The federal government is right in its new guidelines designed to protect civil rights of transgender Americans, according to a legal brief filed Wednesday by Washington, 11 other states and the District of Columbia.
The states are responding to a legal challenge, brought by Texas, which has asked a U.S. District Court to block guidelines prohibiting school districts and employers from discriminating against transgender persons who want to use bathrooms and other facilities consistent with their gender identity.
There are approximately 1.5 million transgender Americans.
"Texas's lawsuit is just another unacceptable example of the discrimination transgender individuals experience," said Attorney General Bob Ferguson. "While Texas and other states hide behind unfounded safety concerns, this case is really an attempt to deny the civil rights of our transgender friends, coworkers and family members."

"Contrary to Plaintiffs' claims, our shared experience demonstrates that protecting the civil rights of our transgender friends, relatives, classmates and colleagues creates no public safety threat and imposes no meaningful financial burden," argues the states'/D.C. brief.
Washington is joined in its brief by California, Oregon, New York, Vermont, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Mexico and the District of Columbia.I am glad to see that Connecticut is one of the states that are standing up for our rights.
