. A Colorado judge ruled last month that Trump incited the riot with his rhetoric in the weeks following the 2020 election.

"It felt to many that were engaged politically that it was the culmination of that powder keg," Hoffman said. "It was an outlet for pent up anger and frustration."

More than 1,200 people have been charged with crimes related to the attack and they have come from nearly all 50 states, according to the U.S. Justice Department. More than 400 have been charged with assaulting, resisting or impeding officers or Capitol employees.

About 120 have been charged with using deadly or dangerous weapons or causing bodily injury to an officer.

Five deaths were directly connected to the attack, including that of Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick.

Lick the Civil War where the south claims it was all about state rights and the north says it was slavery, so to the Jan 6 uprising there will be those who don’t even teach it in schools and those who will show what really happened on Jan 6.

Meghan Riley Lewis' typical signoff for emails, texts and other messages to friends reflected her own outlook on life: "Stay sparkly."

The Bel Air, Maryland, woman made it her mission to help people see their own sparkle, even when the outside world didn't. A transgender woman, Lewis donated time, money, food and love to Baltimore Safe Haven, the state's only full-service housing and wellness center for LGBTQ+ people.

"Meghan was sparkly," said Iya Dammons, Baltimore Safe Haven's founder and executive director and Lewis' friend. "She made sure our kids were able to have a Christmas dinner, Thanksgiving dinner, whatever they needed to smile. She was always sending over sparkly things."

Lewis even invited strangers into her home on Christmas Day, hoping to ease the pain of loneliness and loss felt by many during the holidays − including trans people who often feel alienated from friends, family and society.

But her sparkle was extinguished before the holidays were over. Lewis was fatally shot Dec. 27 after a confrontation, allegedly by a man delivering food in her neighborhood. Brian Michael Delen, 47, is facing murder, assault and weapons charges. He was released to home detention on GPS monitoring Dec. 29, according to court records and local news reports.

She was an angel who helped those less fortunate.

"This is true community love and kindness toward strangers," she said. "It's hard to spend Christmas alone and I think a lot of queer and trans people experience that as well. I was very touched by that, and how she offered to make Brazilian dishes. It provided me with the strength to be alone on Christmas Day."

Hypocrite!

On Wednesday I wrote about Nikki Haley and her “slavery” answer.

But something she said still stuck in my craw, when she said,

“I think it always comes down to the role of government and what the rights of the people are. And we will always stand by the fact that I think the government was intended to secure the rights and freedoms of the people,” Haley said. “It was never meant to be all things to all people. Government doesn't need to tell you how to live your life. They don't need to tell you what you can and can't do. They don't need to be a part of your life. They need to make sure that you have freedom.”

That raises my hackles on the back of my neck.

That answer came from a presidential candidate. I already talked about the fact that she didn’t mention slavery, what got me was “Government doesn't need to tell you how to live your life.” The nerve! The hypocrisy! This from a party that:

• This is from a party that tells women what they can do or not do to their bodies,
• This is from a party that steps between a doctor and their patients,
• This from a party that tells us what we can say,
• This from a party that tells us what we can read,
• This from a party that tells us who we can love!

Give Me That Old Time Religion!

As we see the courts enshrining the evangelicals Christians I think back to the Monkey Trails where Tennessee embraced “Divine Creation .”

I came across this on Facebook… an article by Susan Campbell in the CT Post what caught my eye was…

Case in point: As we dive into 2024, a year with equal parts possibilities and danger, we are still arguing over the role religion should play in the culture. A certain brand of Christians still agonizes over imagined threats to their faith (which tells us that their faith is vulnerable and small). And we still have legislators who play to the basest members of their base — Christians who quote Two Corinthians (see the former president’s attempt at quoting scriptures) and wouldn’t know a parable if it chewed on their leg.

