This is not about who you want to be. This is what you are.

That is how the letter from the Old Town Maine school to the parents describes being transgender.
You are receiving this letter to ask you for your support as we work through a sensitive student situation. Currently, we have a trans-gendered student in our second grade classroom. The student was enrolled in our school last year and may be familiar to your children as a boy, but now will be recognized as a girl. After meeting with this child’s mother, we all thought it best to be open with families in order for the school community to be aware.
[…]
Teachers will encourage students to continue to be respectful of all students in their classes and to treat others as they would like to be treated; according to the same respect they wish for themselves. I know our students and they will be more comfortable with this situation than we give them credit. It’s we adults that always need to remember the messages we are sending to our children about acceptance and tolerance with our behaviors, actions, and comments.
The school consulted the parents and LGBT and trans organizations before they sent out the letter, now let’s see how the parents handle it.

The local NBC affiliate had this to say about the letter...

  1. I like that they contacted LGBT representatives before sending out the letter.
