A Follow Up

You know the post that I wrote about all the hate that the right has stirred up over a 12 year old trans girl and how people stepped in to help her, well it just got a lot better.

A demonstration was held for a seventh grade student who was threatened in Oklahoma because she’s transgender.

Comments made by parents in Achille, Oklahoma, on social media about 12-year-old Maddie drew national attention last week as they called for violence against the trans kid.

About 20 people showed up in the rural Oklahoma town to show support for Maddie. The demonstrators wore red to show their solidarity and duct taped their mouths to show how they want speak with their actions, not their words.

“Everybody is different. You don’t have to understand it or like it – just get along,” said Darius Douglas, who was at the demonstration.

Police had set up an area for counterprotestors – presumably people who would demonstrate in favor of violence against a seventh-grader – but none showed up.
But even with all the support she has it wasn’t enough to overcome the bigotry and hate.
‘I Don’t Feel Safe Living Here.’ After Threats From Parents, a Transgender Girl's Family Is Moving. Again.

For the second time in less than two years, Brandy Rose is planning to move her family to a new town, saying she no longer feels safe in Achille, Oklahoma because of violent threats against her transgender daughter, Maddie.

The Achille school district shut down for two days this week after adults in a parent Facebook group threatened the 12-year-old for using the girls’ bathroom at school. The incident renewed concerns that had driven the family from Sherman, Texas, where Maddie experienced “horrendous” school bullying after she transitioned. Some students had forced Maddie into the boys’ bathroom and taunted her to commit suicide, Rose said.

The move to Achille in 2017 was supposed to give Maddie a “fresh start.” Now the family is moving again — this time to Houston, seeking a “a more open, diverse community for people like my daughter” — as Rose fears for Maddie’s safety in the small town where she became the center of a firestorm this week.
One of the questions that I keep coming up with is how did the haters find out? Did someone on the school staff leak it? If they did they violated several federals school privacy laws.

I have noticed a turn in the last few weeks, as Trump turns up the hate more people are speaking out against hate. There is still a lot of hate out there but there is still a lot more love out there also.

I have to wonder if Christine Hallquist getting the Democratic nomination for governor of Vermont and all the other primary wins around the country isn’t a showing of peoples love and desire to show that they will vote for the best candidate and they don’t care what gender, race, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity because they only want the best candidate elected.