And so it has ever been. Nearly 100 years ago, the forefathers and -mothers of today’s hard-shell Christians were also worried about the sinful culture that surrounded them. Modernity was lapping at their shores — and in some cases, Christians believed it had completely washed over what they called a Christian nation. There was right. And there was wrong. Moving pictures, evolution, and flappers were all wrong. Old-time religion? Inherently right and righteous.

Where did we see that before? In the Scopes Trial, the History Channel says,

The law, which had been passed in March, made it a misdemeanor punishable by fine to “teach any theory that denies the story of the Divine Creation of man as taught in the Bible, and to teach instead that man has descended from a lower order of animals.” With local businessman George Rappleyea, Scopes had conspired to get charged with this violation, and after his arrest the pair enlisted the aid of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) to organize a defense. Hearing of this coordinated attack on Christian fundamentalism, William Jennings Bryan, the three-time Democratic presidential candidate and a fundamentalist hero, volunteered to assist the prosecution. Soon after, the great attorney Clarence Darrow agreed to join the ACLU in the defense, and the stage was set for one of the most famous trials in U.S. history.

Now a days instead of Divine Creation we have anti-trans and anti-LGBTQ+ laws and the courts ruling that that there is a god giving right to discriminate against us.

Ms. Cambell’s article ends with,

It is small comfort that nuance was lost in public discussion as much in the 1920s as it is today. Some things do not change and some things change only after decades force the point. Modern-day Butler Acts — laws that would limit reproductive freedom, medical care for members of the trans community, and voting rights — are created to satisfy a minority who worship a small and angry god.

Again we are torn apart by religion as more and more people turn away from religion those sects that are evangelical, they are becoming paranoid that the world world is after them. But in reality it is leaving them behind. Their nineteenth century world view is all about supremacy, oppression, fire and brimstone, they fear being a minority. They fear being minority in a heathen world full of sinners. They fear living in a country where Blacks, foreigners overrun them. They fear living in an immoral world with gays and trans people. They fear...

Why?

Why are the Republicans supporting Putin? Why are they supporting a fascist? Are they in cahoots with the authoritarian Putin?

They refuse funding Ukraine to defend itself not from Russia but rather Putin, this is Putin’s war, who has a long list of war crimes that he has to answer for, but the Republicans have no qualms cutting off aid to Ukraine.

The way the Republicans act you would think that they want Ukraine to lose and be occupied by the Russians. I bet that if the Ukrainians lost that Putin will divide the country up among his billionaire cronies.

The Republicans are blackmailing the president to get what they want and the people of Ukraine are the pawns.

Sorry about the delayed responses last week... I think that I got a touch of "SAD" the sun hasn't been out in over two weeks on the East coast and it is getting me down. I just can't get motivated to do anything, I find it is a lot hard to over coming “leaving my comfort zone" and "leaving my safe space.”

A transgender woman running for an Ohio House seat has been disqualified for failing to disclose her former name on petitions circulated to voters, in violation of a seldom-enforced state law.

Local election officials informed Vanessa Joy, who hoped to run as a Democrat for Ohio House District 50, that she was not eligible to do so, despite having collected the signatures necessary to run.

Officials said Joy violated a little-known Ohio law requiring candidates for public office to list any name changes over the previous five years on their signature petitions. The law, passed in 1995, has several exceptions, including for candidates who change their names after they are married.

Joy, who has legally changed her name and her birth certificate, told News 5 Cleveland and the Ohio Capital Journal on Wednesday she had not been aware of the law before being removed from the ballot. Ohio’s 2024 candidate requirement guide makes no mention of it.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reported,

Joy said she didn't know she had to include her former name. State law requires anyone who's changed names during the past five years — for almost any reason — to include his or her former name on petitions.

With Joy out of the 50th House race, Republican Matthew Kishman stands to win in the fall, unless a write-in candidate enters the fray. The 50th District incumbent, Reggie Stoltzfus, R-Paris Township, opted to run for Congress.

