She Works Hard for the Money

Crazy Sam’s Saturday 9: She Works Hard for the Money (1983)

On Saturdays I take a break from the heavy stuff and have some fun…

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) This song is about a woman who works hard as a waitress. What's the hardest job you've ever had?
A summer job working in a warehouse… hot, dirty, and lifting heavy boxes. The only good thing was I got to drive a tractor trailer from the warehouse over to the factory 3 blocks away.

2) The lyrics tell us she has worked at this job for 28 years. What's the longest you stayed with one employer?
Also 28 years and I took early retirement when they closed down the factory.
First job after college went bankrupt after 18 months, second job lasted 3 years and I followed my boss to my third job after college which lasted the 28 years.

[RANT]
Now a days kids are lucky to keep job for more than a few years.

Companies no longer reward long time employees; they only see the bottom line. They don’t see the advantages of promoting within the company they only see that it cost more from promoting within the company; they don’t see the advantages of having job knowledge from long time employees.

When we were bought out by a large multinational company they put people in charge that had no manufacturing experience, and no engineering experience… the company went $4 billion dollars in debt and now my pension might be cut by the bankruptcy court.

We saw this coming, we made custom built control systems and the engineering and manufacturing had decades of experience in building them but they were laid off and job shoppers were brought in and they made all types of mistakes.

Meanwhile, the company executives made millions in salaries while it’s employees are paying the price with the loss of their pensions.

Sorry for the rant; but this is one of my touchy points of what is wrong with companies today, now back to the regular Saturday meme.

3) Donna Summer was inspired to write this song during an awards show. She ducked into the bathroom and met the elderly ladies' room attendant, whose job it was to make sure the room the spotless, the complimentary hairspray and moisturizer was abundant, and there was a hot towel for every celebrity who used the facilities. "Wow," Donna thought, "she works hard for those tips." Who is the last person you tipped?
The clerk who made my decadent chocolate ice cream milk shake.

4) Early in her career, Donna was in the touring company of the musical Hair. It played in Munich for so long that she became fluent in German. What's the longest you have ever lived away from home?
My college days.

5) Sam's dad is naturally outgoing and enjoys striking up conversations with waitresses, librarians, the checker at the supermarket, etc. Sam is always polite but more private. Are you more like father or daughter?
I am quite and introverted, and I need quite time to recharge.

6) A little more than 10% of the American workforce is self-employed. Have you ever been your own boss?
I was the boss at work and the boss of my life.

7) Labor Day weekend may offer a golden opportunity for napping and sleeping in. Do you snore?
Since I am single it is hard to tell, there is no one around to tell me.

8) Will you be attending a Labor Day picnic or barbecue?
I will be up at the cottage with a friend who is leaving today and I will do a steak on the grill tonight.

9) Labor Day traditionally marks the beginning of the fall. Will you be adding any new fall clothes to your wardrobe?
Well since it is forecast to be in the 90s and humid no. It is still tank top and shorts weather.

Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend!

  1. I agree 100% with your rant. The agency I work for is a pretty narrow spoke in a multinational wheel. They not only are quick to lay people off (it's advertising and that's the nature of the beast), they only give employees a week for every year in severance. That is half of what's standard. Their explanation is that severance is not legally mandated. Yes, but smaller companies can afford it less but give more. It's sad.

  2. yes, I agree with your rant and what a perfect time on Labor Day! My husband is a union laborer and he has a little of the he same thing going on at his job, the new laborers that come in now go through an apprenticeship and once they are done it is like they have a building management degree and they can be in management and makes loads of money...good for them...meanwhile, he has been working in this same job since he was 18 and is now in his 40's and he can only become a foreman. It is a little messed up because the kids do not have as much experience as he does. Oh well. Rant over here too. I hope you have a really nice long weekend and I love your answers!

  3. You are so right about the heartless way workers are treated now.
Mini rant here....We were caught in some union busting moves by one of the biggest worldwide corporations back in the 80's. They must have written the book on the subject! They offered early retirement but you couldn't collect your pension if you went to work for their "Wholey owned subsidiary". Years later, when they sold it off, we could. We were lucky not to lose a pension. Now they are at it again.
Keep ranting. I don't think the third arm of any economy can work this out without organizing.

  4. I appreciate your rant. The way companies treat people is criminal.

  5. Wow, that totally sucks about your pension! I hope it doesn't come to that. I, too, agree with your rant. There are a few companies out there that are exceptions (and I am blessed to now be working for one) but for the most part, all that matters is the almighty dollar.
