Senior Polish judge deletes tweet about transgender child

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A Polish top court judge on Thursday deleted a tweet in which she had publicized personal information about a transgender child, triggering accusations that she had placed the youth in danger.

This is the latest development highlighting a divide over LGBT and gender issues that pits conservatives in the mostly Roman Catholic nation against those seeking greater acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

So far, discussions have focused mostly on adult gays and lesbians, but the judge's tweet this week brought calls for empathy for transgender youth.

Krystyna Pawlowicz, a justice on the Constitutional Tribunal, wrote critically on Twitter on Tuesday about the case of a school in the town of Podkowa Lesna, near Warsaw, which is respecting the child's wish to use a girl's name.

In that original tweet, Pawlowicz argued that the school was disregarding the official sex designation on the child’s records. Pawlowicz referred to the child as a boy, gave the child's chosen first name and the full name of the principal, as well as the name and address of the school.

Pawlowicz is a former lawmaker for the country’s ruling party, Law and Justice, who is known for her strongly conservative views. She was appointed to the Constitutional Tribunal in 2019.

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — The European Union’s top court ruled Tuesday that Poland’s new regulations for appointing judges to the Supreme Court could violate EU law, an opinion that was immediately contested by the justice minister and other judicial officials in Warsaw.

The ruling obliges Poland’s right-wing government to have these regulations discontinued and to observe the principles of judicial independence and the right to judicial protection.

The EU has been strongly criticizing Poland’s conservative government for the changes it has introduced to the judiciary since it won power in 2015, saying they undermine the country’s rule of law.

In a decision that could have a powerful effect on future court verdicts regarding judicial appointments, the ruling also allows Poland’s courts to refrain from applying the government regulations introduced in 2018 and 2019, if they deem them to be in conflict with EU law.

Also Judge Julia Przylebska, the head of Poland’s top court vetting legislation, said the ruling constituted an “evident infringement on Poland’s constitutional order” and undermined the “foundations of the European Union as a community of sovereign states.”

Przylebska was among the very first judicial appointments made by the right-wing government.

Sounds like what the McConnell and the Republicans did here.

The conservatives are spreading their hate around the world. As the wage gap widens around the world unrest increases and the people look for a scapegoat and we are it.

Puberty blockers can be prescribed to both cisgender and transgender children, and be used in treatments for adults as well.

Arkansas has become the first state to ban gender-affirming care for minors, including the use of puberty blockers and hormone therapy, after the state legislature overrode Gov. Asa Hutchinson's veto of the bill.

The bill, which passed the state's House and Senate with a wide majority, bans doctors from providing any form of gender-affirming health care to people under the age of 18. Similar measures are being considered in Alabama, North Carolina and Tennessee, and more than 20 states are considering other restrictions on transgender children, even as transgender representation increases in legislatures.

Doctors have criticized the measure, especially its restriction on puberty blockers, which are used for multiple conditions beyond treating transgender children and are reversible.

When are puberty blockers used?

Puberty-blocking medications are primarily used in young children who start puberty too early, according to Salas-Humara and Safer. The condition, known as precocious puberty, is diagnosed when girls before the age of 8 and boys before the age of 9 start to undergo puberty.

"The big historical using prior to using them for transgender care was precocious puberty," said Safer. "The idea is to have (kids) stay in their prepubescent state until they're a little bit older, a little bit more mature, and more around the age where others around them also might be going into puberty. That will work out better for them from a personal and social perspective."

Puberty blockers may also be used to treat prostate cancer in older men, according to Safer, and to manipulate hormones for women who are struggling with infertility. Most recently, puberty blockers have garnered some attention for their use in transgender children. Safer described this use as a "variation on the theme of precocious puberty."

"Kids will come and say they're transgender or they think they're transgender ... but they're entering puberty, and so it would be good to not have them go into the quote-unquote 'wrong' puberty, where they would have permanent characteristics that might have to be dealt with from a surgical perspective later," said Safer. "They're at a relatively young age, where it might be relatively early in the conversations ... to be making decisions with regard to more permanent things, but the physical changes are happening already, so it's an opportunity to pause that."

The Republicans lie through their teeth… they lie to create an impression that treating trans children does irreversible harm. They just don’t care the harm they do to children.