It went on to report that,

"Something that is that important should have been on the instructions," she said. "It should have been on the petition."

Not only is there nowhere to put it on the petition, but it isn’t included in the secretary of state’s 2024 candidate guide. It hasn't been on any candidate guides in recent years.

News 5 reached out to the office with numerous clarifying questions, like why the name change isn't included in the 33-page guide, but did not hear back.

I agree it should be stated on the petition form but there is nothing about it, you can read the form here.

An anti-marriage equality Republican in Tennessee has filed a bill that aims to ban all "political" flags in public schools, citing the LGBTQ+ pride flag as his inspiration.

State Rep. Gino Bulso's bill would ban all flags in schools that aren’t the United States or Tennessee flag. While there will likely be exceptions added for flags of other countries and states, Bulso said that the law will restrict those promoting an "agenda," such as the Black Lives Matter and rainbow flag.

“The whole idea is that a school is a place where a child goes to learn, not a place where a child goes to be indoctrinated," he told local outlet WKRN Nashville. "So, you’re focusing on just one purpose of the bill having to do with political statements regarding transgender ideology and other similar issues.”

I wonder if they will ban the Christian flag? Oh boy if they did what an out-roar that would create!

When asked who will determine what constitutes a "political" flag, and who will hand down bans, Bulso did not answer. He justified the legislation by claiming that "a lot of parents" don't agree with marriage equality or LGBTQ+ rights, and that the United States has lost its consensus on "sexual morality."

“Certainly, you know, 50 years ago we had a consensus on what marriage is; we don’t have that anymore. One-hundred years ago, we had a consensus on sexual morality; I don’t think we have that anymore," he said. "So, the values that I think most parents want their children exposed to are the ones that were in existence at the time that our country was founded."

It is amazing the animosity that the Republicans have against us. Is it all political or does it go deeper?

"While speech in public schools may be subject to more restrictions than other arenas, the Supreme Court has repeatedly held that First Amendment protections extend to ‘teachers and students,'” ACLU attorney Li Nowlin-Sohl wrote, adding. "Policies banning the Rainbow Flag or any political material in schools are not viewpoint neutral, as the removal is premised on the message the Rainbow Flag conveys."

They are really scared of us in their warped thinking, they still think that it is a choice.

Chappelle’s latest comedy special, The Dreamer, dropped on Netflix on Sunday (31 December), with the comedian supposedly focusing on the early years of his career in Hollywood and how he found success.

However, after just a few minutes, he was making jokes at the expense of the trans community. Similar content in earlier routines have led to him being heavily criticised.

In the new special, he claimed to “love punching down” and also mocked disabled and gay people.

It so sad that the only way he can make it as a comic is to put down the disabled and us he is playing to a White supremacist audience that is just eating up.

In 1976, a woman from Roanoke, Virginia, named Rhoda received a prescription for two drugs: estrogen and progestin. Twelve months later, a local reporter noted Rhoda’s surprisingly soft skin and visible breasts. He wrote that the drugs had made her “so completely female.”

Indeed, that was the point. The University of Virginia Medical Center in nearby Charlottesville had a clinic specifically for women like Rhoda. In fact, doctors there had been prescribing hormones and performing surgeries – what today we would call gender-affirming care – for years.

The founder of that clinic, Dr. Milton Edgerton, had cut his teeth caring for transgender people at Johns Hopkins University in the 1960s. There, he was part of a team that established the nation’s first university-based Gender Identity Clinic in 1966.

When politicians today refer to gender-affirming care as new, “untested” or “experimental,” they ignore the long history of transgender medicine in the United States.

The Republicans have no qualms about twisting the truth to create negativity against us. They use us as the their straw man to win votes.

They say that our healthcare is experimental but the truth is…

It’s been nearly 60 years since the first transgender medical clinic opened in the U.S., and 47 years since Rhoda started her hormone therapy. Understanding the history of these treatments in the U.S. can be a helpful guide for citizens and legislators in a year when a record number of bills in statehouses target the rights of transgender people.

