I Remember

[Editorial]

Back when I transitioned in 2007, it was different them. Things were looking up, we were passing laws that protected minorities, laws were past in the Civil Rights era were being used to protect us.

Life was good!

There were never any issues with bathrooms.

There were never any problems with sports.

There were never any problems with being trans... it was accepted that nature was diverse. Diversity was celebrated.

But then hate started to rise, hate for those who were different, hate for those who looked different. Hate for those who spoke different. Hate for those with different colored skin. Hate for those who worshiped different religions. Hate for those who loved different. Hate for those whose gender was different.

Hate built a political party.

Hate has divided our country.

When I was in my twenties... my generation protested the war in Vietnam. We protested for Civil Rights! We protested for the environment! The LGBTQ+ movement was started then! We had protests for the anti-Nuclear and peace movements!

What is this generation of 30 and under protesting or supporting now?

They are supporting discrimination! Over 50% of men under 30 voted for Trump in 2024! Many Trump supporters believe race is overemphasized in media, education, and politics. They are against DEI.

The generations have flipped... my generation supported diversity and inclusion, this generation is against it.

Now:
  • Trans rights, once progressing quietly but steadily in the early 2000s, have become flashpoints for cultural conflict.
  • LGBTQ+ protections, once expanding under broad bipartisan support (e.g., repeal of DOMA, marriage equality), are now under renewed attack.
  • Race-conscious policies—affirmative action, DEI in education and business—are being dismantled or discredited.
  • The Civil Rights—so key to progress in decades past—is now being reinterpreted in ways that limit its reach.
Can we rally that generation away from bigotry and back to the light?
