"Silence in the face of harm always sides with the oppressor,”ThemBy Mathew RodriguezOctober 23, 2025On Tuesday morning, a Dallas Methodist church began painting the steps outside its doors in the colors of the LGBTQ+ pride flag in response to Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s directive that all rainbow crosswalks in the state be removed, according to the Dallas Voice. The church’s visual protest comes just as rainbow crosswalks in Houston were removed by the state.Oak Lawn United Methodist Church, an inclusive church that has long welcomed members of the LGBTQ+ community, is near one of the crosswalks set for removal. Oak Lawn is well-known for being Dallas’s LGBTQ+ neighborhood.Rev. Rachel Griffin-Allison, Oak Lawn UMC’s senior pastor, said in a statement that the painted steps will serve as an important rebuff to the removal of the rainbow crosswalks.“It’s important because silence is not neutral — silence in the face of harm always sides with the oppressor,” Griffin-Allison said in a statement to a local ABC affiliate. “When forces of power try to erase symbols of queer joy and inclusion, the Church has a choice — to retreat into comfort or to step forward in courage. We’re choosing courage.” Griffin-Allison also emphasized that this was “not a political act” but rather, a “pastoral one.”“The rainbow is a reminder that God keeps showing up — especially for those the world tries to silence,” she added.
So please don't paint religion with a wide brush... there are those who have our back!