I also learned that gender-affirming hormone therapies have been prescribed to cisgender youths for generations – despite what contemporary politicians may think. Disability scholar Eli Clare has written of the history and continued practice of prescribing hormones to boys who are too short and girls who are too tall for what is considered a “normal” range for their gender. Because of binary gender norms that celebrate height in men and smallness in women, doctors, parents and ethicists have approved the use of hormonal therapies to make children conform to these gender stereotypes since at least the 1940s.

The Republicans keep harping on puberty blockers saying they are also experimental and does lasting harm to children.

The history of these treatments demonstrates that hormone therapies and puberty blockers have been used on cisgender children in this country – for better or for worse – with the goal of regulating the passage from girlhood to womanhood and from boyhood to manhood. Gender stereotypes concerning the presence or absence of secondary sex characteristics – too tall, too short, too much body hair – have all led parents and doctors to perform gender-affirming care on cisgender children.

But the Republicans conveniently forget to mention when the try to discredit the doctors who treat us!

But we are not the only ones who Gender Confirming Surgery it is also done on day old babies but it seem like the Republicans have no problems with the surgeries.

For over half a century, legal and medical authorities in the U.S. have also approved and administered surgeries and hormone therapies to force the bodies of intersex children to conform to binary gender stereotypes. I myself had genital surgery in infancy to bring my anatomy into alignment with expectations for what a “male” body should look like. In most cases, intersex surgeries are unnecessary for the health or well-being of a child.

The NBC News had this to say about the surgery done on intersex babies.

“Gender normalizing” surgeries have been performed on intersex babies and children since at least the 1950s, often in secrecy, without ever telling the children. In the following decades, some people who underwent these surgeries as children began to speak out against them as human rights violations. Some said they had been assigned the wrong gender, while others had endured severe complications, including sexual dysfunction and infertility.

As their stories piled up, advocacy groups began calling for better education and support for parents of intersex children, as well as for limits on these types of operations. The advocates do not oppose surgery for intersex people in general, but they believe that if the goal is more cosmetic than medical, it’s a choice children should be allowed to make for themselves when they’re older.

But in the vast majority of cases, the operations are done to prevent a child from suffering presumed psychological distress later in life, experts said. Surgeons prefer to do these operations when children are between 6 and 18 months old — when healing is believed to be optimal and when children are too young to remember, experts said.

And there has been never a trans person who hasn’t reached the age on consent that had surgery dispirit what the Republican.

Everything the Republicans say are lies and innuendos about us.

They Don’t Trust The Voters.

• They gerrymandered the voting districts to make sure they win.
• They mandate voter ID that low income and minorities have a hard time getting.

• They have shortened early voting.
• They have made it harder to vote in person, Georgia made it a crime to give water and food to voters waiting in line for hours.
• They have made it harder for people with felony convictions to vote.
• They have cut the number of voting districts to make it harder for low income voters to get to the polling places.

Now they are making it harder to pass ballot questions. They have increases the number of signatures to get a question on the ballot.  They are trying to increase the percentage a yes votes to pass a ballot question.

The group working to ensure abortion access in Florida has nearly reached the number of signatures it needs under state law to put a proposed constitutional amendment on the 2024 ballot. As of last week, Floridians Protecting Freedom had almost 864,000 of the required 891,523 validated signatures. This is important news. The voters of Florida must have the chance to speak on this issue, rather than allowing the Florida Legislature, which passed an extreme, six-week abortion ban in May, to force its decision on the rest of us.

They are going over every minute detail of the question trying to prevents from getting on the ballot and checking the signatures with their voting card.

