I just came across the NYC transgender student policy that was released on February 21. This is a good step forward, New York City is one of the largest school systems in the nation…
The policy has been picked by the mainstream media and the transphobia comments have begun.
Many questions arise for students and school staff when considering the best supports for transgender students. These guidelines are designed to provide direction for schools to address issues that may arise concerning the needs of transgender students. Because this is an evolving area for school districts, some of this guidance will undoubtedly change over time.I have a problem with their definition of “transgender,”
These guidelines are intended to help schools ensure a safe learning environment free of discrimination and harassment, and to promote the educational and social integration of transgender students. They do not anticipate every situation that may occur and the needs of each student must be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Every student and school is unique and building administrators should discuss these issues with students and their families and draw on the experiences and expertise of their colleagues as well as external resources where appropriate.
2. “Transgender” is a term which describes people whose gender identity or gender expression is different from their assigned sex at birth.I use “transgender” as an umbrella term, I see this definition being used more and it seems to originate from GLAAD. I see it used in non-trans media and on trans-blogs I see it used as an umbrella term, how do you define “transgender?”
The policy has been picked by the mainstream media and the transphobia comments have begun.
