Locker Room #2

Yesterday I wrote about a school’s locker room policy, today it is at the “Y”

GLENS FALLS  A woman from Queensbury has canceled her membership at the local YMCA because a transgender woman is being allowed to use the women’s locker room.

In a letter to The Post-Star, Diane LaFontaine said she had canceled her membership and she hopes others will do the same.
LaFontaine said Wednesday the Y should have consulted with its membership before allowing transgender members to use the locker room of their choice.
Can you imagine if down in Alabama back in the 50’s if they said we are going to vote if we are going to allow blacks to use the locker room; how do you think that vote would have gone?

The “Y” response was,
The Family YMCA of the Glens Falls Area allows transgender members to choose which locker room they want to use for changing clothes and showering, said Brian Bearor, the YMCA’s chief executive officer.

The Y, he said, is “a place where many communities come together.”
The YMCA’s policy reflects its values, Bearor said.

“It is consistent with our core values, and we are trying to build empathy for each other, which is important,” he said. “Diversity is important to us, and we want to make sure everyone feels welcome at the Y.”
Inclusion is a family value. Segregation is not.

This morning I am at a private school talking a class on LGBT activism. A group of students wanted to learn what they could do to help with the LGBT community.