The ballot measure is not a done deal yet. The state is trying to block voters from having their say. Attorney General Ashley Moody has filed a court challenge regarding the wording of the summary that would appear on the ballot. Getting the signatures is a crucial step. The abortion-rights group has until Feb. 1 to submit all the signatures and meet other requirements, including that the signatures come from at last half of Florida’s congressional districts. The group has said it’s on track to submit 1.4 million signatures for validation by the state. That should be more than enough — almost half a million more than required — even allowing for some signatures to be tossed out as invalid.

And they are going to court to try to block the voters.

Moody’s brief, filed with the state Supreme Court, argues, essentially, that Floridians will be confused by the wording of the ballot summary. The amendment would prohibit any state law that delays or bans abortion before viability or when necessary to protect the health of the patient. It would protect abortion access in Florida until viability, estimated at around 24 weeks.

The Republicans know that every ballot questions in every state so far defeated the Republicans attempt to make abortion illegal.

Those pesky voter just can’t get it right.

Miami Police Have Arrested Two Men For Allegedly Beating a Group of LGBTQ+ Women

Miami police have filed hate crime charges against two men who allegedly assaulted a group of LGBTQ+ women, along with a bystander who intervened, in November 2023.

Jorge Giovani Estevez, 33, and Daiken Fernandez, 25, were both arrested on December 27 after one of the victims in the attack named them as potential suspects. According to an arrest report obtained by NBC News, Fernandez faces two felony counts of battery with prejudice, while Estevez was charged with one count of misdemeanor battery with prejudice. Estevez was released on a $5,000 bond and Fernandez on a $7,500 bond, and both men are scheduled to be arraigned January 26, per the office of Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez.

According to the arrest report, Estevez told police he was attacked by a “[man] in a white dress” and only acted in self-defense, with Fernandez making a similar claim. But graphic video footage of the attack aired by WTVJ last month tells a different story, instead showing two men in white shirts assaulting a bystander who tried to stop the ongoing attack, then repeatedly punching an anonymous woman in the face.

Blame the victim won’t work, there are too many videos out there showing the true story.

According to the report, Estevez and Fernandez initiated the fight by first yelling at the group of women they were “just lesbian because you haven’t had good cock” and that the trans woman had “a bigger dick than us,” then knocking one woman out. The two men allegedly then attacked the bystander and a second woman, as seen in the video, knocking her out as well.

Florida has a bias crime non-discrimination law for sexual orientation but not for us.

Save The Child! Um… Ah…

Not quite, Nebraska is one the state of the states that jumped on the ban abortion bandwagon when it passed its own abortion law.

NPR reported that,

The Nebraska Legislature on Friday approved a 12-week abortion ban and restrictions on gender-affirming care for people younger than 19 in a move so contentious that lawmakers on both sides have said they may be unable to work together in the future.

Conservative lawmakers called in a visibly ill colleague so they would have enough votes to end a filibuster and pass a bill with both measures. Republican Gov. Jim Pillen, who pushed for the bill, has promised to sign it into law.

The mood in the Nebraska Capitol has been volatile since lawmakers on Tuesday advanced by a single vote the hybrid measure that ties together restrictions that Republicans have pursued across the U.S. One lawmaker, Omaha state Sen. Megan Hunt, disclosed in March that her teenage son is transgender and said Friday that she now plans to leave the state.

But once the child is born they are thrown under the bus. They are on their own.

Nebraska governor stands firm on rejection of federal money to feed food-insecure children

Nebraska’s Republican governor on Friday reiterated his rejection of $18 million in federal funding to help feed children who might otherwise go hungry while school is out.

Nebraska will not participate in the 2024 Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer for Children — or Summer EBT — program, Gov. Jim Pillen said in a written statement. That statement came as advocates for children and low-income families held a news conference outside the Governor’s Mansion in Lincoln to call on Pillen to change his mind before the Jan. 1 deadline to sign up for the program.

The program — part of federal assistance made available during the COVID-19 pandemic — would provide pre-loaded EBT cards to families whose children are eligible for free and reduced-price lunches at school. Those families would receive $40 per eligible child per month over the summer. The cards can be used to buy groceries, similar to how SNAP benefits are used.

Neighboring Iowa is also opting out of the program, with Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds announcing that decision last week and saying, “An EBT card does nothing to promote nutrition at a time when childhood obesity has become an epidemic.”

Do you know one of the reasons why child are obese? It from not eating nutritional foods, it is from eating processed foods. Eating fresh fruits, vegetables, and unprocessed meats promote healthy bodies.

Pillen insisted Friday that the state would continue to help food-insecure children through the Summer Food Service Program, which provides meals and snacks at various sites when school is not in session. Providing on-site services also allows providers to spot and report issues like malnutrition, neglect and abuse in children, he said.

But critics say not all families have access to the on-site programs — particularly in Nebraska’s vast rural stretches, where sites can be many miles away from a struggling family.

“No kid ever said, ‘I want to be born into a family that struggles,’” said Jenni Benson, president of the Nebraska State Education Association — the state’s largest teachers union. “Why would we even question that people and children deserve food?”

This shows you that the abortion bans are not about saving the children but it is more about power and control and satisfyingly their evangelical base.

That Warm And Fuzzy Feelings.

Many people don’t want change, change gives them headaches, change makes them have to think, they want the same old, same old. Then have a ton of contradictions they want the government out of their lives but at the same time they want the government to tell them what to read, what they can say, what they can do with their bodies, and who they can love.

Large numbers of Americans want a strong, rough, anti-democratic leader

It might be comforting to think that American democracy has made it past the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection. But our research shows that a wide range of the American people, of all political stripes, seek leaders who are fundamentally anti-democratic.

It’s true that many who participated in the insurrection are facing consequences, including prison time. Many candidates for state office who falsely claimed that Donald Trump won the 2020 presidential election lost their races. And the congressional committee investigating the insurrection voted to refer Trump to the Department of Justice for criminal charges.

But more than 100 members of Congress who objected to the results of a free and fair election won their reelection campaigns. And at least seven people who attended the “Stop the Steal” rally on Jan. 6 have been elected to state legislatures and two have been elected to Congress.

This is happening not only here but around the world, people want fascists, people want authoritarians, people want dictators.

Across the political spectrum, Americans seek 'tough leaders who will crack down'
Majorities of every political stripe agree or strongly agree with the idea that solving the nation's problems depends on strong leaders who will take action against those who would undermine American values. The exception is those who "lean Democratic" – but still, 49% of them support that idea too.

Support for anti-democratic leaders
About two decades ago, an important study found that roughly 1 in 4 Americans supported leaders who are uncompromising and take decisive action. These people said they would also prefer nonelected experts to make decisions. Our study replicates this finding nearly 20 years later but sheds light on a troubling reason for this preference.

As I said, this is happening around the world...

In Venezuela, for instance, democratic decline happened gradually. Early on, Venezuela’s former president Hugo Chavez was known for using nationalist language and calling opponents epithets like “rancid oligarchs” and “squealing pigs.” Later, he blacklisted those who sought his removal from office through a democratically conducted referendum. Eventually, he went further, arresting and exiling his political opponents.

These types of tactics have also been used in other nations, such as Turkey and Hungary, by leaders who rose to power through democratic elections.

Across the political spectrum
Anti-democratic statements are embraced by members of both U.S. parties, but more commonly by Republicans.

For example, around 90% of Republicans would support tough leaders who crack down on groups that “undermine American values” – however the survey respondents define those values. More than half of Democrats take the same position. Perhaps even more notably, nearly half of citizens who strongly support the Republican Party and over a third of those who strongly support the Democratic Party endorse the view that it is acceptable to “bend the rules” for people like themselves to achieve political goals.

They want to feel safe and don’t care how it is done to make them feel safe, even if they’re innocent. The Republicans keep pushing the lie about rampant crime under the Democratics even though it is a lie, crime has been dropping in the Blue states while the crime rate is much higher in Republican states.

The latest crime data is from 2021 (Firearm Injury Death Rate from the CDC)...

Many citizens prefer leaders who are willing to undermine democracy if it means protecting people like themselves from groups that threaten their values or status. Although most Americans do not subscribe to these beliefs, a substantial portion of the country does.

We are the boogeymen, we trans people, those who skin color is different from theirs, those who speak with an accent, and those who worship a different god, the conservatives fear what is different, and they fear change. They get a warm fuzzy feeling when in familiar surrounding.

A federal circuit judge wants the Supreme Court to scrap a longstanding test for determining what is cruel and unusual punishment. In an October speech to the Federalist Society, Reuters reported, Judge Thomas Hardiman, appointed by President George W. Bush to the Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit, advocated a "return to the text and original meaning of the Eighth Amendment" and an end to the "evolving standards of decency" test created by the Supreme Court in the 1950s.

In 1958, the Supreme Court ruled that stripping someone's citizenship for committing a crime violated the Eighth Amendment. Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren wrote that, to determine what constitutes cruel or unusual, the Court "must draw its meaning from the evolving standards of decency that mark the progress of a maturing society." That test has since been used by liberal Supreme Court majorities to strike down death penalty protocols, ban capital sentences for crimes that did not result in death, and outlaw death sentences for offenses committed as a minor.

Hardiman called the test a "contrived ratchet" that has fueled a "runaway train of elastic constitutionalism."

"Its inscrutable standards require judges to ignore the law as written in favor of their own moral sentiments," he said. "The only constant is that more and more laws adopted by the people's representatives have been nullified."

As I mention above, harsh justice doesn’t work, Texas has the highest execution rates in the nation and as I wrote also some of the highest crime figures and they believe in “an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth” justice. Is this what the Republicans and the judge want to bring back?

Americans were disgusted with England's despotic criminal code, which by the end of the 18th century included over 200 capital offenses. But the early republic was inconsistent in practice. Virginia still allowed whipping, branding, and ear cropping.

History has shown that the rich and afford the best lawyer while the Blacks and minorities face the harshness punishment.

This is what the Republicans want to go back to when the cite all of this “Originalist” legal stuff. They want to go back to the 1950s when Blacks knew their place, gays were persecuted, we didn’t exist, and abortions were illegal! Now they are dreaming of a fascist country.

Chief Justice Newby removes Judge Stroud as chief of Appeals Court

State Supreme Court Justice Paul Newby removed Donna Stroud as chief of the North Carolina Court of Appeals Tuesday, replacing her with Chris Dillon.

Typically the chief judge of the Court of Appeals is the one who has been on that court the longest. Stroud was first elected to Court of Appeals in 2006, six years before Dillon won a seat there.

Newby, Stroud and Dillon are all Republicans, but Stroud has been criticized by Newby’s colleague, Supreme Court Justice Phil Berger, Jr., who supported Stroud’s primary challenger in 2022.

According to an article in North Carolina Lawyers Weekly, Berger was frustrated with Stroud for not supporting one of his former law clerk’s bid to be a clerk on the Court of Appeals. Despite Republicans having a 10-5 majority on the Court of Appeals at the time, a former Democrat was awarded the clerk position after Stroud and another Republican joined Democrats and voted for him. Berger accused Stroud of whipping votes so “the dems got their clerk of court,” according to the North Carolina Lawyers Weekly article.

It is our way or the highway!

WRAL News writes that,

“Chief Justice Newby informed me on Dec. 19 that we would have a new chief judge, effective Jan. 1,” Stroud said. “He had stated, as a reason for that, that some courts — federal courts for example, and some state courts — do rotate chief judges since there’s an administrative burden on the chief judge.”

When the North Carolina Court of Appeals was created in 1967, the Supreme Court’s chief justice was given the power to name the chief judge of the Court of Appeals. The leadership role has traditionally gone to the judge with the most seniority on the bench, Stroud said. Dillon is her junior by six years.

I don’t know how he can say that with a straight face because according to NC Newline…

“The North Carolina Supreme Court Historical Society indicates all prior Chief Judges have left the position on account of retiring from the bench or passing away. Neither happened here as Judge Stroud continues to serve on the Court of Appeals,” Brook wrote. “So replacing Chief Judge Stroud with Chief Judge Dillon is an unprecedented step from Chief Justice Newby.”

That is what you are voting for when you vote Republican a vindictive party machine that chops up anything and anybody that gets in its way... an elephant never forgets.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) issued a warning to states moving to keep former President Trump off the presidential ballot, saying the House of Representatives has the final say over whether electors from those states are certified on Jan. 6, 2025.

“Maine, Colorado, and other states that might try to bureaucratically deny ballot access to any Republican nominee should remember the U.S. House of Representatives is the ultimate arbiter of whether to certify electors from those states,” Massie posted Friday on X, formerly Twitter.

That normally mundane certification procedure in January 2025, Massie suggested, could be the mechanism by which Congress tosses out electoral votes from Maine, Colorado and any other states where Trump is ultimately denied ballot access.

He elaborated in a subsequent tweet that any move to toss electoral votes in 2025 would likely depend on whether Republicans keep control of the House, where they currently have a slim majority.

I could see where the clown car members could vote for Trump in states that banned him from the ballot. I could see them declaring the ballots in the states that banned Trump void and switching the electoral votes to Trump.

They are just crazy enough to change the Electoral College votes to Trump saying that the election was rigged. 

HOWEVER: The new Congress is sworn in on January 3^rdand that could be a whole new ball game if the Democrats win back the House and keep the Senate! Therefore the new Congress votes on the sixth to elect the new president. So this is more pressure on getting a Democratic sweep in Congress and the presidency.

BOOK-BAN PROHIBITION

Libraries that indiscriminately ban books will not be eligible for state funds. They must adopt the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights stating “materials should not be excluded because of the origin, background, or views of those contributing to their creation.”

I would like a law like that here but also add that you can't ban a book because of a protected class, such as banning a book because the woman in the book is having an unmarried affair.

Presidential hopeful Nikki Haley did not cite slavery as a cause of the American Civil War on Wednesday night when a town hall attendee asked her what she thought led to the bloody conflict.

The former governor of South Carolina -- the first state to secede from the Union in 1860 -- instead said at the event in Berlin, New Hampshire, that the catalysts were “basically how the government was going to run” and “freedoms and what people could and couldn't do."

The Republican candidate then turned the question around on the person who posed it.

“I think it always comes down to the role of government and what the rights of the people are. And we will always stand by the fact that I think the government was intended to secure the rights and freedoms of the people,” Haley said. “It was never meant to be all things to all people. They need to make sure that you have freedom.”

The questioner told Haley they thought it was “astonishing” she gave an answer that did not mention slavery.

"What do you want me to say about slavery?” she responded before pivoting and asking for the next question.

You remember that Florida was banning books on slavery well there is a reason for that and it goes back to before the Civil War. The British Daily Mail writes,

In the Republican controlled states we see topics on race just glossed over slavery as the cause of the Civil War, was the north’s refusal to enforce the federal slave laws. They cite the Fugitive Slave Act where the northern states refused to return run away slaves as the cause of the Civil War. But the thing what was the root cause of the civil war… slavery. The Fugitive Slave Act was about… slavery. The north felt that the Fugitive Slave Act forced them to accept slavery, that by returning run away slave to their “owner.”

So when Nikki Haley gave that answer, that was what she was taught. Southern schools warp the history of the war but that is not the only thing they twist, just look at the protests of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s and how that gets taught. I believe that Nikki Haley not answering with slavery was wrong, the war was fought to end slavery, most northerners were against slavery but some did “own” slaves.
